Mesh-free (SPH) Solver
Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) Training Manual

• Relatively new technique for solving computational continuum dynamics

problems
• Continuum represented by arbitrary lattice of interacting particles (or
interpolation points)
• No numerical grid
– No grid tangling problems (as in Lagrange)

– No need for erosion

• Lagrangian Technique
– Efficient - only need to model regions where material exists

– Good at tracking material interfaces

– Complex constitutive models can be included

• SPH particles can interact with Lagrange, Shell and ALE parts through
standard interaction logic

SPH – Lagrange Joins Training Manual

• SPH requires significantly more computation than Lagrange

• Accurate SPH simulations require uniformly sized particles throughout the
SPH region
• Joining SPH to Lagrange allows material in low deformation regions to be
modelled using the Lagrange solver
– The mesh in these regions can also be graded to reduce the overall size of the problem
• Available for 2D and 3D “Box” type objects with rectangular edge packing
