Examination, June 2020
Choice Based Grading System (CBGS)
Analysis of Structures - Steel Structures
Time : Three Hours
Maximum Marks : 50
Note: i) Attempt any five questions.
ii) All questions carry equal marks.
iii) Use of IS : 800-2007 and steel tables are permitted.
iv) Missing data if any may be suitably assumed.

1. a) List out advantage and disadvantages of bolted connections

over riveted connections.
b) What do you mean by class of section? Explain with
examples.

2. Design a tension member to transmit a pull of 150 kN.

Effective length of a member is 4.5m. Member should consist
of a pair of angles connected to both sides of gusset plate.

3. Design a beam of span 5m with U.D.L. of 10kN/m (simply

supported) on span. apply all the checks.

4. Design a lap joint between the two plates each of width

120 mm, if the thickness of one plate is 16 mm and the other
is 12 mm. The joint has to transfer a design load of 160 kN.
The plates are of Fe410 grade.

5. Determine the design axial load capacity of the column

ISHB 300@577 N/m if the length of column is 3m and its
both ends pinned.

6. a) Define purlin, sag rods, wind bracing, principal rafter,

eaves, gutters with sketch.
b) Discuss various loads to be considered for design of roof
truss.

7. a) Write down design procedure for design of tension

member and compression member.
b) Define lag angle, tension splices.

8. Design a built up column consisting of two channels placed

back to back. The effective length of column is 6m and it has
to carry a factored load of 1500kN. Also design lacings for
the above column.
