3) IP STP, constructing 3G and IP signaling networks
4) Signaling System No.7
5) SS7 over IP

I. SG7000-030101

Function: STP, constructing signaling network

Description:
Signaling transfer point (STP) is a device to transfer signaling from one signaling point (SP) to
another. In PSTN, the SG7000 is capable of processing and transferring signaling, featuring the
functions of a traditional narrowband STP.
Currently, China constructs No.7 signaling network in three hierarchies, namely, HSTP, LSTP, and
SP hierarchies. The SG7000 can be used as the HSTP and the LSTP, providing 14-bit and 24-bit
signaling point codes (SPCs).
See section 1.1 II. SG7000-010201 and 1.1 III. SG7000-010301 for detailed indexes.

II. SG7000-030201

Function: SG, constructing NGN

Description:
The SG7000 has complete SIGTRAN and SS7 protocols, implementing interworking between
broadband signaling and narrowband signaling.
The SG7000 interconnects with the softswith and other IP-based database devices (such as the
IP-HLR, IP-SCP, and IP-SMSC) in distributed gateway model to handle the interworking of the
SS7 between traditional PSTN/PLMN and NGN.
The SG7000 uses E1 interfaces and standard SS7 protocol to connect with the equipment of
PSTN/PLMN, and uses IP interfaces and standard SIGTRAN protocol to connect the equipment
of NGN, thus implementing the bearer of SS7 over IP.
See section 1.1 II. SG7000-010201 and 1.1 III. SG7000-010301 for detailed indexes.

III. SG7000-030301

Function: IP STP, constructing 3G and IP signaling networks

Description:
Along with the development of the NGN and CDMA network, IP-based SIGTRAN protocol
comes into being. The SIGTRAN protocol is a protocol stack used in IP networks to transmit
signaling and protocols of the circuit switching network (CSN). The standard primitive interface
supported by the SIGTRAN protocol does not change the existing CSN signaling, thus ensuring
the CSN signaling can be directly used without being modified.
Signaling at the bottom layer is transmitted through standard IP protocol. The SIGTRAN protocol
is used to implement IP-based signaling transmission and construct IP-based signaling network.

IV. SG7000-030401

Function: Signaling System No.7

Description:
SG70000 have implemented Message Transfer Part (MTP1/2/3), signaling connection control part
(SCCP), Transaction capability application part (TCAP), Operations, maintenance and
administration part (OMAP) of Signaling System No.7.
Implementation Distribution of MTP Functions
The first functional level of SG7000 MTP(MTP1) is on SEPU board, with functions
implemented by hardware. SEPU provides E1/T1 interfaces.
The second functional level of SG7000 MTP(MTP2) is on SBPU board, with functions
implemented by hardware and software jointly. Each of the SBPU board provides 32 NSL(Normal
Speed Link ) or 4 HSL(High Speed Link). The signal unit delimiting and alignment, error testing
are implemented by hardware. SBPU board can preprocess the signal units sent by the second
functional level of MTP by setting micro-code control, so as to realize error monitoring, filter
FISUs, and decrease the load of the main processor. The main processor implements such
functions as message transfer, link status control, error correction, initial alignment start and flow
control.
The third functional level of SG7000 MTP(MTP3) is on SBPU board and the HSYS board,
implementing such message processing functions as message allocation, message authentication
and message routing in addition to the signaling network management functions.
Implementation Distribution of SCCP/TCAP/OMAP Functions
SCCP/TCAP/OMAP functions are mainly distributed on the HSYS board and SBPU board
SCCP, As part of the UP, the signaling connection control part (SCCP) belongs to the fourth
function level in the SS7. It provides additional functions to the MTP to transmit the circuit related
and non-circuit related information and other information between the exchange offices of telecom
network and specialized centers over the SS7 network. Thus the connectionless and connection
oriented network services are created. . It forms the third layer (network layer) of the OSI layered
model.
TCAP, Transaction capability means providing communication capability between various
applications and network services. It provides functions and regulations independent of the
specific applications for exchanges and special service centers spread in the network in a large
number. TCAP uses the addressing mode supported by SCCP and based on connection oriented
and connectionless services of SCCP. The TCAP process is divided into component sub-layer
process and transaction sub-layer process.
OMAP, Monitoring and measurements for the SS7 are finished by a separate software module in
an SG7000, and realized with single monitoring item as the drive, and monitoring classification
such as permanent, semi-permanent and activated as the course. In an other word, the monitoring
processing course is unrelated to specific items. In this way, the system can add or reduce the
monitoring item flexibly, to make the monitoring system less complex and more accurate.
Management Function of SS7, As a terminal user of SS7, the management functional module is on
its top layer, checking data of SS7 by using SS7 regulations. Meanwhile, during the check, using
of the data by the network itself is also checked.

II. SG7000-040201

Function: MTP Load Sharing

2009-9-15 HUAWEI CONFIDENTIAL Page 9 of 37
SG7000V200R005 Function Description Secret

Description:
SG7000’s Basic MTP Load Sharing
There are route and link selection fields (4-bit values, generally called SLS mask) respectively in
the destination signaling point table and the link set table of SG7000. If bit n of the SLS mask (0 ≤
n ≤ 4) is 1, then the 16 SLS values can be divided into 2n groups. For selecting a route in a route
set and a link in a link set, SG7000 adopts the similar algorithm.
Load sharing in MTP3 extension is: routing for ISUP messages and TUP messages is no longer
done according to the SLS, but according to the middle or higher four bits of the CIC (TUP, ISUP
message). However, the links are selected according to the SLS. In this way, the rule for selecting
the route is different from that for selecting the link, and the load can be shared more evenly.
Load sharing among multiple signaling points: When the multiple signaling point mode is adopted,
the SG7000 can share the load among the outgoing link sets by dividing the incoming link sets
into different groups. In this way, the load in a certain office direction can be evenly shared among
different link sets. Furthermore, this algorithm can adjust the group data according to the service
changes in different office directions, so as to share the load evenly.
MTP dummy SLS load share: SG7000 selects routes according to the actual SLS of the messages,
but selects links according to the dummy SLS producing by the lower 4 bit of message’s OPC and
actual SLS, so different OPC may make the messages with the same actual SLS transmit by
different links and make the load be shared evenly.

III. SG7000-040301

Function: SCCP Load Sharing

Description:
Support SCCP flexible Load Sharing or Active/Standby among 16 DPCs / DPC_SSNs:
z 16 DPCs / DPC_SSNs have priority attribute;
z Among DPCs / DPC_SSNs with the same priority, adopt Load Sharing
z Among DPCs / DPC_SSNs with the difference priority, adopt Active/Standby
For the services of class 0 with no sequence requirement, SCCP will set the SLS values of
messages as needed, generally to make the SLS values distribute evenly for each destination
signaling point.
For the services of classes 1 with sequence requirement, SG7000 could execute load sharing
according to the following parameters: (including the services of classes 0):
z Signaling link selection code
z Input Signaling linkSet code
z OPC
z Calling GT

Test connection is also called monitoring signaling connection. Monitoring signaling connection is
divided into forward monitoring and backward monitoring. Forward monitoring monitors
accessed signaling and backward monitoring monitors the processed signaling. The monitoring
can be implemented across the slots. If the monitoring party and the monitored party are not in the
same slot, the signaling is monitored across the slots.

IX. SG7000-040901

Function: OMAP-MRVT- MTP route verification test

Description:
MRVT mainly aims to confirm whether data in the route table are consistent. It is fulfilled through
the distribution of the test message. It transfers the test messages along all the routes that can reach
the test destination and registers the past STP identification codes. The whole test concerns:
z Whether there is cyclic loop in MTP.
z Whether the route is ultra long.
z Whether the destination place can be identified.
z Bi-directionality of the signaling relation.

X. SG7000-041001

Function: OMAP-SRVT SCCP route verification test

Description:
SRVT is a way to test SCCP global title translation service. The test aims to verify whether the
global title translation data is accurate, integrate and compatible at the global title translation
service points. The whole test concerns:
z Parallel SCCP route points (standby translation signaling points).
z Serial SCCP route points (multiple translation signaling points).
z Multiple destination points consistent with the global title under test.
z Whether there is cyclic loop in SCCP route.
z Whether the destination place can be identified.

XI. SG7000-041101

Function: Traffic Congestion Control Function (link monitoring)

Description:
SG7000 performs link monitoring function on every link. The traffic load is measured all the time.
In case of overload in SPs, SG7000 provides a signaling protocol based solution. All links in the
system operate with 5 levels of congestion. The congestion level ‘0’ means no congestion. The
other four congestion levels are all configurable. When the traffic is above a congestion level,
SG7000 will send TFC with a congestion status to the origination point code after receiving 8
signaling messages from the origination point code. When the origination point code received
TFC, it will control signaling traffic to the STP. There are 5 debate levels correspondingly. When
the traffic falls below the debate level, SG7000 will stop sending TFC with that level status. A

discard level is used as threshold to discard messages. All these parameters can be configured in
SG7000.

XII. SG7000-041201

Function: 2M High Speed Signaling Link Function

Description:

In the SS7 signaling network, a large number of 64Kbit/s signaling links conforming to ITU-T Q
specifications are used. With the growing traffic flow over the signaling network, new
technologies are required to solve the problem of 64Kbit/s signaling link transmission bandwidth.
ITU-T Q.703 2Mbit/s and ATM 2Mbit/s high speed signaling link are a major technology used to
solve this problem.
ITU-T Q.703 2Mbit/s high speed signaling link technology evolves from ITU-T Q.703 and ITU-T
Q.704 protocols. The equipment adopting this technology can be used to connect to the remote
signaling equipment as an integral signaling link, representing all time slots or part of continuous
time slots (N X 64K) of an E1 interface.
ATM 2Mbit/s high speed signaling link is another method of realizing high speed signaling link
technology. It is a signaling link realized by using the ATM technology over the
quasi-synchronization network. From a stack protocol viewpoint, ATM 2Mbit/s high speed
signaling link replaces signaling links MTP1 and MTP2 based on a set of ATM protocols (ITU-T
Q.2110, ITU-T Q.2140 and ITU-T Q.2144) with those based on ITU-T Q.703 protocol, as shown
in the following figure.
Signaling links are point-to-point connections. So the ATM connections required by ATM 2Mbit/s
high speed signaling links are also point-to-point connections and there is no ATM switching
equipment in between, which is only used in bearing the SSCOP protocol.
Since signaling messages are packaged into ATM cells that have fixed lengths (53 bytes) and are
transmitted over the E1. The length of signaling messages directly affects the usage of the link
transmission bandwidth. This is a technological restriction of ATM 2Mbit/s high speed signaling
link.

Function: MTP & SCCP Loop Detected

Description:
Loop detected is a kind of service to detect that messages route ceaselessly between two signaling
net units and make the high link load to affect other traffic because of mistake route data or SCCP
data. The procedures of the service are as follows:
MTP Loop Detected:
SG7000 compares the outgoing linkset with the incoming linkset of a message
If they are the same linkset, SG7000 will throw the message and give an alarm
SCCP Loop Detected:
Received message will do GTT with GT+DPC result
SG7000 compares final DPC with incoming OPC of message
If they are the same SPC, SG7000 will throw the message and give an alarm

XIV. SG7000-041401

Function: BICC transfer function

Description:
SG7000 can transfer BICC message if the BICC message is based on M3UA protocol or M2PA
protocol. In 3GPP R4 structure, MSS will use BICC message instead of ISUP message to build
voice calls, if the BICC message is based on M3UA protocol, it can be transferred by SG7000. In
addition if SG7000 are connected to each other by M2PA links, the BICC message can be
transferred between SG7000.

Function: Signaling Screen

Description:
The interconnection between different telecom operators’ signaling networks facilitates the
cooperation between them. However, some operators may snatch profit by sending illegal
signaling messages. To prevent such events, firewall is used.
The function of firewall is to detect and intercept the illegal packets and ensure the legal ones be
transmitted normally.SG7000 provides the signaling firewall function, which masks the illegal
signaling messages through specific signaling devices. This function can mask the messages of
specified signaling points or of a specific type, thus ensure the security and reliability of the
signaling network.
At most, 10K screening rules is supported.
SG7000 can realize the protocol on the layer of MTP, SCCP, MAP. Every protocol layer could be
screened according to the following parameters:
- On the MTP layer the message could be screened according to the following parameters:
OPC, DPC, SIO, H0H1, TFM, and combination of OPC+DPC+SI
- On the SCCP layer the message could be screened according to the following parameters:
Message Type (UDT/UDTS/XUDT/XUDTS), Calling/ Called GT, SSN, Calling/ Called GT
Translation Type (GT Translation Type: DPC+GT, DPC+SSN, DPC+ new GT and DPC)
- On the MAP layer the message could be screened according to the following parameters: MAP
operation code: MO/TON/NPI/OA or MAP operation code: MT/OA/IMSI
SG7000 supports to record the detail information of screened messages.

II. SG7000-050201

Function: IUA convergence

Description:
In NGN, because the capacities of the access devices (IAD and AG) are small and the amount of
these devices is huge, when they access to the SoftX3000 through the IP network, it is hard for the
SoftX3000 to manage and handle all the links of them. In this case, SG7000 can be used to
converge the links and then transfer them to the SoftX3000.
Performance: The performance of each SBPU connected to the IAD is 1000 packets per second.
The performance of each SBPU connected to the softswitch is 3500 packets per second.
Capacity: Each SBPU connected to the IAD supports at most 1250 IUA links.

SG7000V200R005 Function Description Secret

Each SBPU connected to the softswitch supports at most 8 IUA links.

III. SG7000-050301

Function: MNP (mobile number portability)

Description:
To balance the competitiveness between mobile network operators, the governments of some
countries require the service providers to provide the NP service between mobile networks. With
the MNP service, subscribers can change their network operators without changing their
MSISDNs. The newly subscribed network operator will allocate a new IMSI (contained in the
SIM card) to the NP subscriber.
SG7000 support the following MNP Scenarios:
1. GSM subscribers ported in other GSM network, vice versa
2. CDMA subscribers ported in the GSM network, vice versa
3. GSM subscribers ported in the 3G network, vice versa
The SG7000 implements the MNP service based on the signaling relay function (SRF) of the
following standards:
3GPP Specifications:
3GPP 22.066: Support of Mobile Number Portability (MNP); Service description.
3GPP 23.066: Support of Mobile Number Portability (MNP); Technical realization.
ETSI GSM Specifications:
GSM 02.66: Support of Mobile Number Portability (MNP); Service description.
GSM 03.66: Support of Mobile Number Portability (MNP); Technical realization.
Implementation of the SRF service: The SG7000 is logically located before the HLR to intercept
the SRI message sent by the MSC to obtain the called MSISDN. After that, the SG7000 queries
the NP database:
z If the callee is in the local network (originally a local network user or a user
ported in from another network), the SG7000 sends the SRI message to the
homed HLR.
z If the callee is in a non-local network (originally a non-local network user or a
user ported out from the local network), the SG7000 returns an SRI_ACK
message to the MSC. The MSRN in the message is filled with
"RN+MSISDN" which is used by the MSC to connect the call to the correct
network. RN stands for routing number. After the MNP service is enabled,
each network operator is allocated with at lest one RN which is used for
addressing.
For the MNP service of pre-paid users, the SG7000 provides two solutions:
z The SG7000 provides the ATI query mode to implement the MNP service.
The IN network obtains the user NP information from the SG7000-NPDB
through the ATI query interface and then performs relevant processing
(mainly distinguishes the tariff rate) based on the user NP status. After the
processing, the IN network provides the MNP service for the pre-paid users.

SG7000V200R005 Function Description Secret

z The SG7000 intercepts the IDP message of the SCP and queries the NPDB
based on the called number. Then the SG7000 adds the RN to the front of
the called number and routes the IDP message to the SCP. The SCP obtains
the user NP information based on the called prefix in the IDP message and
then performs relevant processing (mainly distinguishes the tariff rate). After
the processing, the SCP provides the MNP service for the pre-paid users.
For details of the MNP service implementation, see Technical White Paper for MNP Service.

IV. SG7000-050401

Function: FNR (Flexible Number Routing)

Description:
In the mobile network, the user data is allocated to the HLR based on the MSISDN segment or
IMSI number segment. In this case, the MSC obtains the homed HLR address based on the
MSISDN segment or IMSI number segment. With the FNR service, network operators can
flexibly allocate MSISDN and IMSI numbers regardless of the HLR address and number ranges.
This makes the numbers fully used and reduces the number waste. In addition, network operators
can easily allocate number regardless of number mapping relations.
Based on 3GPP TS23.066 standard, the SG7000 adopts the signaling relay function (SRF) scheme
to implement the FNR service. The SG7000 is logically allocated before the HLR. All SCCP
query messages are routed to the SG7000 (SRF). The SG7000 (SRF) analyzes the called MSISDN
or IMSI number in the SCCP message and then queries the database to obtain the address of the
HLR in which this called number is stored. Then the SG7000 modifies the called number in the
SCCP message to the HLR address. Thus, the message is routed to the correct HLR.
For details of the FNR service implementation, see Technical White Paper for FNR Service.
