A transformer is an electrical device that is used to change the voltage in alternating current

(AC) electrical circuits. The ability of this device to change voltage is a major advantage of AC
electricity over direct current (DC).

A simple transformer consists of a dual electromagnet, where there are two sets of wires
wrapped around it for the input and output voltages. The electromagnet may be in the form of a
straight iron rod, horseshoe, or donut shaped. The output voltage is a function of the input
voltage and the ratio of the number of turns of the wire.

Uses for transformers are to decrease the line voltage to house voltage and the change the voltage
for small devices.

A simple AC transformer is basically a dual electromagnet with two sets of wires wound around
it for the input and output voltages.

The input AC voltage goes through the primary coil, making the soft iron core and AC
electromagnet. Soft iron is used because the direction of magnetism can change rapidly with the
change in direction of the current. The strength of the magnetic field is a function of the number
of turns of the primary coil.

The changing magnetic field activates the secondary coil on the electromagnet, creating an
output voltage that is a function of the number of coils.

Uses for transformers

Transformers are used to lower voltage to be safer to use in your house. You may also use an
adapter to lower the voltage even more for some devices you use. DC transformers are now
available, but they won't replace AC transformers.

Normally, the voltage from the electrical lines coming to your house is around 1100V AC. The
reason it is so high is that the electricity travels more effectively over long distances at higher
voltages. High voltage lines carry up to 10,000 volts.

The transformer near to top of the electrical pole reduces the voltage to a safer 220V AC or 110V
AC for the appliances in your house.

Adapters

An adapter is a small device that not only reduces 110V AC to a lower voltage, but it also
changes AC to DC. Most people use adapters when they power devices that also use batteries.
The adapter changes the 110V AC house current to 12V DC or 9V DC that is used by the
devices that employ batteries.

Changing AC to DC is done by electronic circuitry called a rectifier. It essentially chops off 1/2
of the AC current to make it similar to DC. Some of the lost AC current is turned into heat. That
is one reason your adapters sometimes get warm.
Summary
An AC transformer is an electrical device that is used to change the voltage in alternating current
(AC) electrical circuits. A simple transformer consists of a dual electromagnet, where there are
two sets of wires wrapped around it for the input and output voltages.

The output voltage of a transformer is according to the formula: Vo = Vi(No/Ni). Uses for
transformers include decreasing the line voltage to house voltage and the changing the voltage
for small devices.

Ethernet

When POE was being developed two different methods of adding the power were proposed. One
was to utilize the unused wires in a cat 5 cable. Most early implementation prior to the standard
used the normally unused wires. There was little standard of the voltage, or current. Some
systems did try to use AC power but found there was considerable interference. In many early
installations the “un-used” wires were not present.

To get around the problem of the other wires not being present the other method developed was
to impose the power on the wires used to transmit the data signal.

The signaling used in Ethernet is an AC signal. For a variety of reasons, when Ethernet was
originally developed the signal was coupled via transformers between the transmission media
and the transceivers. Since transformers pass AC and block DC the developers of POE used this
to separate the power from the signal. This would not be possible if the power was AC.

The current standard requires a POE compliant device to accept power from either source, thus
the requirement that the power be DC.

Cellphone

Obviously DC, as current is not requried to charge Smartphone, it is used to charge the Battery
present in Smartphone and according to Basics of Battery it always stores Dc into it.

and another thing the Circuit of Smartphones always works on DC and not on Ac.

So due to this we uses Charger which includes in it the rectifier Circuit along with StepDown
Transformer to get the output at 5V DC and some mAh

The type of current that charges smartphone is a direct current (DC).

Our smartphones is been powered by combination of cells called battery, its works by electrons
flowing in one direction only and batteries produce direct current.

Where alternating current (AC) comes in is to generate input supply to the charger thus then
rectify it to a small amount of voltage in direct current providing it to power our smartphones.
Our smartphone is having battery for storage and supply of electrical energy.
supply we have available at home is Alternating i.e. AC. Batteries require DC supply to get
charged. so the chargers of smartphone contain rectifier and inverter assembly to charge the
same .

-AC converted to DC through Rectifier

-Filter removes repulse in the same.

Charging stops automatically when certain voltage is reached, governed by zener diode.

It’s DC, All the gadgets like laptop, Phone, Trimmer comes under these categories. The charger
we plug into the socket are like acts as a rectifier. It has a 230 AC to 20 AC transformer, full
wave rectifier and a regulator.(Here I used 20 Volts as step down voltage, I referred a laptop
charger, these voltage changes according to which device u are charging)
