Reading Comprehension

I – Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
a. Identify the different literary elements in the story
b. Draw the plot of the story, “The Necklace”
II – Subject Matter
Lesson : Understanding Literary Elements
Content : Basic textual and contextual reading approach in the study and appreciation of
literature
Content Standard : The learner will be able to understand and appreciate literary texts in
various genres across national literature and cultures.
Performance Standard: Critical paper that analyzes literary texts in relation to the context of the
reader and the writer or a critical paper that interprets literary
texts using any of the critical approaches.
Learning Competency : Explain the texts in terms of literary elements, genres, and
traditions (Code:EN12Lit-IIb-32)
Materials : Slide Deck, Projector, Laptop, Cartolina, and Marker

III – Activities
Motivation: (3mins)
1. A picture of a necklace will be presented to the students.
2. The teacher will ask some questions regarding the picture presented.
a. What can you say in the picture?
b. Describe what you see in the picture
c. If you have this kind of possession in life, what would you do to keep it with you
forever?
Expected answers

Activity 1: (12mins)
1. The teacher will play a video entitled “The Necklace”.
2. The teacher will instruct the students to read along with the characters in the story.
3. The teacher will ask some comprehension questions regarding what they have read.
a. How do you describe the main character Mathilde?
b. Which character in the story is most self-sacrificial than anybody else?
c. In the story “The Necklace”, Mathilde spent her lifetime daydreaming. Is
daydreaming harmful or harmless? Why?
d. How does the necklace change the way Madame Loisel perceives herself in the story
“The Necklace”?
e. If you are to end the story, what would it be?

1. The students will be given 5 minutes to brainstorm and draw the plot of the story.
2. The class will be divided into five.
3. Each group will be given a 1 cartolina and 1 marker
4. Use only 1 sentence in every part of the plot.
