Online Activity: LOWER Extremity Orthotic Examination
Examination is an essential element of orthotic management. The physical therapist should be certain that
the orthosis fits and functions properly before attempting to train the patient to use it. Analysis may be
conducted under the aegis of a formal orthotic clinic team. If so, when the orthosis is delivered, the team
should determine the adequacy of the orthosis as pass, provisional pass, or fail. Pass indicates that the
orthosis is altogether satisfactory and the patient is ready for training. Provisional pass means that minor
faults exist, generally having to do with the cosmetic finishing of the appliance; the patient can wear the
orthosis in the training program without harmful effect. Failure signifies that the orthosis has a major defect
that would interfere with training; for example, shoes that are too tight for the patient. The problem must be
resolved before training can begin. If the orthosis is not prescribed by a clinic team, the physical therapist
should use the evaluation procedure to ensure that the orthosis meets the patient’s needs.
