The SeaGuard Ship Security Alert System
INSTALLATION SUMMARY
1. The Radome should be fitted where it has a clear view of the sky, and
is not within close proximity to any other radio equipment or RADAR
installation.
3. The Junction Box should be fitted ideally above the head lining inside
the ship, usually in the Bridge or Radio Room. For best practice, the
Junction box should not be visible.
6. The SeaGuard has four zones, and normally two switches are
connected to two of the zones. Two zones are spare.
7. The Switches supplied are normally open. The SeaGuard Junction box
is supplied with all wire links and zones set for normally closed
switches.
V3.3 15/05/2006
8. The Switches supplied have an end of line resistor (4K7 Ohms) fitted.
This resistor must not be removed.
9. Unused zones on the interface board are fitted with wire link. This link
must not be removed unless Security Alert switches are fitted. Please
see fitting instructions for additional switch options.
10. An installers test switch is fitted in the junction box, which when
activated disables the transmission of Security alerts. The SeaGuard is
supplied with the installers switch in the test position, and this switch
must be turned to operational mode AT THE END OF ALL TESTING.
11. There is no on/off activation switch for the SeaGuard. The SeaGuard
activates itself as soon as ships power is connected for the first time.
PLEASE NOTE ONCE ACTIVATED THE SEAGUARD CANNOT BE
TURNED OFF OR RESET.
1. Each of the four zones can accept either normally open or normally
closed switches.
3. The Zone switches must be set correctly inside the Junction box.
4. If more than four switches are required please refer to the wiring
diagrams for switch options.
5. Please note you cannot mix normally open and normally closed
switches in one zone. All switches within a zone must be either
normally open or normally closed.
6. If normally open switches are used a 4K7 ohm end of line resistor
(Supplied) must be fitted across the switch terminals.
8. If a key operated test switch is required this must be connected via the
junction box, please refer to the relevant section for the installation,
testing and operation of a test switch.

Installation Procedure Overview
1 Fit the Radome on the upper surface of the vessel where it has an
unobstructed view of the sky and is at least 1.5 metres away from
any other transmission equipment.
4 The Junction Box is best fitted above the head lining on the Bridge
and preferably near a Ship’s Power outlet (240 volts AC).
5 Fit one Security alert switch on the bridge and using the cable
supplied lead the cable back to the Junction box.
7 Terminate the Ship’s power cable, the two security switch cables
and the Antenna cable as shown in these instructions. DO NOT
SWITCH ON THE SHIP’S POWER TO THE JUNCTION BOX,
UNTIL ALL CONNECTIONS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED.

General Installation Procedure
2. The SeaGuard units are activated by connection to the ships power supply
(240V AC or 24 Volts DC)
5. Connecting the SeaGuard back to ship’s power supply will clear this Mode
and the SeaGuard will continue its normal operation.

Installing the Security Alert Switches
Overview
The security Alert switches are activated by pressing the switch button for
more than one second. When activated, the SeaGuard will be in Security
Alert mode and transmit a Security Alert message including the ship’s name,
position, course and speed every fifteen minutes.
Two Switches are provided with the installation. Additional switches can be
provided
Switches can be connected one per zone or “Daisy Chained” onto one zone,
to extend the switch distance from the Junction box
Normally open switches are the most commonly available and require a
specific “End of line” resistor of 4k7 OHMS to be fitted. This monitors the alert
switch cables continuity and integrity.
A cut line causes the SeaGuard to transmit a fault, and is also indicated
within the junction box.
Normally closed switches are not standard, but require no end of line
resistor.
A cut line initiates the SeaGuard security alert and also indicates as an
alert in the junction box.

Security Alert Switch configurations
Configuration A
Use this configuration for normally open switches when the switches are
positioned radially from the junction box. An end of line resistor (4K7
Ohms) is required for each switch in each zone.
Configuration B
Use this configuration when Normally open switches are in a straight run
or spur from the junction box, or when a single switch requires an
extension switch fitted.
An end of line resistor (4K7 Ohms) must be fitted to the last switch in each
zone.
Configuration C
Use this configuration for Normally Closed switches when the switches are
positioned radially from the junction box.
Configuration D

Installing the Junction box and Interface Board
3 The Junction box also provides an Installers set-up function and led
display, and an integral Power Supply. The Power Supply converts
the incoming ship supply to a safe low voltage DC feed to the
Radome.

Initialising SeaGuard
2. The green set-up LED and the Red " Supply OK" LED will illuminate.
3. Check the red alarm LEDs and the Yellow fault LEDs are not lit.
4. If any red or Yellow LEDs are lit then check the wiring to the
appropriate security alert switch, terminations, and that the Zone
switch are correctly set.
5. Check that either an end of line resistor or a link is fitted to all unused
zones and that the Zone switches are set correctly.

Wire link switch set to “NC”
6. Reconnect the ship’s power supply and check the voltage on pins 1
and 2
7. To the antenna cable Red (+ 15 volts) and black (0 Volts). The voltage
should be 15 volts

Second alarm test
2. Initiate a security alert by pressing the Security alert switch for more
than one second
3. Check the Alert Red LED for the zone being tested illuminates.
4. Check that the Red alarm active LED starts flashing a second later.
5. Wait until the Red alarm active LED stops flashing after 30 seconds
7. VERY IMPORTANT
8. After completing all tests, move the Installers Set-up switch to “OFF”
Key switch is used for testing the SeaGuard alarm systems and its
connections to the satellite and delivery of messages.
While in test mode the SeaGuard will transmit a test message only.
Security Alerts will not be transmitted during a Test.

Live Testing:
3. Live testing should only be carried out for exceptional reasons as too
many live tests may jeopardise an immediate response to a genuine
security alert.
4. Live Testing can only be carried out with the prior permission of
MarineTrack and during NORMAL U.K. office hours ( +/- 3 hours
Midday GMT)
8. MarineTrack will confirm the result of the test to the Company Security
Officer.

Maintenance of the SeaGuard
Maintenance:
The internal battery pack has expected lifetime of about 4 years, but this is
can vary dependent on operating conditions.
MarineTrack recommends changing the battery every two years ideally during
the Ship’s radio survey.

If the vessel is entering Dry Dock or powering down for an extended period of
more than 3 days then the following power down procedure must be used to
protect the standby battery inside the SeaGuard.
Failure to power down according to these instructions will cause the internal
battery to run flat and will damage the internal battery. In these circumstances
the battery should be replaced before powering the ship up.
Please note MarineTrack recommend replacing the internal battery every two
years. This can be done by any MarineTrack service agent.
