B. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

1. GENERAL
The fire extinguishing system extinguishes the fire by means of carbon dioxide gas.
The system consists essentially of CO2 cylinders, main distributing valves, manifold, CO2
nozzles in compartment protected, and pipe lines connection these main parts.

2. DISTRIBUTING VALVES
Quick acting valve(s) are installed in the pipe lines to the each protected space and
connected to the carbon dioxide gas supply piping.
They serve to direct the gas to the each protected space by the operation of pulling lever at
control station, which opens the line from the gas supply to the spaces afire.

3. CYLINDER VALVES
Quick acting valves are installed at CO2 cylinders and are connected to the CO2 manifold
piping. They serve to direct the gas to the each protected space by the operation of pulling
lever at control station, which opens the cylinders and gas supplied to the spaces afire.

4. DISCHARGING NOZZLES
The carbon dioxide pipe line terminates in nozzles at the space protected.
In the each protected space the multi jet nozzles are installed, through which liquid
carbon dioxide to the protected space.

5. CARBON DIOXIDE SUPPLY

Cylinders are manifold together providing sufficient gas to extinguish a fire in the space
protected. The carbon dioxide gas contained therein in a clean, dry, non-corrosive and non-
poisonous substance which will eliminate combustion.
It is stored under pressure in the steel cylinders and extinguishes fire by smothering it.
An instruction chart is furnished to indicate the proper discharge of cylinders for each
compartment.

6. CARBON DIOXIDE AS AN EXTINGUISHING AGENT

The "Fain" fire extinguishing system uses carbon dioxide gas as the extinguishing agent.

For fire extinguishing applications carbon dioxide has a number of desirable properties.
It is non-corrosive, non-damaging and leaves no residue to clean up after releasing. It
provides its own pressure for discharge through pipes and nozzles. Since it is a gas, it will
penetrate and spread to all parts of a hazard.
It will not conduct electricity and can therefore be used on live electrical hazards. It can be
effectively used on practically all combustible materials except for a few active metals and
metal hydrides and materials such as cellulose nitrate, which contain available oxygen.

Under normal conditions carbon dioxide is a colourless, odourless gas with a density about
50 per cent greater than the density of air. Many insist they can detect and odor of carbon
dioxide, but this may be due to impurities or chemical effects in the nostrils.
Carbon dioxide is easily liquefied by compression and cooling. By further cooling and
expansion it can be converted to the solid state.

The carbon dioxide is stored in liquid state in steel cylinders carefully tested for strength under
governmental supervision. The pressure within the cylinder depends on the temperature.
The relationship between the temperature and the pressure is shown on the curve given in
Figure 1. although the existing quantity of carbon dioxide is never determined by using a

pressure gauge. It may be determined only by the weighing the cylinder

Each cylinder is provided with a safety relief valve which will release the gas before the
pressure exceeds the cylinder's test pressure. Cylinders should e stored in a cool place
whenever possible. The maximum temperature of safe storage for cylinders 55℃.

C. SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

1. Carbon dioxide is not poisonous, but a person cannot breathe and will suffocate in an
atmosphere of carbon dioxide, caution must be taken when entering any space filled with
this gas.

2. Before discharging carbon dioxide into the compartment, make sure that no one is in the
compartment afire.

3. Entering the compartment extinguished, make certain that fire has been extinguished and
oxygen gas detector shows that all portions are filled with only fresh air.

4. It will be necessary for a person to enter a space before it is thoroughly ventilated, he may
do so by using a fresh air mask or other type of self-contained breathing apparatus.
Do not use a rebreathing type of mask or a simple gas mask. No one should enter such a
space without help of a person such as an observer or a standby located outside the
space.

5. Provide adequate aisle ways and routes of exit and keep them clear at all times, not to
disturb person from retreating.

6. Should a person be overcome by carbon dioxide, it is essential that he should be

immediately rescued from the space containing the gas. To revive a person so overcome,
give him plenty of fresh air and apply artificial respiration (as in the case of drowning)
without the us of carbon dioxide as a stimulant. Call a physician.

7. Do not approach the space where fire has been extinguished with an open flame or a
lighted cigarette as the possible presence of flammable vapors may cause an explosion.

8. Symptoms of carbon dioxide suffocation are as follows.

a. Increased respiration rate.

b. Increased heart action.
c. Faintness.

G. MAINTENANCE

1. AFTER FIRE HAS BEEN EXTINGUISHED

Open all doors, hatches, vents, and other openings to thoroughly ventilate the space before
allowing anyone to enter.
*Caution : DO NOT APPROACH the space with an open flame or a lighted cigarette as the
possible presence of inflammable vapor may cause an explosion.

a) Remove the empty cylinders(45Kg) and have them recharged as soon as possible.
(See instructions given later on for the removal of cylinders.)
b) Reset any pressure-operated devices.
c) Remove the empty pilot cylinders and have them recharged as soon as possible.
d) Close control valve to it normal, tightly-closed position.
e) Inspect any nozzle's orifices to make certain so that they are free and clear from any foreign
material.
f) Inspect the safety discs in any safety valves at the ends of the manifolds. If a disc has bee
damaged. it must be replaced.
g) Reinstall the fully charged cylinders.

2. PERIODIC INSPECTION
The Fain CO2 system installed requires no more than ordinary. Care to insure its proper
operation at all times. Frequent inspections should be made, however, as experience has
shown that emergency equipment of this kind is often unintentionally neglected or tampered
with.

1) ONCE EVERY MONTH

a) Make a general inspection of the entire system to ascertain that nothing has been placed to
interfere with the operation of the equipment. Inspect all piping and equipment for
mechanical breakage. Replace any damaged equipment immediately.
b) Inspect piping and hose for any mechanical damage. Operate main valve(P.O.D) several
times to make certain it does not stick.

2) ONCE EVERY YEAR

It is recommended that the system be inspected by an experienced Service Engineer of
Fain Co., Ltd.

a. First of all, remove pilot cylinder(s) from the pilot box, then The Fain cylinders should be
removed and weighed to determine the consist of carbon dioxide. See instructions for
removal included in this book after proceeding. In order to get the weight of Co2 gas, first
weigh the gross weight and deduct the tare weight from the gross weight. If the net
weight(Co2 gas) has decreased from the proper gas charge(45Kg) by more than 10 per cent,
the cylinder must be recharged to its full rated capacity. The proper gas charge is indicated
on the cylinder body. Record the net weight of gas in each cylinder on record sheets.

b. Remove caps on any safety outlets installed at the ends of any cylinder manifolds to make
certain that the safety discs therein are intact. If any disc is found to be damaged, it must be
replaced.

3) ONCE EVERY TWO YEARS

a. Blow out all piping with air or carbon dioxide to make certain that if there any blocked.
Before blowing out system, remove dirt traps from the ends of the distributing piping.
Before blowing out system, remove all of the starting heads and following heads from all
those of the cylinder valves.

*CAUTION :
DO NOT use water or oxygen for blowing out the pipe lines. The use of oxygen is especially
dangerous as the possible presence of even a minute quantity of oil may cause an explosion.

3) Recharge and Reinstallation

Refill the pilot cylinder which is empty and re-install to the origin place.
Refer to “instruction of CO2 recharge".

6.SELECTION VALVE

1) Function
Selection valve is a pressure-operated valve system, which normally closed, and when the
pilot CO2 is led to this valve, it will be opened by the pressure of CO2.
If required, it also can be opened manually, as described below.
Turn/pull the main valve handle/lever as marked on valve.

2) Test Procedure
a) Pressure Test
Connect the compressed air to pilot pipe line and then apply pressure very gradually.
If the valve is opened under about 7kg/cm2, it is normal.
b) Handling Test
Make sure that this valve can be open & close easily by the lever in manual during
carrying out the test 6-2-a.
c) Reset all parts after above test, especially the handle should be reset to it's normal
position perfectly.

7. SAFETY VALVE

1) Function
When CO2 leaks from CO2 cylinder and is connected to manifold, there is a possibility of
opening other CO2 cylinders by its stored pressure. Therefore this leaking CO2 should be
purged out safely There is one safety device of pressure in manifold. When manifold
pressure increases abnormally, safety valve will be destroyed, and inner pressure in
manifold will escape to atmosphere.

2) Restoration
This safety valve to be checked periodically.

Smoke Detection System SDS-48 safetec
1 Overview

1 Overview
The smoke detection system SDS-48 is used for continuous smoke monitoring in up to 48 cargo holds.

For this a network of pipes simultaneously draws air samples from all cargo spaces, which are then fed to the
smoke detection panel. In most cases, the pipes for the CO2 fire extinguishing system are used for this. The
fire extinguishing equipment and the smoke detection system can both be connected to the same network by
means of 3-way valves.

The interpretation of the lines is continuous, not sequential. All lines are evaluated anytime. Each line is
connected to its own smoke detector to ensure a proper allocation of a fire event to its place of origin.

For remote display and handling of smoke alarms and fault warnings, the control panel is installed on the
bridge and is connected to the smoke detection panel in the CO2 room via a 4-wire cable (RS-485-bus
cable).

The system in its layout complies with the requirements of FSS Code Chapter 10 (sample extraction smoke
detection systems), furthermore EN 54-2, -4 and -20 as well as IEC 60092-504 (control panel). The system is
designed to safeguard against explosion according to IEC 60079. For the according standards the fan units fulfil,
please refer to the operation manual DOK02.055, chapter 3 (Relevant Regulations).

2 Technical Description

2 Technical Description

2.1 System Description

A typical smoke detection system consists of the following primary components:

• a smoke detection panel in the CO2- room

• a control panel on the bridge or in the fire control room for remote display and handling of alarms and
fault warnings
• a fan unit for drawing air from the cargo holds

in addition, if needed:

• one or more extension panels for connecting additional detection lines

• a relay box with voltage-free contacts for a fire alarm for each individual detection line
• additional repeater panels

The electrical connection between the smoke detection panel, the control panel, repeater panels and / or the
relay box is provided by an RS-485-bus cable. Optional extension panels are connected to the smoke
detection panel via the smoke detector connection cable.

2.2 System Components

2.2.1 Smoke Detection Panel

The following smoke detection panels are available:

Model Description Data Sheet

SDS-0 Smoke detection panel without built-in detection lines SDS02.100.01
SDS-4 Smoke detection panel with 1 to 4 detection lines SDS02.104.01
SDS-8 Smoke detection panel with 5 to 8 detection lines SDS02.108.01
SDS-12 Smoke detection panel with 9 to 12 detection lines SDS02.112.01
The cited data sheets can be found in the appendix of this manual.

The smoke detection panel SDS-0 contains the control module, the power supply module, along with a
galvanic isolator for safeguarding against explosion. Furthermore the panel provides all appropriate terminals
for external feeds.

• Main power supply 220/230 V 50/60Hz or 110/115V 60Hz

• Emergency power supply 220/230 V 50/60Hz or 110/115V 60Hz
• Fan 1 of the fan unit
• Fan 2 of the fan unit
• RS-485-bus for repeater panel(s) and the relay box
• Combined fault warning (2 sets of voltage-free relay contact )
• Combined fire alarm (2 sets of voltage-free relay contact)
• General alarm (2 min delay, voltage-free relay contact)
• Additional voltage-free relay output for switching max. 250V under a fire alarm
• Output for duplicating the panel buzzer 24V (additional buzzer optional)
The voltage-free relay contacts in the control- and repeater panels can be used additionally for passing on fire-
and general alarms and fault warnings, however for safety- relevant connections to the ship´s systems the voltage-

free contacts of the smoke detection panel shall be used (standardized interface). For connection of the voltage-
free contacts to the ship´s systems refer to section 3.5.

In addition to the components in the smoke detection panel SDS-0, the smoke detection panels SDS-4 and
SDS-8 contain integrated detector boxes, located in an additional housing. Both housings are permanently
attached to each other. Each detector box is connected to one sampling line.

The hose connections for the detection lines and the connecting fittings for the fan unit are affixed to the
upper housing.

Air samples from each detection line have to flow through the detector box with a built-in smoke detector
assigned to the line. A pressure switch for monitoring the airflow in the detection line is attached to each
detector box.

In addition to the components in the smoke detection panel SDS-8, the smoke detection panel SDS-12
contains an additional permanently attached housing for up to 4 additional detector boxes.

The smoke detectors automatically self-monitor for contamination. With increasing contamination, the
sensitivity of the smoke detector is adapted and thus held constant. When the contamination can no longer be
balanced by this adjustment, a fault warning will be set off for the affected smoke detector. The loss of
function in a smoke detector likewise will be recognized and reported by the smoke detection panel.

If the amount of air drawn through a detection line is too small, the pressure switch on the detector box will
produce a fault warning for this detection line. The upper limit of the air flow is not monitored by SDS-48,
the integrity of the piping system shall be controlled visually and by testing the proper function periodically
(see table 3.9.2, Initial Start-up and Service Checklist).

2.2.2 Extension Panel

The extension panel consists of one or two housings permanently attached to each other. Detector boxes are
located in these housings as in the upper housing of the smoke detection panel. In this way more detector
lines can be connected to the smoke detection system.

Every extension panel is connected to the smoke detection panel not by the RS-485-bus, but by an
intrinsically safe bus using a 2-line cable (up to 8 additional lines) or a 4-line cable (up to 16 additional
lines).

The following extension panels are available:

2.2.3 Control- and Repeater Panels

The control- and repeater panels allow for optical and audible indication of all fire alarms and fault warnings,
parallel to the smoke detection panel, and for the operation of the smoke detection system. They can be
installed at any place on the ship and are available in wall-mounted form or for installation in a console.
They contain a control module like the smoke detection panel, but they don’t have any connections to smoke
detectors. The connection to the smoke detection panel takes place via the RS-485-bus. It is possible to
connect max. three panels to the system. The following connection terminals are available in the repeater
panels:

• RS-485-bus from the smoke detection panel

• Common fault warning (2 sets of voltage-free relay contacts)
• Common fire alarm (2 sets of voltage-free relay contacts))
• Fire Alarm not accepted for 2 minutes (labelled "General Alarm", 1 set voltage-free relay contact)
• Output for duplicating the panel buzzer 24V (additional buzzer optional)

The panel which is installed on the bridge or in the fire control room, receives the address “2”. This panel is
the control panel of the smoke detection system. Only pressing the ACCEPT button on the device having this
address will acknowledge alarm and fault warnings at the smoke detection panel and at any repeater panel. In
addition, setting off the 2 min delayed alarm is prevented and any relays labelled "General Alarm" that have
been triggered are reset. At repeater panels with addresses different from “2” and at the smoke detection
panel, alarm and fault warnings can only be acknowledged for the respective device. The 2 min delayed
alarm cannot be influenced from these devices.

Exception: if no control panel is connected to the smoke detection system, the 2 min delayed ("General
Alarm") relay will be controlled by the ACCEPT button on the smoke detection panel.

The following control- or repeater panels are available:

2.2.4 Fan Unit

Two fans are located in a common housing, consisting of one ventilator and one electric motor each, one of
which is always running. Every 24 hours the smoke detection panel automatically switches over to the other
fan. Likewise should there be a loss of function of one fan the other fan will be switched on.

The air supply and exhaust connections are located on the upper side of the fan unit. The fan unit comes
delivered on vibration dampers. The connections for the air-supply and -exhaust to the pipeline network are
made with hose couplings.

For further information regarding the fan unit please refer to the additional operation manual DOK02.055.

2 Technical Description

2.2.5 Relay Module and Relay Box

If needed, the optional relay module makes voltage-free fire alarm contacts available for every detection line.
For smoke detection systems with up to 8 detection lines, the relay module can be integrated into the smoke
detection panel.

For smoke detection systems with more than 8 detection lines a relay box is available, which exists of a relay
module and an additional enclosure. To allow for short cable paths, the relay box can be positioned close to
the ship’s control system where its relay contacts should be connected. Connection to the smoke detection
system takes place through the RS-485-bus.

A relay on the relay module will be activated, if the smoke detection system issues a fire alarm for the
appropriate detection line. An activated relay will be deactivated by the reset function (refer to section 4.8.2).

The relay module has a green and a red LED for indication of module functions. Please refer to Data Sheets
BG02.908 and SDS02.924 (see appendix).

2.3 Planning the system

Depending on the required number of detection lines to be connected, there are different possibilities for
putting together the smoke detection panel and extension panels. The smoke detection systems come
standard as shown on diagrams SDS02.031 and SDS02.032 (see appendix).

A maximum of 3 external devices can be connected to the bus cable. So a maximum of 3 repeater panels or
relay boxes can be added on.

2.4 Numbering the Detection Lines

The detection lines of every smoke detection system are numbered beginning with “1” and continuing
through to the highest line number. A label next to the hose connection for each individual line will give the
line number belonging to it. This line number will be shown in the display in case of a fire alarm or a line-
related fault warning (see sections 4.3, 4.4 and 4.5). These numbers normally are set prior to delivery at
safetec by putting the XPERT cards into the smoke detector sockets.

WARNING! Because the line number is set in the smoke detection socket, a smoke detector head fitted
into another socket for testing purposes will indicate the line number of the new socket / detection line
under a fire alarm or fault warning!

WARNING! If for any reasons it is necessary to replace one or more sockets be sure the XPERT
Cards with the proper address numbers are correctly allocated to their sockets! Otherwise correct
identification of the detection lines is not possible!

2.5 Safeguarding against Explosion

The areas in the smoke detection panel, in the extension panel(s) and in the fan units where air drawn from
the monitored holds passes through are designed to safeguard against explosion. The areas of the smoke
detection panel and extension panel(s) where air passes through are designed “intrinsically safe” according to
EN 60079 - 25.

Information about the safeguarding against explosion of the fan units is given in the additional operation
manual DOK02.055, together with useful instructions how to maintain safety.

3 Installation and Initial Start-up

3 Installation and Initial Start-up

3.1 Installation Location

The smoke detection panels and any extension panels are generally installed in the CO2 room. However they
can also be affixed on the bridge. When installing the smoke detection system outside the bridge, a control
panel, available either for mounting on a wall or in a console, will be installed on the bridge to report fire
alarms and fault warnings.

To be able to easily read and service the smoke detection panel, the bottom of the housing should be situated
approx. 1.10 - 1.20 m above the floor. Any extension panels are installed normally next to the smoke
detection panel at the same height. Equally the required minimal distance for laying out the hoses must be
taken into account. When using hose brackets, the minimal distance between two panels is 40 cm. When the
hoses are tied into a bundle without using brackets, the minimal distance between two panels shall be 25 cm.

Securing the hoses by tying them together

The fan units are installed in the vicinity of the smoke detection panel in upright position standing on the
shock mounts. For servicing purposes a clearance of 300 mm above and 50 mm beside the fan unit must be
observed (type: SDS-M0440). For more detailed information necessarily refer to the additional operation
manual DOK02.055, chapter 7 (Installation).

3.2 Smoke Accumulators, Pipes and Hose Connections

Provided that a CO2 fire extinguishing system is installed, the air samples will be fed via steel pipes to the 3-
way switching valve. The connection between 3-way valves and smoke detection panel is usually made with
flexible hoses (see following table). The minimum inner diameter of the pipes and hoses must be not less
than 12mm. The pipes which connect fan unit with smoke detection panel, extension panels and air out must
be of conductive material. The pipes must have conductive connections and must be connected to conductive
earth.

To prevent water buildup, the steel pipes must be installed with slight inclination. Automatic drain valves
must be provided at all low points. For the steel pipes bends should be used instead of elbows.

The array of smoke accumulators must be chosen according FSS-Code Chapter10, Rule 2.3.1.2.
Construction measures must ensure that all smoke accumulators and all lines draw approximately the same
amount of air. This can be achieved e.g. by a symmetrical layout of the detection pipes and their smoke
accumulators. The number of smoke accumulators arranged in a line one after another should be kept as
small as possible.

If smoke accumulators are arranged in a line their orifice sizes must be adapted in a way that they all will
suck in an even amount of air volume.

7
Smoke Detection System SDS-48 safetec
3 Installation and Initial Start-up

For proper airflow it also is vital to determine the correct air pipe size. Total number of detection lines and
length of air pipe must be considered by planning staff. safetec has to be informed about total number of
detection lines for evaluation of correct hose sockets.

The proper layout of the piping shall be tested according FSS Code Chapter 10, Rule 2.4.2.2: when smoke is
fed into the most remote smoke accumulator the alarm shall go off not more than 300 s later (180 s at vehicle
decks).

Smoke accumulators from more than one enclosed space shall not be connected to the same detection pipe.

3.5 Voltage-free Relay Contacts

Voltage-free relay contacts are available at the smoke detection panel, the control panel and each repeater panel
for the following signals (switch over contacts, max. load: 42V~/60V=/1.25A, additionally a second set of
contacts for fire alarm, max. load: 250V~/6A, see below):

• Fault warning (Clamps 25/26/35):

The relay for fault warning is activated when the smoke detection system has no fault warnings (normal
operation). As soon as at least one fault is reported or when at least one detection line is turned off (offline) or
when both fans are switched off, the fault relay will fall into its deactivated state (fault state). This ensures
that a total loss of power is reported as fault. See “Important Note” at the end of this section 3.5.

• Fire alarm (Clamps 21/22/31 [42V~] and 9/10/11 [250V~]):

The relay for the fire alarm is activated as soon as at least one line detects fire. The relay is reset to its
deactivated state by executing the reset function. A second relay for the fire alarm with voltage-free contacts
for switching 250V~/6A is also ready for operation in the smoke detection panel (not in the repeater panel).
When a separate fire alarm relay is required for each line, a relay module or a relay box can be used. The
relay box comes in its own housing and is connected to the smoke detection panel via the RS-485-bus cable.
Please also refer to section 2.2.5.

• External Fire Alarm (acc. FSS Code Ch. 9, 2.5.1.1) (Clamps 23/24/33):
The relay for the external fire alarm is activated when a fire alarm is not acknowledged within 2 minutes at
the repeater panel with the address “2”. The relay is reset to its deactivated state by pressing the ACCEPT
button on the repeater panel with the address “2”. Connection terminals for external fire alarm relay contacts
are located in the smoke detection panel and in each repeater panel. If no repeater panel is connected to the
smoke detection system, the external fire alarm relay will be controlled by the ACCEPT button at the smoke
detection panel.

NOTE: The terminals for the contacts of the external fire alarm relay are labelled “General Alarm”.
This means that the external fire alarm may be realized with the ship´s general alarm system.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: This output is not demanded acc. FSS Code Ch. 10 (Sample Extraction Smoke
Detection Systems). Its usage is optional.

• Monitoring of the Voltage-free Relay Contacts:

The interface to the ship´s systems has to be monitored. As SDS-48 provides voltage-free contacts this has to
be executed from the ship´s systems. safetec recommends the following method (pictured next page):

3.6 RS-485-Bus Cable and Terminal Resistors

Control / repeater panels and the relay box are connected to the smoke detection panel via a RS-485-bus
cable. Two lines are designated for the power supply and two lines for data transmission. The connection
terminals for the RS-485-BUS cable have the same numbers on all devices:

Terminal 17: + 28V Terminal 19: Bus A

Terminal 18: 0V Terminal 20: Bus B

Smoke detection panels, control- and repeater panels and, if applicable, a relay box must be connected
linearly via the bus cable (not radially!).

Both cable ends of the RS-485-bus cable must be terminated with resistors of 120 Ω each at terminals 19 and
20. See also diagram no. SDS02.080 in the appendix of this manual.

The smoke detection panel and the control panel already contain a terminal resistor at delivery. If additional
repeater panels are connected, only the last panel receives a terminal resistor.
The connection between smoke detection panel, the control / repeater panels and the relay box is constantly
monitored. Defective cable connections or defective assemblies will be indicated at the smoke detection
panel and at the repeater panel (FAULT: Data Transfer Device -x-).

NOTE: Missing terminal resistors can lead to faults in the data transmission !

3.8 Application of SDS-48 with Electrical CO2 Control System E-CO2

The smoke detection system can be applied for cargo spaces which have an electrically controlled CO2
release system E-CO2. In this case the 3-way valves of the smoke detection system will be combined with an
electrical actuator, which allows a remote control of the 3-way valves from the release panel CP-30.
Nevertheless the electric actuator allows manual operation. For details please refer to manual of the E-CO2
system.

3.9 Initial Start-up

3.9.1 Preparation

Before starting the smoke detection system all components and the necessary piping system must be installed
in accordance with the project designs. Main and emergency power supplies must be on line.

Important Note:
The smoke detection system must not be in operation
during loading/unloading cargo, during cleaning and
when paint work is going on in the monitored areas
(contamination hazard for the smoke detectors)!

Carry out commissioning of the smoke detection system according the following “Initial Start-up and
Service-Checklist”. The filled checklist shall be kept in the documents of the appropriate Smoke Detection
System.

Check all pipe and hose connections for secure fastening and support. Check for
mechanical damage of the piping using suitable methods.
3 Assignment of Pipe and Hose Connections
Check the assignment of pipe and hose connections to the hose fittings of the smoke
detection system. Incorrect connections will cause incorrect alarm indication in a fire.
4 Cleaning the Pipes *)
Thoroughly clean all pipes with compressed air. The pipes must be free of rust,
dirt and other particles.
WARNING: Before doing this, ensure that the flexible hoses are disconnected
from the smoke detection panel and extension, because otherwise the pressure
switches which monitor the air flow could be damaged. See section 5.3.9.
5 Fastening of the Smoke Detection System
Check all installations in the smoke detection system, including the fan unit, for secure
mounting.
6 Cable Connections
Check all cable connections for proper position and correct connection.
7 Connection of Cable Shields
Check the correct connection of the shields for the cables to the repeater panel(s), relay
box and extension panel(s). See sections 3.3 and 3.4.

Check the 120 Ohm terminal resistors at the ends of the bus cable.
See diagram SDS02.080 in the appendix.
10 Turning on the Smoke Detection System
Set the 3-way valves to position “smoke detection system”. Ensure that no painting
or welding is going on in the monitored areas (contamination hazard for the smoke
detectors).
Turn on the main and auxiliary power supplies. The line and address number setting
shown during the start message must match the actual line and address number (see
section 4.2)
Acknowledge any fault warnings with a quick press of the ACCEPT button and, if
necessary, remedy the reported fault (see fault table section 5.2).
11 Lamp and Buzzer Test **)
Carry out a lamp and buzzer test. For this, press the ACCEPT button not longer than 6
seconds. All lamps, the background lighting for the LC display and the buzzer must be
on while the button is pressed.
12 Fan Test *)
Check whether the active fan is drawing air. Then check the second fan by
activating the special function “Switch Fans” (see section 4.8.3). To test
the automatic switch over function open upper doors of all SDS-panels
to reduce air pressure which simulates a fan failure.
WARNING: Do not remove fuses F2 – F5 while fans are running.
*) This test shall be repeated every 3 month / **) This test/step shall be repeated daily / ***) This test shall be repeated every 30
days

14
Smoke Detection System SDS-48 safetec
3 Installation and Initial Start-up

13 Power Supply
Check function of main and emergency power monitoring. For this, switch off the
main and the emergency power supply one at a time. A corresponding fault warning
“FAULT: Main Supply” or “FAULT: Emergency Supply” must appear.
14 Air Flow Monitoring *)
Close each 3-way valve one at a time. After a few seconds a corresponding fault
warning “FAULT: Airflow Line -x-” must appear for each line.
15 Smoke Test *)
Carry out a smoke test for each smoke accumulator. For this, bring a smoke generator in
the vicinity of each point in the cargo spaces where air is drawn. A suitable smoke
generator is available on request (part no. B30.001). Check the fire alarm at the smoke
detection panel and at the repeater panel(s).

The fire alarm has to go off 180 s (vehicle decks) resp. 300 s (container- and general cargo
holds) after the insertion of the smoke even for the most remote smoke accumulator.

For the 3-monthly-check, cigarette smoke can alternatively be blown directly into the
flexible hose at smoke detection panel. Important: Smoke must be present at the smoke
detector for several seconds. Close appropriate 3-way-valve to prevent quick removal
of smoke during test.
16 External Fire Alarm
Let a fire alarm go for at least 2 minutes without acknowledging it. The LCD will then
display: FIRE ALARM NOT ACCEPTED WITHIN 2 MIN. An external fire alarm
relay must be activated.
17 Final Test *)
Reset the fire alarm and ensure that no fault warnings are indicated. When no fault and no
fire alarms are showed any more, the smoke detection system is ready for operation.
WARNING: In case of any spray paint or welding works in cargo holds the SDS-system
shall be switched off to avoid soiling of optical components.
Removing the transformer fuse F1 from the power supply module can take the system out
of operation.
*) This test shall be repeated every 3 month

4.1 Display and Operating Elements

The smoke detection panel, the control- and repeater panels have the same indicating and operating elements. All
fire alarms and fault warnings displayed in the smoke detection panel also appear on the control- and an optional
repeater panel.

An acoustic signalling device (buzzer), an LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and three lamps (LEDs) for
“SYSTEM ON” (green), “FIRE” (red) and “FAULT” (yellow) are provided as status and alarm indicators.

Operation of the smoke detection system takes place via the ACCEPT button on the smoke detection panel
or on the repeater panel. A simple push of the button acknowledges any alarms or fault warnings at the
respective panel. The panel with the address “2” furthermore allows for acknowledging all panels of the
smoke detection system (smoke detection panel and any other repeater panel). This panel is normally
installed on the bridge or in the fire control room. Please observe: This panel is the control panel of the
smoke detection system.

The display has one window, it is divided into 2 lines of 40 characters each. The lines display messages as
described in the following chapters. Please be aware that the lower line will not always be shown in the
window.

4.8.4 Display Smoke Detector Diagnosis Report (Display Diagnoses ...)

The smoke detectors automatically self-correct their alarm threshold while they accumulate dirt in order to
have a uniform response sensitivity. If they become too dirty an accordant fault warning will occur. The
current condition of each detector can be read out at any time, so that, for instance, preventative measures
can be carried out during maintenance. The read-out takes place with the help of the special function
“Diagnoses Smoke Detectors”. After selecting this function, the following appears:

DIAGNOSES SMOKE DETECTORS (Line:Value)

01:25 02:25 03:25 04:25 05:25

The number before the colon gives the line number for the smoke detector while the number after the colon
gives its diagnosis value. The diagnosis values must be interpreted as follows:

Diagnosis value Meaning

0-4 The smoke detector is dirty and must be cleaned.

A fault warning FAULT: Dirt in Line -x- is issued.

5 - 17 The smoke detector is slightly dirty and should be cleaned during maintenance.
The smoke detector is still operational.

18 - 32 The smoke detector is operational and clean.

33 - 45 The smoke detector is slightly dirty and should be cleaned during maintenance.
The smoke detector is still operational.

46 - 127 The smoke detector is dirty and must be cleaned.

A fault warning FAULT: Dirt in Line -x is issued.

4.8.5 Turn On / Turn Off Smoke Detector and Airflow Sensors Line by Line (Select
On- / Offline)

Each detection line is displayed one after the other with their status “ON” or “OFF”:

Line -1- ON Switch over Line ?

If yes, press button again !

By pressing the button, the current detection line is switched over from “ON” to “OFF” respectively from
“OFF” to “ON”. After displaying the last detection line the normal monitoring program is automatically
turned on.

If one or more of the detection lines are switched off, the fault relay goes into the “fault” position and the
yellow lamp turns on to indicate that one ore more detection lines are turned off and at the same time a fault
warning appears on the LCD showing the line number that has been turned off. If, for instance, detection line
no. 3 is turned off, the message states:

OFF: Line -3-

ON: Fan -1-

5.3 Display of Fault Warnings

Nearly all possible system faults of the smoke detection system SDS-48 will be indicated on the display.
Please find hereafter a description of all possible fault indications.

If not all present fault messages can be shown at the same time due to display capacity,
an additional message (“Page x”) is shown in the lower right edge of the display, “x”
being the number of the visible page. Further pages with fault messages are toggling
automatically. The “ACCEPT”- button allows for a faster access to the suppressed pages .

5.3.1 Airflow Fault

If the airflow in a detection line is too weak, the following fault warning will be issued:

FAULT: Airflow Line -x-

Possible causes:

• Pipe of detection line no. x is blocked and must be cleaned.

• 3-way-valve of detection line no. x is in position “CO2-extinguishing system”.
• Pressure switch of detection line no. x is defective.

For fault finding please proceed as follows:

• Remove the flexible hose from the appropriate detection line. If now the airflow fault indication for this
detection line disappears, the pipe of this detection line must be cleaned. Refer to section 5.3.9.
• If the fault indication is still present, open the housing in which the pressure switch of the detection line
is located. Disconnect the cable from the pressure switch at the sensor connection module in the middle
of the housing. Connect a small wire instead of the cable at the sensor connection module (short circuit).
If the airflow fault indication for this detection line disappears now, the pressure switch must be
replaced. Refer to section 5.3.1.

5.3.2 Polluted Smoke Detector

If a smoke detector is so dirty that its diagnosis value is outside the range for clean smoke detectors (less
than 5 or more than 45), the following fault warning will be issued:

FAULT: Dirt in Line -x-

To ensure proper function of the smoke detection line, the pipe of the detection line and the appropriate
smoke detector should be cleaned as soon as possible. See sections 5.3.2, 5.3.3 and 5.3.9.

22
Smoke Detection System SDS-48 safetec
5 Maintenance and Correcting Faults

5.3.3 Defective Smoke Detector

If the smoke detection panel cannot get in contact with the smoke detector in detection line no. x, the
following fault warning will be issued:

FAULT: Smoke Detector Line -x-

Possible causes:

• Smoke detector of detection line no. x is missing.

• Smoke detector of detection line no. x is defective.
• Some or all smoke detectors have the same address preset with their Xpert cards (in the socket) (compare
chapter 2.4 and the XPert- addressing data sheet in the appendix).

To correct the fault, exchange the smoke detector or reassign each detector the correct address.

5.3.4 Data Transfer Fault

If the smoke detection panel cannot get in contact with the control / repeater panel or relay box at address -x-
, the following fault warning will be issued:

FAULT: Data Transfer Address -x-

Possible causes:

• Control / repeater panel or relay box at address No. x not connected or defective.
• Control / repeater panel or relay box not set to address -x- (refer to section 6).
• RS-485-bus cable at control / repeater panel or relay box not connected properly.

In case of a repeater panel at address No. x, this repeater panel will issue following fault warning:

FAULT: Data Transfer

(Checksum Faults: xxx)

„xxx“ indicates the cumulative number of checksum faults (data transmission failures). If the number of
checksum faults „xxx“ increases rapidly, the wires of the bus-cable on terminals 19 and 20 are reversed.

If the adjusted address No. of a repeater panel is higher than the highest address No. that has been adjusted
during the system configuration, the repeater panel issues for example the following fault warning (this
warning will not be issued on other devices):

FAULT: Local address exceeds range of 4

In this example the highest permissible address No. in the system configuration is 4. Consequently the
adjusted address No. of the repeater panel is higher than 4. To settle the fault, adjust the correct address No.
at the repeater panel (refer to section 6.1).

23
Smoke Detection System SDS-48 safetec
5 Maintenance and Correcting Faults

5.3.5 Power Supply Failure

If the main power supply fails, the following fault warning will be issued:

FAULT: Main Supply

If the emergency power supply fails, the following fault warning will be issued:

FAULT: Emergency Supply

The system automatically uses the residual intact power supply and remains operable.

5.3.6 Failure of Fan Unit

If fan No.1 fails and no airflow will be generated , the smoke detection system automatically switches over
to the standby fan. The following information will be displayed:

CHECK: Fan -1-

Possible causes:
• Fuse(s) of the fan(s) is (are) blown. Fault correction: Fix the cause and replace fuse(s).
• On of the two fans is defect. Repair or replace the fan module. Compare with chapter 5.3.8 of this
manual and chapter11 of the manual DOK02.055.
• All 3-way-valves had been shut briefly and the smoke detection system assumes a failure of the fan. In
this case the information can be deleted by activating the reset function or by manually switching over
the fans.

If both fans fail, the following information will be given:

FAULT: Airflow all Lines

CHECK: Valves and Fans

Possible causes:
• Both fans are out of order. Repair or replace the fan unit.
• All 3-way-valves are shut. The fault warning disappears as soon as at least one 3-way-valve has been
opened, but not before the fault message has been acknowledged with the “ACCEPT”- button.

This information will also be given, if all 3-way-valves are closed. The condition for this information is, no
airflow on any detection line is detected.

For further information regarding the maintenance and repair of the fan unit refer to the manual DOK02.055.

5.3.7 Contrast of Display

If the contrast of the display is too weak or too strong, it can be readjusted with the contrast adjuster on the
rear side of the control module. See also the photo in section 6.2.

6 Configuration of the Smoke Detection System

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Configuration of the SDS smoke detection system is already carried out by safetec, prior to delivery.
Observe the following instructions only, if a spare part is to be configured for the system or if the
smoke detection system is to be readjusted (for example in case of ship rebuilding)

The following configurations can be carried out:

• setting the device addresses see section 6.1

• setting the highest line and device address number see section 6.2
• customer-specific setting of the fire alarm message see section 6.3

6.1 Setting the Device Addresses

The device addresses are set via the rotary switch on the control module and the relay box module. The
device addresses serve to identify the devices during data transfer on the RS-485-bus and to identify the
devices with fault warnings on the LCD. The device address “1” is reserved for the smoke detection panel.
Other device addresses must be assigned consecutively from that point on. The highest allowable device
address no. is “4”. During setting the rotary switches, the smoke detection system should be switched off.

Step Action Instructions

1 Set the address for Set the rotary switch on the control module in the smoke

repeater panels This panel is the control panel of the system. All other
repeater panels will receive subsequent numbers.
Note: The selected address will appear along with any
fault warnings from the device at the LCD, e.g. “FAULT:

the difference between the control panel and further
repeater panels see section 2.2.3.

3 Set address(es) for Set the rotary switch of the relay box or -module to the
the relay box or next available address. The highest allowable address is
-module “4”. If no control panel is used, set the rotary switch to “2”

29
Smoke Detection System SDS-48 safetec
6 Configuration of the Smoke Detection System

6.2 Setting the Highest Line and Address Number

For the purpose of self-supervision the smoke detection panel must know the highest detection line number
and the highest address number of the actual system. These values will be determined and saved in a semi-
automatic configuration mode. The configuration will normally be done prior to delivery of the smoke
detection system.

If the arrangement of the system will be changed later (for example when a repeater panel shall be added),
the configuration of the smoke detection panel must be modified. The following instruction explains how the
highest detection line number and the highest address number of the actual system values will be determined
and saved. Prior to this procedure the smoke detection system must be installed completely.

For the correct setting of the device addresses of the external devices, please refer to section 6.1.

Step Action Instructions

1 Set configuration Set the rotary switch on the control module in the smoke
mode detection panel to the value “0”.
Note: After completing the semi-automatic configuration
mode, the rotary switch must be set back to the value “1”

2 Determine the Turn the smoke detection system on or proceed a reset (see chapter
highest detection 4.8.2). The smoke detection panel will now look for the smoke
line and address detector with the highest line number and the device at the RS-485-
numbers bus with the highest address number. After a few seconds an
acoustic signal will sound and the results will be displayed, e.g.:

Scanning Lines and Addresses, detected:

Lines: 8 Addresses: 2 Save Values ?

Check whether the displayed values are correct. The above

example shows the results for an 8-line smoke detection system
with one repeater panel (the control panel).

If the results are incorrect, the smoke detection panel possibly

had not found the smoke detector with the highest line number or
the device with the highest address number. In this case check
the cable connections and the address settings at the rotary
switch. As soon as the problem is cleared, the smoke detection
panel will react again with an acoustic signal and will display the
new values.

30
Smoke Detection System SDS-48 safetec

3 Save the highest If the displayed values are correct, press the ACCEPT button. A
detection line and confirmation request will appear on the display:
address number
Are you sure to save these values ?
If yes press button again !

Press the ACCEPT button again. The ascertained values

are now permanently saved. The following note will
appear on the display:

Values are saved. Now turn rotary switch to „1“ !

4 Return to normal Now turn the rotary switch on the control module in the smoke
operating mode detection panel to “1”. The smoke detection system will now begin
with its normal operation.
After the start message “Smoke Detection System SDS-48” a
message similar to the following will appear for about 6 seconds:

System Configuration:
Lines: 8 Address: 1 of 2

After that, the smoke detection system will automatically be in

normal monitoring operation. The stored values can also be
checked later at any time with a reset of the smoke detection
system.

6.3 Customer-Specific Adaptations for Fire Alarm Display

If the smoke detection system SDS detects smoke in the air samples drawn, a fire alarm giving the line
number will appear on the display of the smoke detection panel and the repeater panel. In certain cases a
problem will arise in that the number for the monitored cargo hold will not agree with the number for the line
which is connected with the appropriate cargo hold. For instance, this is always the case when large cargo
areas must be monitored by two detection lines. In order to allow for the smoke detection system still to be
able to immediately report the location of the smoke source, the output of a fire alarm can be adapted
accordingly. For this, safetec offers two different solutions that will be explained in the following section.

FIRE: Line-3-

Example of a standard fire alarm

Using the ACCEPT button of the smoke detection system, you can call up a password-protected
configuration menu. In this configuration menu, you can set the smoke detection system so that a fire alarm
will not only show the line number, but the cargo hold number as well. The cargo hold number is originally
identical to the line number, but in the next screen you can set the cargo hold numbers individually between
1 and 99 to each line number. After you have set the cargo hold numbers for all the required lines, you then
have the option to change the password, in order to prevent any unauthorized changes in the configuration.

The configuration is carried out at the smoke detection panel. The control- and repeater panel displays will
conform automatically. Should the control module in the smoke detection panel be replaced, the
configuration will have to be performed again.

The configuration can be performed by safetec before delivery or by your own service personnel on the
already installed system without any special tools. For this, please observe the following configuration
instructions.

FIRE: Cargo Hold No.2 (Line-3-)

Example of a fire alarm giving the cargo hold number

Should these options not be adequate and you would like to realize your own texts for every fire alarm,
safetec also offers the possibility of using a separate text memory. These are plugged into already prepared
sockets in the control modules of the smoke detection panel and repeater panel. In case of a fire alarm, these
texts are then displayed automatically. For more information, please contact safetec.

6 Configuration of the Smoke Detection System

Instructions for Configuring the Fire Alarm Using the “ACCEPT” button

The configuration is performed with the help of the dialogue on the display and by use of the ACCEPT
button. During the configuration, different questions will be put to you.
You answer these questions with “yes” by pressing the button within the given time. An answer of “no” is
given by not pressing the button within the given time. If you are asked to enter a number, pressing the
button increases the current value. If the button is not pressed the current value is taken over after the given
time passes. A smaller value is entered by increasing the value to the point (up to 9 or 99) where the counter
begins back at “1” again.
A given time of about 6 seconds is available to answer each question. The amount of time left is symbolized
by little dots in the lower right corner of the display, and the end of the time is always marked with an
acoustic signal (3 short sounds).
The configuration procedure cannot be stopped halfway through. Please proceed by first writing down which
line should receive which cargo hold number before you begin with the configuration. Read the following
instructions with care and attention before you begin the configuration. You will go through the following
phases during the configuration:

• Call up “Special Functions”, run through Reset and after calling up the Reset function, press the
ACCEPT button again and hold it down until the configuration menu appears
• Enter access code
• Set the type of display for fire alarms - with or without giving cargo hold numbers
• Only for displays with cargo hold numbers: assign cargo hold numbers to line numbers
• Optional: change access code

If the results of the configuration after the first run-through are still not correct, you can of course repeat the
configuration.

Fan Unit SDS-M0440 / SDS-M0441 safetec
1 General Description

1 General Description
The fan units SDS-M0440 and SDS-M0441 are „duplicate sample extraction fans“ for „Sample Extraction Smoke
Detection Systems“ as defined in FSS-Code Chapter 10 and in RESOLUTION MSC.292(87). They are used for
drawing air samples through pipelines from cargo holds to a smoke detection panel and after passing the smoke
detection panel conveying the air samples to free air.

The fan units SDS-M0440 and SDS-M0441 are identical in construction, however SDS-M0440 shall be connected
to 220/230V 50/60Hz supplies and SDS-M0441 shall be connected to 110/115V 60Hz supplies.

The fan units are designed according EN 14986 for drawing air from hazardous areas. However they must be
installed in a safe area. For more details see below.

The fan units are compound of two fans located in a common housing, consisting of one ventilator and one
electric motor each. Only one fan is running at the time. However the fans will be switched over at regular
intervalls controlled by the smoke detection panel. If one fan fails, the smoke detection panel will switch over to
the standby fan automatically. The motors are protected by internal temperature switches, which interrupt the
motor circuits when the motor temperature has reached a certain value.

The air supply and exhaust connections are located on the upper side of the fan unit. An internal flap
automatically connects the exhaust connection to the running fan.

The enclosures of the fan units are compound of an upper and a lower part, between which a profile gasket cares
for the tightness of the enclosure. The construction of the fan units cares for a low-pressure at the profile
gasket and at both motor shaft seals while one fan is running. Thus in case of any leakage the air passes
from the safe side to the hazardous side.

The layout of the fan unit cares for a sufficient gap between rotating parts and the enclosure. If
however the enclosure of the fan unit is damaged in any way, the fan unit bears the risk of
ignition of the potentially hazardous atmosphere inside the fan unit.

The fan unit is mounted on vibration dampers.

The following fan unit versions are available:

7 Installation

7 Installation
• The environment temperature of the installation location must not exceed 45°C.
• The typical installation location is the CO2 room.
• If the fan unit shall be installed outside, it must only be mounted in a special housing with natural
ventilation (Art. No. SDS02.445 and SDS02.446). Care must be taken, that the housing is not located in
direct sun light.
• The fan unit must only be installed in horizontal position on its vibration dampers.
• Free airflow around the fan unit and at the cooling fan of the motors must not be constrained.
• The pipes which connect fan unit with smoke detection panel, extension panels and air out must be of
conductive material. The pipes must have conductive connections and must be connected to conductive
earth.
• As protection against foreign material, the connections of the fan unit must have a protection degree of
IP20 acc. EN 60529.
At the “AIR IN” connection of the fan unit, the protection is typically realized by the pipe connection to
the smoke detection panel or extension panel.
At the “AIR OUT” connection of the fan unit, the protection must be realized by other suitable means
(i.e. with a suitable check valve or a separate grid).
• In case of potential dust contamination of sucked air or in case of potential cakings at the impellers,
which result in unbalanced impellers, pre-filters must be mounted (Art.No. BG02.861).
• If dust contamination of sucked air or cakings at the impellers cannot be excluded, for example by means
of pre-filters, hoses and pipes must be of conductive material and must be earthed. Fittings must be of
conductive material and must be earthed, if the internal surface of the fitting exceeds 100cm².
Please observe TRBS 2153 (“Technische Regeln für Betriebssicherheit”) and Technical Report CLC / TR
50404.
• The vibration dampers must not be damaged.
• If pipes, hoses or fittings of non-conductive material are applied, they must only be cleaned with a wet
cloth.

8 Commissioning

8 Commissioning
• Check fan unit for any damage, specially transport damage and corrosion. Do not switch on a fan unit
with any deformation of the enclosure or with corroded parts.
• Check tightness of pipe connections between the smoke detection panel / extension panel,
the fan unit and the outlet to free air with leakage detection spray while the fan unit is
running.

Commissioning checklist:
Step No. Description OK
1 Check fan unit for any damage or corrosion. Do not switch on a fan unit with any
deformation of the enclosure and with corroded parts.

2 Check, that the environment temperature of the installation space is limited to 45°C.

3 Check, that the rubber vibration dampers are in good condition.

4 Check, that the fan unit is securely mounted on its vibration dampers in horizontal
position.

5 Check, that the fan unit is properly connected to protective earth.

6 Check, that the pipes between fan unit and smoke detection panel, extension panels
and air out are conductive and properly connected to protective earth.

7 Check, that the fan unit is protected against ingress of foreign particles (min. IP20).

8 In case of potential dust contamination of sucked air: check whether pre-filters are
mounted (Art.No. BG02.861).

9 Check tightness of pipe connections between the smoke detection panel / extension
panel, the fan unit and the outlet to free air with leakage detection spray while the
fan unit is running.

10 Check the motor bearings and the complete fan unit for irregular vibrations and
unusual running noise. For more details please refer to ISO 14694:2003.
safetec recommends to measure vibrations on a regular base with a vibration
meter (Art. No. B06.970).

9 Switch Off Fan Unit or Smoke Detection System

Before the fan unit may be switched off, the smoke detection panel, the extension panels and the fan unit must be
relieved from potentially hazardous atmosphere. This can be done by opening the doors of the
smoke detection panel and the extension panels while the fan unit is still running. The door of the
panel with the farest distance to the fan unit must be opened first, and then the panel with the
remaining farest distance and so on. Let the fan unit run for further 2 minutes after the doors have been opened.
Thus the panels and the fan unit will be filled with clean air from non hazardous atmosphere and the fan unit can
be switched off without the risque of hazardous atmosphere spreading into the installation space.

10 Maintenance

10 Maintenance
To keep the fan unit in a safe condition during its lifetime, it is of utmost importance to
examine the fan unit in regular intervals. If the fan unit is being operated under critical
conditions (i.e. suction of dust, risque of corrosion), the operator must care for carrying out
the maintenance procedure in appropriate shorter intervals.

• Check fan unit for any damage or corrosion. Stop fan unit operation if fan unit has any deformation of the
enclosure or if parts are corroded.
• If pipes, hoses or fittings of non-conductive material are applied, they must only be cleaned with a wet
cloth.
• If dust or dirt is anticipated in the air samples, the fan unit must be checked regularly for contaminations.
Additional evidence for contamination is given, if the smoke detection panel issues a “dirt” alarm. The
fan unit must be cleaned, if internal and external parts of the fan unit are covered with dirt or dust.
• The sealing between upper and lower part of the enclosure must be checked regularly for damage. If
necessary, the sealings must be exchanged. In case of exchange, only original sealings must be used. The
sealing must be replaced completely. The sealing must not be replaced partially.
• If powder coating is flaked off, repair affected area with paint to avoid corrosion.
• The running noise of the bearings must be checked regularly for irregular sounds to assure unobstructed
operation. If necessary, the motors must be exchanged. Only original motors may be used.
• The motor bearings are calculated for a life cycle of 15 years. Not later than 15 years, the motors must be
replaced. Only original motors may be used.
• Defect or unbalanced impellers must be replaced with original spare parts from the maker of the fan unit.
• Check the condition of the vibration dampers. Exchange the vibration dampers if they are damaged or
worn out.
• Check screwed connections for tightness.
• Check tightness of pipe connections between the smoke detection panel / extension panel, the fan unit and
the outlet to free air with leakage detection spray while the fan unit is running.
