MD – TVD - TVDss

Simply in non deviated well (vertical well), Measured Depth (MD) is True Vertical Depth
(TVD) + Elevation (Kelly Bushing). MD is measured and started from KB/GF/DF. TVDSS in
non deviated well will be exactly the same values as TVD but just in negative signs (-).

MD below well elev = TVD below datum + KB

MD below well elev = TVD below well elev.

TVDSS = (-) TVD below datum.

TVDSS = – (MD below well elev - KB).

Log Measurement Terminology

It is important to understand several log measurements to accurately convert log depths to

depths used in subsurface maps (fig.AA: diagram showing log measurement terminology).
Shown below is a list of log measurements, their abbreviations, and definitions of depth
terminology.
KB = Distance from Kellybushing to sea level
MD = Measured Depth = i.e. measured distance along the path of a wellbore from KB to TD
(total depth of the well) or any correlation point in between.
TVD = True Vertical Depth = Vertical distance from the KB to any point in the subsurface.
TVDSS = True Vertical Depth Sub-Sea = Vertical distance from sea level to any point in the
subsurface.
