ADVANCED DESIGN OF METAL STRUCTURES
(2008 Course) (501405(a)) (Elective - II)
Time : 4 Hours] [Max. Marks : 100
Instructions to the candidates:
1) Solve two questions from each Section.
2) Figures should be drawn if needed
3) Use of I.S. 800, 875, Tubular sections, Aluminium sections, light gauge
section [801, 802, 806, 4014, 3908, 3909, 3921, 5384, 6445, 6476, 6475,
6449, 8147] is permitted.
4) Assume suitable data, if reguired.
5) Your paper will be assesed as whole.

SECTION - I
Q1) a) Compare steel and aluminium structural sections, indicate advantages
and disadvantages of aluminium sections. [6]
b) Explain elastic behaviour of aluminium over steel. [4]
c) Design using aluminium section the compression member to carry 250
kN of axial load. The effective length of member is 1.8m. Use usual
factor of safty. [8]

d) Find moment of resistance of ISALB 150 @ 12.1 kg/m, if used as simply

supported beam loaded with udl. Over a span of 4.5 m. Beam is laterally
constrained. [7]

Q2) a) Design the welded tube joint, where the two tubes meet at 45o with third
tube as shown in figure 2.a. [20]
l(strut) = 2.2 m
l(main) = 2.7 m

Design tube section and welded joint.

b) Enlist the suitability of tubular structure; give suitable example. [5]

P.T.O.
Q3) A hoarding structure is to be designed, supported by two built up columns as
back up structure.

The frame grid can be assumed as members spaced at 2m 1m interval.

Assume suitable weight for tube lights and other display accessories. Location
of structure has basic wind speed 37 m/s.
a) Suggest suitable structural scheme for hoarding structure with back up
structure draw neat diagram showing arrangement. [8]
b) Design grid member to cater for usual loads. [8]
c) Find the design force for foundation bolts / anchors. [9]
SECTION - II

Q4) a) Explain utility of castillated beam with its advantages & disadvantages.[5]
b) Explain/derive with numerical calculation how moment of resistance is
enhanced with castillation of rolled steel beam section. Use ISMB or
ISHB of depth 500 mm to illustrate. Use hexagonal pattern for castillation
with 200 mm as one of the side of hexagon span of beam 15 m. [15]
c) State expression for maximum bending stress in castillated beam. [5]

Q5) a) Draw schematic arrangements of structure used for transmission towers.

State in which situation each type is used. [5]
b) Explain in details different loads considered while analysing transmission
tower. [10]
c) Explain how tension in the cable is affected if it connects towers which
are errected on different elevations. [5]
d) Explain effect of broken cables to be accounted while designing
transmission tower. [5]

Q6) a) Design a column of length 2.7 m for axial load 500 kN. Using light
gauge section use lipped channel section. [6]
b) List advantages of light gauge steel sections. [4]
c) Differentiate stiffned and unstiffened sections. [4]
d) Design light gauge built up section for a beam of span 4.5m, loaded with
6.5 kN/m. udl. Use two lipped channel sections back to back. [11]
