Case Study Review: Kansei Engineering
The e-journal that I chose to make a review with is a study from Indonesia with
the title: Ergonomic Work System Design Using Kansei Engineering Approach,
authored by Hari Purnomo, Vitri Lestari, and Alex Kisanjani. In their study, they have
seen the problem about work fatigue and how the employees were complaining about
pain and aches in their upper muscles and waists. They address this problem by
designing a new work system design using Kansei Engineering. By addressing the
problem, they come up with a solution that is expected to increase productivity with their
workers. Using Kansei Engineering, they addressed the psychological and physical
effects of the ineffective system and ergonomics to the workers of PT ASA Yogyakarta.
In the end, they came up with a solution of having new work system designs including
“sewing chairs and tables which are adjusted to the size of the workers anthropometry
with approved backrests on chairs, lighting lamps replaced with LED lights, plug lamps
which is sited in the article, there are approximately 2 million workers experience fatigue
in work. In PT ASA Yogyakarta, the equipment and furniture being used by the workers
are not aligned to human ergonomics which resulted to poor production. Ergonomics is
Research came up for the improvement and solution for the problem. With kansei
a product which suites’ consumers desire and needs. They followed several steps in
employees who has highest complained from body parts. After that they collected
kansei words from the answers in the interview then they evaluate the validity and
reliability of the collected kansei words. Using SSPS software, words were simplified to
make mapping of the product easier. It resulted to the characteristics and specifications
of the product. With all the characteristics and specifications, product is translated and
visualized into 3D then it should pass the Stuart-Maxwell Test of marginal homogeneity.
Data after analysis shows that 15.18% of the subjects experienced neck pain,
9.82% for left pain and 8.93 % each for right shoulder pain and waist pain. After they
evaluated the randomly distributed questionnaire, the result shows that 10 valid and
reliable kansei words for sewing chair and 9 valid and reliable for sewing table. These
are the answers of the respondents involving the sewing: it is not innovative, not soft,
not durable and it is slippery. While for the sewng table: its is not durable, not durable
and the design is no simple. With the given problem and solutions this data and design
was presented.
The design of the sewing chair and table is al based on the user’s
the design of the product. This also may be useful in adding up the validity and reliability
of kansei engineering in terms of specific designs that will give satisfaction to the user
