INST RUCT IONS TO CANDIDAT ES :

1. Attempt a ny FIVE ques tion(s), each ques tion carries 6 marks.

1) a) A hole punching process is shown in figure 1a. From the given data in figure 1 b.
regarding the process, find the average stress developed in the cylindrical punch. Also
tell the nature of stress developed.
b) A shaft is acted by both bending moment(M) and torsion load (T). If the same shaft is
subjected to pure bending, then find the expression for bending moment (in terms of M
and T) that will generate the same maximum bending stress.

P = 120kN
d = 25mm
f = 8.0mm

a) b)

2) a) A steel cable of a lift has a nominal diameter of 30 mm. It is used to lift a raw material
weighing 38 kN. The cable has an effective modulus of elasticity of 150 GPa. If the
cable is 14 m long, how much will it stretch when the load is picked up?
b) Discuss how Rankine’s empirical relation for columns considers the limitation of
Euler’s theory.
3) a) Prove that in plane-stress situation the planes of maximum shear are not free from
normal stress.
b) How shear force diagram and bending moment diagram are helpful in analysis related
to beams?
4) An automobile driveshaft is made of a hollow steel tube with 40 mm outer diameter. The
shaft has to deliver 110 kW power rotating at 35 rev/s. If the allowable shear stress for steel
is 80 MPa, find the maximum inner diameter that the shaft may have.

5) A shaft with pulleys at B and D is supported by bearings at A and C as shown in figure 2.
The bearings offer only vertical support. Parallel forces are exerted by belts on the pulleys
at B and D. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagram for the same.

FIG.2
6) A simply supported wood beam of circular cross-section (diameter 250 mm) is supporting a
uniformly distributed load of intensity 7 kN/m on its entire span (3 m). Calculate the
maximum bending stress generated on (a) the layer that is at 20 mm from top surface and
(b) extreme bottom surface.
7) A cantilever beam of 6 m span and rectangular cross-section (70 mm wide and 170 mm
deep) caries load as shown in figure 3. Find the slope and deflection at the free end.

FIG.3
8) A hollow column of 2.5 m length with inner diameter of 35 mm and outer diameter of 45
mm is pin jointed at both ends. Compare the crippling loads given by Euler’s and
Rankine’s formula. Also find the length below which the Euler’s formula ceases to apply if
the elastic limit is 220 MPa. Given: E = 210 GPa, yield strength = 300 MPa and Rankine
constant = 1/7500.
