Power Supply

Definition of Power Supply

Power supply is an electronic device that supplies electric power to another
electronics devices. Power supply receives power from an electrical outlet or voltage
source from PLN, and converts the current from AC (alternating current) to DC (direct
current). In general, power supply has many function to support our daily activities. For
example: Power supply used as voltage source to turn on the lamp, fan, television,
laptop, radio, etc.
Power supply is the most important part in almost all electronics device, because
the power supply is a hardware device that serves voltage supply to another electronic
components. If the power supply doesnt exist in electronics devices, thats mean the
electronic device also cant be used. Because the electronic devices do not get supply
voltage from the power supply.
Types of Power Supply
In general, there are two kinds of power supply, namely: AC Power Supply and DC
Power Supply. And now I will tell you about it one by one.
1. AC Power Supply
The symbol of AC power supply is a circle with sine wave in center and has
two terminals. The example of AC power supply is power from an electrical outlet
(in Indonesia called PLN). The standard voltages are applied in Indonesia for
alternating electric one phase is 220 V, while for alternating current three phase is
380 V, with frequency of 50 Hz / 60 Hz.
The AC power supply usually used to turn on the lamp, fan, air conditioner,
etc. In general, an AC voltage source can be found in Electric current from PLN,
Generator (Genset), and Wind Turbine.
2. DC Power Supply
The symbol of DC power supply is circle that has two terminals, namely
positive pole and negative pole. The DC power supply usually used to turn on the
television, radio, dvd player, etc. There are many types of DC power supply, namely
battery and regulator power supply.
a. Battery
Baterry is a device that converts stored chemical energy to electrical
energy. Baterry usually used to turn on the smartphone, laptop, TV remote, etc.
Batteries are commonly used as energy sources in many household and
industrial applications. A battery has polarity, positive pole and negative pole.

So before use battery for electronic device, we must check the polarity of
battery and attach the battery correctly.
There are two types of batteries, namely: Primary batteries (disposable
batteries), which are designed to be used once and discarded. Secondary
batteries (rechargeable batteries), which are designed to be recharged and used
multiple times.
b. Regulator Power Supply
Regulator power supply is electronic instrument that can supply the power
as we want. This types of power supply can change AC (alternating current)
voltage to DC (direct current) voltage. This power supply uses some electronic
component to control the output voltage of power supply.
There are many parts that used in regulator power supply circuit, such as:
Transformer as a lowering voltage, Diode as a rectifier, Capacitor as a filter, and
IC Regulator as a voltage stabilizer.
Working Principle of Power Supply

Working Principle of Power Supply

In general, the working principle of a power supply can be described as follows:
1. Input Voltage
Input voltage is the part that is known as the stop contacts, the connector outlet
is an AC voltage source of electricity that is used to distribute voltage on the input
voltage via a cable adapter. The input voltage consists of jack, plug, and cable input.
2. Lowering Voltage
Lowering voltage is the part that serves to lowering the voltage from 220 volts
AC into a lower voltage, for example 3 volts, 6 volts, 9 volts or 12 volts. In this part
used a type of step-down transformer as the main component.
3. Rectifier
Rectifier is the part that can convert AC voltage into DC voltage. The main
components used are diodes. Diodes are used as much as 4 pieces and assembled to
form a diode bridge, so as to generate a DC voltage (-) and (+).
4. Filter and Voltage Stabilizer

Filter is the part that serves to eliminate the AC voltage that is still contained in
the DC voltage. The effect of passing this AC voltage is a wave of noise. The
components needed to make this filter part are capacitor and IC voltage stabilizer.
5. Output Voltage
Output voltage is the part that serves as the output voltage in the form of a DC
voltage. The magnitude of this DC voltage output according to the output voltage of
the step-down transformer and another components used settings.
Applications of Power Supply

Power supply used as Handphone Adapter

Power supply used as Laptop Adapter

In general, power supply has many function to support our daily activities. For
example: Power supply used as voltage source to turn on the lamp, fan, television,
laptop, radio, etc. And now, I will tell you about one of the application of power supply
that usually used for charging battery that called Adapter.
Adapter or power supply is an electronic circuit that serves to convert alternating
current into direct current. Adapter has four main parts in order to produce a stable DC
current. The fourth part of them is Transformer, Rectifier, Filter and Voltage Regulator.

Adapter is an electronic circuit that works by converting a high AC voltage into

low DC voltage. Adaptor is an electronic device that has function to charge the energy in
battery, or we can called as a battery charger. The device that usually charge by adaptor
like a laptop or handphone.
