DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES-II
Subject Code : CE-408
Paper ID : [A0627]
Time : 3 Hrs. Max. Marks : 60

INSTRUCTION TO CANDIDATES :
1. SECTION-A is COMPULSORY consisting of TEN questions carrying T WO marks
each.
2. SECTION-B contains FIVE questions carrying FIVE marks each and students
have to attempt any FOUR questions.
3. SECTION-C contains T HREE questions carrying T EN marks each and students
have to attempt any T WO questions.
4. Use of IS 800 and steel T ables is allowed. Assume data suitably, if not given.

SECTION–A

1. Write briefly :

a) Differentiate between edge distance and staggered distance.

b) Define slip factor.

c) Give specifications for fillet weld.

d) ‘Mr. Hudson found that the weights of truss members are proportional to the net area
of the largest tension flange.’ Give your comments.

e) Give value of impact allowance recommended for horizontal force along the rails in
context of gantry girder.

f) What is the function of sway bracings?

g) What is Aisle?

h) What is the difference between stringer and cross girder?

i) Draw sketch of framed connection.

j) What is the function of cleat angle?

SECTION–B
2. An ISLB 300 carrying udl of 50 kN/m has effective span of 8 m. This has to be
connected to the web of girder ISMB 450. Design suitable framed connection using
20 mm bolts.
3. A tie in a truss consists of a pair of angles ISA 100 × 75 × 10 mm welded on either side
of a gusset plate 15 mm thick through the longer legs. Design the welded joint.
4. Show analysis of an industrial building bent with knee braces with the columns hinged at
the base. Show deformed shape of columns and bending moment diagram.

5. The effective span of a plate girder deck type bridge for a single metre gauge track is
24 m. The dead load, live load and impact load reaction is 750 kN. The vertical reaction
due to overturning effect of wind at each of the girders is 115 kN. Design a suitable
bearing.
6. Write short note on :
a) Types of riveted connections

b) Design of column bracket.

SECTION–C
7. A gantry girder is to be designed for the following data :
Crane capacity = 100 kN
Longitudinal spacing of columns = 8 m

Gantry Girder spacing = 15 m

Wheel spacing of crane = 3.2 m
Edge distance = 1 m
Weight of crab car = 16 kN
Weight of crane girder =100 kN
An extra lateral beam with ties to the main girder is to be provided.

8. Differentiate between Deck type and Through type truss bridges. Show parts of truss
bridge. Explain the design procedure of stringers.
9. Discuss in brief about :
a) Design of steel Foot bridge

b) Design of eccentric Riveted joints.
