1. Thesis statement- In the Devil's Highway Luis Alberto Urrea uses pathos to put readers in
the mind of those crossing the border. Due to emotions being universal readers are able to
connect to the crossers’ excruciating journey without experiencing it first hand.
2. Topic sentence- The author uses the tool of pathos throughout the whole story showing
the struggles that the crossers go through in the desert.
3. Context- In this section of Devil’s Highway, the Yuma 14 are still walking through the
desert and are starting to undergo the effects of heat exhaustion.
4. Quote- “Men stumbled away towards illusion in the brutal light. Men thought they were
home, walking into their front doors, hugging their wives, making love. Still, they
walked. Men were swimming. Men were killing Mendez. Men were on the beach,
collecting shells and watching their children splash.” (Chapter 12, p. 159).
5. Analysis-
a. Step1. The tool expressed in this quote is pathos.
b. Step 2. Pathos is used in the quote because the author says “Men thought they
were home.’’ This tells readers the illusions the men experience to show how the
harsh heat can alter people's ability to think. The men thinking they are home
appeals to your emotions because in reality they are dying.
c. Step 3. This relates to your feelings because you feel sorry for them that they are
not going to see their families again and that will be their last thought before
death. (add idea of people wanting to say their last words to loved ones before
death for reassurance and peace but crossers are not able to)
d. Step 4.
6. Transition into next quote- Another instance you see Luis using pathos is when
7. Context- The crossers are still walking through the desert but in this section Mendez has
abandoned them and the men start to walk on their own in hope of surviving. Many of
them get lost, and are left behind to die.
8. Quote 2- “I will never forget the sadness in my nephew’s eyes when he looked at me,
shedding tears, and I was unable to do anything except to tell him not to die” (Chapter 11,
p. 143)
9. Analysis-
a. Step 1. In this quote you can see the tool of pathos being used.
b. Step 2. You see pathos in this quote when the crosser sees his nephew scared and
sad but he is “unable to do anything except to tell him not to die” This appeals to
your emotions because it is a different level of hurt and frustration when you want
to do something so bad but can not, making you feel useless.
c. Step 3. The author tells about a dying family member to relate to the readers
emotions towards family death. (add idea that many of the crossers actually got
family members involved in crossing, putting death on their hands)
d. Step 4.
10. Transition to next quote- Towards the end of the book you see Luis still including pathos.
11. Context-The author is setting the scene of what they desert is like for the immigrants
crossing through it.
12. Quote 3- “Pregnant women with dying fetuses within them are not uncommon; young
mothers have been found with infants attached to their breasts, still trying to nurse.” (Pg
20)
13. Analysis-
a. Step 1. The tool displayed is pathos.
b. Step 2. The author sets the scene of the desert by telling folktales along with
personal stories about those crossing it.
c. Step 3. The author wants the reader to realize what immigrants go through when
crossing the border. He does this through the strong emotion of sympathy towards
women and children.
d. Step 4.
14. Concluding sentence- Throughout the book Luis utilizes pathos to give readers an inside
look at the tragedies and loss of hope from those trying to cross the border. He shows
how what seemed like a harmless journey to a better life turns into disparity for not only
the crossers but their families as well.
