The community assessment provides an overview of the geographical, historical, and demographic context of the Jamaica Queens neighborhood where the Bromley family resides. It discusses the boundaries, diversity, and infrastructure of the community.

Some significant historical events of the community include it originally being an ancient trail for local tribes, being taken over by the English in 1664 and renamed Jameco, and the establishment of infrastructure like the post office and railroads in the late 18th and early 20th centuries respectively.

The topography of the community is flat and low-lying. The climate is humid subtropical with warm summers. This could impact an elderly family member's health. Additionally, environmental damage from fires could negatively impact air quality.

Analysis of the community the family resides

Geopolitical, emotional, and structural boundaries

Geopolitical communities relate to the spatial definition of a geographical place or area

and borrow from a traditional view in the study of the community. The geopolitical nature of the

community is formed either through boundaries that are manmade or natural. The human-made

boundaries can be structural, political, or legal. The focus on the geopolitical brings the nurses'

attention to the environment, housing, and political process and subsystems as well as the

distribution and composition of the community (Themes, 2016). The Bromleys reside in the

larger community of Jamaica Queens in New York City. The geographical boundaries of the

neighborhood are about 2675 square miles. The community is defined by structural boundaries

as per the cities historical planning. To the east is the Hollis, the areas of St Albans, Springfield

Gardens and Rochdale are located to the southeast of the community. The northern area of the

community shares boundaries with Jamaica Hills, Kew garden hills, and Jamaica estate. In the

south, the community borders South Jamaica and Richmond Hill to the east. Looking at the

phenomenological or emotional boundaries of the community, the community stands out as one

of the most diverse and cultured areas in the world with over 180 nationalities. Therefore, while

the diverse nature of the community means members of the community do not share the same

cultural beliefs or history, the boundaries within the community are abstract than geopolitical.

Significant historical events within the community

The community was once an ancient trail for the local tribes from the interior coming to

trade in furs and skins. The English took over the surrounding community in 1664 and named the

area Jameco after the local natives living in the area (UrbanNet, 2014). In 1683 the province of

New York was divided into counties by the British and Jamaica became the county seat of

Queens County. In 1805 one of the signatories to the American constitution Rufus relocated to

queens Jamaica and built a Manor that stands in the location now, it is known as Kings Manor

and was restored to a museum known as king manor museum. Significantly, the Jamaican post

office was opened in 1794 and it became the only post office in the Boroughs until 1803.

Moreover, the present long island railroad Jamaican station was completed in 1913 other lines

that followed include the BMT line and IND Queens Blvd. The lines increased transportation in

the area and attributed to migration to the area (UrbanNet, 2014). More recently the December

2012 fire in a junkyard requires the help of 170 firemen and caused significant environmental

damage. Conclusively, in 2014 two police officers from the New York police department were

victims of terrorist attacks in the neighborhood of Queens Jamaica.

Topographical, climatic features significant/impact for family

Looking at the climatic features of Jamaica Queens, the summers are usually warm and

humid and during the winter like most of New York, the weather is usually cold and very windy.

For most of the year, the climate is usually wet and partly cloudy. The weather poses a

significant challenge to Bromely whose son suffers from asthma and the challenge of cold wet

weather might have an impact on asthma. It is quite clear why the family would want to retire to

Florida where the weather is usually warm and sunny.

Economic and Employment climate

The economic and employment climate within the Jamaica area in Queens NY has not

been quite positive in recent decades. For example, during the 1970s there was massive

unemployment that prompted a lot of the community residents to migrate to other areas. The

area lost about 10% of the residents due to economic downfalls (Dinapoli & Bleiwas, 2016). The

economy of the area is closely linked to the John F Kennedy international airport, many of the
COMMUNITY ASSESSMENT 4

residents in the area work within the retail sector, business associated with the airport, and

healthcare (Dinapoli & Bleiwas, 2016). Additionally, the community has one of the highest

numbers of employees working in the protective services among the 55 neighborhoods in the

city, as observed in the Bromely family where Remona is an officer. The extensive transportation

network within the city is also attracting a lot of residents and businesses. In recent years the area

is transforming into a vibrant commercial hub, with a new rezoning plan aimed at attracting

investment and creating job opportunities.

General Services

As stated earlier the community has a lot of people working in the service sector, like

Remona and her husband who works in the vibrant construction industry. The general services

sector of the community helps the federal agencies in the management and support of some

federal functions such as city planning and construction and plumbing (Dinapoli & Bleiwas,

2016). There are about five general services companies in the community of Jamaica Queens and

they deal with construction, and infrastructure maintenance works within the community such as

plumbing and road maintenance. The existence of the general service companies in the area

means that the community infrastructure and public amenities are well maintained and thus

promoting the health and safety of community members.

Health Services

The community of Jamaica Queens has a vibrant health service network that caters to

those with low income and Medicaid although the community is classified as a middle-income

community. However, according to the data collected by New York City health and hospital

organization, the health services in Jamaica queens provided disproportionate services to

residents in the borough with low income or uninsured, For example, the data from 2014 states
COMMUNITY ASSESSMENT 5

that 6 % of the ambulatory visits were uninsured (HHC Corporate Planning Services, 2014). In

Queens Jamaica, there are about 32 clinics and about 134000 Medicaid beneficiaries. The

residents within the community who are uninsured are about 44, 000. With regards to mental

health, the area has the services of about 340 psychiatrists of which about 40% of the psychiatrist

have a patient outlook that consists of 10% who are uninsured 56% who have insurance (HHC

Corporate Planning Services, 2014).

Community resources applicable to family needs/support

One integral community resource in Jamaica Queens is the healthy start program which is

a multi-partnership initiative with networks such as the Nurse-Family partnership and

community health network. The program provides free services to pregnant women, parenting

mothers, and children up to 18 months (Healthsolutions, 2020). The program specializes in

outreach and referrals and is an essential way to connect with the most at-risk families living in

the community. The program provides resources relating to home visits, educational groups, and

fatherhood programs. However, due to the COVID-19 outbreak in New York the offices are

closed

Community Support for the Health and Integrity of the Family

Discuss/summarize the following points:

Identify at least one community institution that is found to be meaningful

and supportive of the family.

One institution that can be supportive and meaningful to the family is the Jamaica

hospital which is providing critical resources and serviced during the COVID-19 pandemic that

can be useful to the family. The area of Jamaica Queens has been hardest hit by the novel
COMMUNITY ASSESSMENT 6

coronavirus and given that Bromely family has members with underlying medical conditions

they require the services of the hospital.

What are the structure, functions, and scope of services of this resource?

The hospital is a large institution with very many services within its structure. The

hospital is one of the largest in the area serving approximately 1.2 million people from the

neighboring communities. The hospital has an emergency department, an ambulatory care

department, and a woman’s health department if Mrs. Remona would want any guidance with

reproductive health given that all other small community programs are closed.

To be eligible for these services, what criteria must be met by the family?

To be eligible for services in the hospital one must be insured and the hospital accepts

both Medicaid programs. However, the Bromely, might not be eligible for Medicaid and must

opt or private insurance.

Is this resource the only resource of its kind?

The resource of coronavirus testing is not one of a kind since it is offered by other public

hospitals in New York. Adding to the health facilities providing the services several mobile

testing units are visiting the boroughs.

Is it a duplication of other resources?

Considering the coronavirus testing a duplication of other services in the hospital is not

accurate. Rather the service is duplicated in other areas of New York. There are several

institutions in New York offering services but since the family lives close to the hospital they can

access the service easily.

What services/characteristics contribute to the preference of this resource

over others by your family?

COMMUNITY ASSESSMENT 7

The area of Jamaica Queens has been hardest hit by the novel coronavirus and given that

Bromely family has members with underlying medical conditions they require the services of the

hospital. Moreover, the services offered by the hospital are free, safe, and easy and the test

results are confidential. Conclusively, the family does not divulge its insurance details.
