Module 6
CONJUGATION AND USE OF ADJECTIVES
I.Learning Outcomes: At the end of the module, students are expected to have:
A. Distinguished I-adjectives and Na-adjectives in terms of their endings and conjugation;
B. Described themselves, other people and places using appropriate Japanese adjectives; and
C. Conjugated I-adjectives and Na-adjectives in the present and past forms, and affirmative
and negative forms.
II. Introduction
Adjectives are function words that specifically modify or describe nouns or pronouns.
In English and Japanese, one word adjectives are placed before nouns or pronouns. Unlike
English, Japanese adjectives are of two different types: I-adjectives and Na-adjectives.
Nouns Adjectives
Bara (roses) Fast: 速い (hayai)
Sensei ( teacher) Delicious: おいしい (oishii)
Orenji ( orange) Deep: 深い (fukai)
Shokuryoo kyookyuu ( food supply) Enough: 十分な (juubun na)
Asa ( morning) Cold: 寒い (samui)
Tabemono ( food) Rotten: 腐った (kusatta)
Tatemono ( building) Small: 小さい (chiisai)
Booru ( ball) Round: 丸い (marui)
Kuruma (car) Red: 赤い (akai)
Kawa (river) Energetic: 元気な (genki na)
B. Analysis .
1. Examine the two types of adjectives presented in the table below. Compare
ending letter of the I-adjective and the Na-adjective. When conjugated to present affirmative,
present negative, past affirmative and past negative, what letter is removed from the original
I-adjective ? How about the Na-adjective? What suffix is added ? When the Na-adjective is
placed immediately before the modified word, what word is added between the adjective
and the noun?

Present Omoshirokunai desu Shizuka desu

Present Omoshirokunai desu. Shizuka dewa arimasen deshita
Negative
Past Omoshirokatta desu. Shizuka deshita
affirmative
Past Negative Omoshirokunakatta desu. Shizuka dewa arimasen deshita
Application in Shizuka na ie ( quiet house)
a sentence: Sono eiga wa omoshirokatta desu.
Kare wa shizuka na ie ni sunde
(The movie was funny.) imasu.
( He lives in a quiet house.)
2. Watch the lecture video on the use and conjugation of the two types of adjectives and
the live discussion via Zoom .Then post your questions on the discussion boards if there are
things that are not clear.
C. Assessment (Quiz)
Classify the underline adjective in as I-adjective (Pure Adjective) or Na-adjective
( Verbal Adjectives). Then, give the correct conjugated form as indicated in parenthesis
( whether present affirmative, negative, past affirmative, past negative) . If it is a na-adjective
and is found immediately before the modified noun, add the word “na” before the noun.
Then, write the English translation.
Submit your answers as Module 6 Quiz .
D. Assignment
Choose any of the following options to accomplish:
1. Choose a scenic spot in your place which you will try to promote to Japanese tourists.
Prepare a script of a two-minute promotional speech. Use any of the adjectives provided
in the word bank below. Take a screen shot or an image that goes with your description.
2. Describe yourself or any of your loved ones in terms of physical appearance, virtues or
values possessed , etc. Take a screen shot of that person you have selected.
Note: Submit the script in MS word or as file. Then , prepare to deliver this orally in class the
meeting before the Midterm Written exams. This will be your Oral exam. You may
read your script during the exam.
