ANALYSIS OF MULTI-STORY

BUILDING USING SELF

BITS Pilani
DEVELOPED SOFTWARE
Pilani Campus
AIM OF THE PROJECT
• To develop a computer program using the concepts of Stiffness
method of structural analysis.
• To analyse a 5-story building using the software developed to
obtain all forces and displacements
• To check the chances of failure of every member using any
failure criteria.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE SOFTWARE
• Background Softwares
* MATLAB 2016 – For executing the algorithm of the
problem
* Microsoft EXCEL – Inputting data for the program.
• Application of the Software Developed
* The program can be used to analyse any 2-D frame section
* Calculates all Displacements, Reactions, Member forces
in double precision (up to 16 digit precision)
* Checks the safety of every member against failure using
interaction failure theory.

ANALYSIS OF THE STRUCTURE
METHODOLOGY

BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus

ANALYSIS OF THE STRUCTURE
RESULTS ANALYSIS
• Displacement corresponding to every degree of freedom is
obtained . According to IS 1893-2002, maximum displacement
at the top story of a bulding should not exceed 0.004xh
h- total height of the building
In our case, this value is 78mm and every every displacement
is within the limit.
• The member forces and reactions for every member is
obtained and every member is checked for failure using
interaction failure theory.

BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus

ANALYSIS OF THE STRUCTURE
RESULTS ANALYSIS
• Interaction Failure Theory
𝑃 𝑀 𝑉
For a member to safe against failure: + + ≤1
Pu Mu Vu
Where, Pu = Ultimate load carrying capacity of member
Mu=Ultimate bending carrying capacity of section
Vu=Shear capacity of section
P =Compressive load on member
M=Bending moment on member
• Applying this theory, the members were checked for failure.

ANALYSIS OF THE STRUCTURE
RESULTS ANALYSIS

• Out of 34 members along shorter direction in outer frame , 11

members failed.
• Out of 65 members along longer direction in intermediate
frame, 23 members failed.
• Out of 65 members along longer direction in outer frame, 27
members failed.
