SEMBLANCE
Poe's paternal great-grandfather, John Poe, emigrated
from Ireland to the United States in the eighteenth
century and became a farmer, marrying an
Englishwoman. David and Elizabeth had seven
children. The mayor, David, was the father of Edgar
David Poe son, a law student, left this career to become
an actor.30 32 In 1804 he met the beautiful Miss
Arnold - an actress of great charm and with an
extensive repertoire: he came to represent about two
hundred papers—, which was married at the time with
a Mr. Hopkins, who would die shortly after. David and
Elizabeth married six months later and settled in
Boston, Massachusetts, where their first two children
were born.
CHILDHOOD
Edgar Allan Poe lost his parents, traveling theater actors, when he was just two years old.
Little Edgar was educated by John Allan, a wealthy businessman from Richmond. Poe's
relationships with his adoptive father were traumatic; also the early death of his mother
would become one of his recurring obsessions. From 1815 to 1820 he lived with John Allan
and his wife in the United Kingdom, where he began his education.
