1.1. GENERALITY OF THE SYSTEM

PIXEL HF is a high voltage generator for the supply of last generation X-Ray tubes, which com-
bines the advantages of the microprocessor electronics with those of the 100 kHz high frequency
transformer.

PIXEL HF is a high technology equipment with extremely reduced weight and dimensions and
high level performances. It is available in 3 versions having the following maximum power:
50KW / 65KW / 80KW.

Description of the functions: the equipment allows the supply of radiogen tubes of any type or
manufacture. The console operator can handle, control and send the energy provided by varying the
following parameters: voltage, current, time, type of tube and accessory. The transformation of the
low voltage into high voltage is realised by a high frequency transformer combined with an inverter.
All functions of the apparatus are microprocessor controlled and they are displayed by a wide LCD.

OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
• the console may be mounted on pedestal and on wall support;
• the radiographic parameters may be set in two modes:
1. 3 points technique – separate setting of KV-mA-time;
2. 2 points technique – separate setting of KV-mA;
• supply of one or two radiogen tubes with six different accessories;
• manual and automatic setting of fluoroscopy parameters with the possibility of high contrast
pulsed fluoroscopy (25 pulses per second, in the R/F models);
• built-in automatic exposure meter allowing to connect up to four measure chambers with three
fields. Possibility to select three different types of film/screen and to adjust the density correction
based on a 7 value scale. Visualization of the actually delivered mAs, after each exposure;
• anatomical districts programmed technique device APR. At the moment of its use the required
data, KV, mA, sec., are automatically set. However, they can be varied by the operator, at any
moment, either temporarily or definitively. The PROG device of PIXEL HF allows up to 512
different examinations to be stored;

1.2. WARNINGS AND GENERAL NOTES

This manual is meant to provide the technical staff of the Manufacturer, or authorised technical per-
sonnel, with the instructions for a proper installation and maintenance of the equipment

WARNING !
Read attentively this manual before performing the setting up and calibration of the equipment.

Although this equipment is designed and manufactured in compliance with the latest safety regula-
tions, the X-Ray source is still a danger whenever the operator is not qualified or not informed. Ex-
cessive exposure to X-Rays causes damages to the organism.

Therefore, all precautions must be taken to prevent unauthorised or unqualified personnel from us-
ing this equipment, which would be dangerous for themselves and for other persons.

Before they carry out any operation, the personnel qualified and authorised to use this equipment
must be informed of the protection measure issued by the International Committee on Radiological
Protection and of the related national rules.

The ray passage must be controlled from a radiation shielded area.

When stopping near the equipment, during an exposure, wear anti-X Ray protective garments.

The diagnosis system must be provided with audio and visual means for the communications be-
tween the operator, who works in the shielded area, and the patient.

The Company disclaims all responsibility in case of interventions of unauthorised personnel.

The equipment must not be used for purposes other than those provided for.

The Company disclaims all responsibility if the authorised personnel do not comply with the re-
quirements set forth in this manual.

TECHNICAL AND INSTALLATION MANUAL Page 7 of 76

MTEPXH14

Should any anomaly or failure occur which cannot be solved with the instructions given in this
manual, the authorised personnel must consult the manufacturer to get the relevant necessary in-
structions.

This equipment complies with the EEC 89/336 Directive and successive, on the Electromagnetic
Compatibility.

To satisfy such requirements, specific technical measures have been adopted as: antinoise filters
and/or ferrite on some circuits and defined specific ground connections. Metallic covering and their
locks have been made and checked employing fixing devices and special conductive gaskets to en-
sure both immunity to the external noise sources and to limit interference coming from the electric
circuits of the equipment.

Technicians, that will take care for the servicing, are strongly recommended: not to modify
connections and EXACTLY reconnect the ground connectors of the coverings, in case there is
necessary to disconnect them during maintenance and fault isolation operations; to pay great
attention during the replacement of the coverings which must be put in their original position
and fixed by the original devices.

CAUTION
• In order to avoid irreparable damages to some components, do not switch ON and OFF the
equipment repeatedly.
• Each time the equipment is switched OFF, wait for some seconds before switching ON it again

This manual contains instructions relevant to the various versions of this equipment. Some func-
tions might not be activated in the purchased equipment; therefore the exact configuration has to be
ascertained before consulting the manual.

In order to set the KV, the mA and the time on the console, encoders could be present (rotational
devices) or up-down switches. Both the configurations use the same software and this recognises
automatically which device is being used. Therefore, in the present manual, where ENCODER is
mentioned, it is necessary to remind that switches could be on the console.

The Manufacturer disclaims all responsibility concerning the machine working, if the installation or
the maintenance were carried out by unauthorised personnel.

MTEPXH14

5.1. ROOM ARRANGEMENTS

The arrangement of the room for PIXEL HF installation has to include the canalising required
for the connection of accessories. In this paragraph only the arrangement for the connection to the
mains and to the console is dealt with, because it is not possible to unify the typology of accessories
connected.

The cabinet of PIXEL HF allows the entry of the cables through the dedicated openings on the
back of the rack.

For the connection to the mains it is necessary:

1. Three-phase line 3x35mmq. (for length greater 15mt, it is necessary a minimum section of
50mm2) + common 25mm2 provided with a differential thermal-magnetic switch (100 A. 30
mA) and contactor (100 A)driven by a relay 24 V.
2. Two wires with 24Vac coming from a transformer (30 V.A. 220/24) with primary winding inter-
rupted by a switch with key, placed near the console, and by a mushroom safety push-button,
placed in the diagnostics near the radiographic accessory (see electric panel diagram par. 5.2).
3. Two wires for power supplying the relay driving the mains contactor (see electric panel diagram
par. 5.2).
4. Ground 25 mm2 coming from the equipotential point.
5. Four wires for each external signal to the access door to the diagnostic (signals indicating busy
diagnostic and ray passage have to be present).
6. Two wires connected to contacts of access doors to diagnostic (series connection); the circuit
opens by opening the doors.

To connect the console to the cabinet it is necessary a canalising diam. 60 with floor exit (in case of
pedestal) or wall exit (in case of wall support) at the console side and with wall exit ( at about 60
cm height from the floor ) at the cabinet side, for passing the cable furnished.

The canalising to be only used for passing special cables of our provision cannot be used for other
purpose.

The canalising must be performed with bends open or inspectionable through wells and it cab be re-
alized also with external conduits of suitable dimensions.

6.2. ASSEMBLY OF PARTS

After properly unpacking the parts, place the cabinet where indicated in the installation plant
enclosed to the equipment, afterwards open the entry and exit ways for cables of external accesso-
ries and connection to mains, paying attention in closing the not used ones .
Then connect the 25 pin cable that goes from the male connector JP2 of board PXHP12B (ref. 1 fig.
1) to connector CN6 of the board PXHP15A inside the console, connect the shield of cable to FAS-
TON on the rack (ref. 1 fig.1). Warning The console must be grounded by connecting it to the
equipotent node of the cabinet by a 6 sq.mm wire.

6.3. CONNECTION TO THE MAINS

The system is arranged for connection to the national electrical network at 380V 50Hz with neutral.
Connect the three-phases of the line and the neutral to the corresponding terminals R-S-T-N placed
on the supply rack ( ref. 5 fig.2 ), taking care of passing the cables through the appropriate fasteners
on the rack.
Connect, with a 25 sq.mm wire, the ground equipotential node of the cabinet to that of the electrical
system.
For more details consult the paragraph “2.8.2 Power Supply Mains Connection” of the “100 KHz

MTEPXH14

6.3.1. MAINS CONTACTOR CONNECTION

The apparatus starts to work by supplying to it the three-phase 380Vac voltage. This is done by
pressing push-buttons ON/OFF.
The contactor call is performed by an internal circuit, placed on the PXHS010 board, that is con-
nected to the M2 terminal board.
The mains electrical panel must deliver a 24Vac voltage on terminals 3M2 and 4M2 in order to feed
the switching on circuit.
The ON/OFF command is performed by the opening and the closing of a relay contact that is con-
nected to 3M2 and 4M2 terminals. This contact is for driving the coil of the mains contactor.
TECHNICAL AND INSTALLATION MANUAL Page 25 of 76

6.5. SAFETIES AND EXTERNAL SIGNALLINGS CONNECTION

The apparatus foresees:
• the connection of the thermal safety for the installed tubes,
• the signalling, with relevant interdiction, of rays passage for the diagnostic doors,
• the presence of an external signalling of system working and rays.

6.5.1. THERMAL SAFETIES

The thermal safety of TUBE 1 (free contact, normally closed) must be connected between termi-
nals 1 and 3 M4; the thermal safety of TUBE 2 (free contact, normally closed) must be connected
between terminals 2 and 4 M4. Afterwards it is necessary to combine the accessory, connected to
the generator, to the thermal safety of the tube which is going to be used; this can be performed by
selecting the correct position of relevant SW placed on the board PXHS010. Then it is necessary
place the jumper SW1 between PIN 1 and 2 if accessory 1 is connected to TUBE 1 and between
PIN 2 and 3 if connected to TUBE 2. In the same way, it is necessary to insert jumpers SW2, SW3,
SW4, SW5 e SW6 corresponding to relevant accessories 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
IN THE CASE THAT THE THERMAL SAFETY ON THE TUBE IS ABSENT, MAKE A
SUBSTITUTIVE JUMPER BETWEEN TERMINALS 1-3 M4 AND 2-4 M4.

6.6. GENERATOR REMOTE CONTROL

In the following chapter there are described the connection modalities to control the radiography,
fluoroscopy and potter by means of the accessories.

6.6.1. FLUOROSCOPY CONNECTION

It is possible to carry out the fluoroscopy by a remote control from the accessory, while the same
operation can be controlled from the console only when in modality CALIBRATION. The fluoros-
copy is activated by relay RL18 of board PXHS010; this is achieved by grounding (GNDPW of
board PXHS010) indifferently terminals 11 or 12 M5 (FLUORO). The board PXHS010 is provided
with 6 relays which are energized at the selection of 6 possible accessories. One of two contacts of
these relays is connected between ground and the relevant terminals from 1 to 8M8; by putting in
series to these contacts the fluoroscopy control of the accessory, the control of rays can be per-
formed only when the accessory is inserted. The relay RL18 has another free contact with output on
terminals 10(n.c.), 11(n.o.) and 12(com.) of M6.

6.6.2. KV AUTOMATIC IN FLUOROSCOPY AND HCF CONNECTION

The apparatus is provided with the “KV balance” for the automatic fluoroscopy; its action
consists in driving the diode of two opto-insulators (ISO1 and ISO2 of PXHS010) supplying a
24Vdc voltage to terminals 5 M4 (+) 6 M4 (-) for KVup and 7 M4 (+) and 8 M4 (-) for KVdown;
the mentioned opto-insulators has to be controlled by the relative connected TV system.
Example of connection by using the 24Vdc of board PXHS010:

PIXEL HF CABINET

TV SYSTEM

In HCF it works in the same way, therefore connect as in the diagram.

6.6.3. HCF (High Contrast Fluoro)

It is possible to perform HCF only by a remote control from accessory; it is selected by grounding
(GNDPW 9 M4) the terminal 10 of M4 of board PXHS010. Said control has to be released at the
end of HCF modality The generator arranges itself automatically for executing the HCF with KV
values set for the fluoroscopy and enabling the inputs for the automatic KV. The accessory will
have to execute in sequence the radiography preparation and afterwards the radiography com-
mands at the desired ratio, without having to remake the preparation after each shot; the exposure
time is determined by the accessory in compatibility with the number of images per second. The
generator reaches a maximum image rate of 30 images per second.

TECHNICAL AND INSTALLATION MANUAL Page 31 of 76

MTEPXH14

Connection diagram:

6.6.4. MCF (Medium Contrast Fluoro)

MCF modality is a pulsed fluoroscopy, so, as in the continuous fluoroscopy, the functions S, M, H are en-
abled, the duration time of the exposure is counted and the x-ray tube rotor launch is made at 3000 turns with
a short time duration of about 300 mS. It is possible to make MCF only with a remote control as accessory; it
is selected closing terminal 4 of M5 of PHXP10A board at ground, said control has to be released at the end
of MCF modality. It is possible to perform MCF only by a remote control from accessory; it is selected by
grounding (GNDPW 3 M5) the terminal 4 of M5 of board PXHS010, said control has to be released at the
end of HCF modality. The generator arranges itself automatically for executing the MCF with KV values set
for the fluoroscopy and enabling the inputs for the automatic KV. The accessory will have to execute in se-
quence the radiography preparation and afterwards the radiography commands at the desired ratio, with-
out having to remake the preparation after each shot; the exposure time is determined by the accessory in
compatibility with the number of images per second. The generator reaches a maximum image rate of 30 im-
ages per second. For the connection diagram refer to the one relative to HCF, it changes only 10 M4 with 4
M5.

6.6.5. RADIOGRAPHY CONNECTION

The apparatus allows the radiography execution from both the consoles (“live”) and the accessory (with the
remote controls ). The PXHS010 board has 6 relays (from RL7 to RL12), each of them has two contacts that
allow to control the potter and to execute the rays only from the desired accessory. The sequence of opera-
tions executed for one shot can be therefore summarized as follows: at the end of the PREPARATION (an-
ode launch time and tube filament heating time) the relay (RL7..RL 12) of potter command of selected ac-

MTEPXH14

cessory is energized, thus driving the respective potter that, in its turn, will close the rays contact, placed in
series with the second contact of relay (XRPOTTI...XRPOTT6). Therefore, to connect the “live” shot (with-
out accessory), it is necessary to insert a jumper between terminal 1...6M10 (potter rays contact of selected
accessory) and the remote rays control (XRCMD) terminals from 7 M10 to 12 M10.
Connection diagram:

To perform PREPARATION by remote controls, it is necessary to connect the remote control

PRCMD terminals 9-10-11-12 of M8 to PSACC1...PSACC6 terminals 1...8M8. It is possible to per-
form PREPARATION directly from the console by pressing the rays push-button.

6.6.6. POTTER CONNECTION

The apparatus foresees the connection of 220 Vac and 24 Vac powered potters. The board
PXHS010 has 6 relays RL7...RL12 (relevant to 6 connectable accessories) for driving the potters
that are energized at the end of the PREPARATION command, providing a free normally open con-
tact to be combined to the available voltage on the terminal board M3 (1-2-3-4-0 Vac, 5-6-7-8-220
Vac, 9-10 24Vac).
Therefore, the potter release will be at 24 Vac or 220 Vac depending on the power supply voltage of
the connected accessory. The contact of the potter rays enabling will have to close the remote rays
control XRC MD terminals 7-8-9-10-11-12 M10 with XRPOTT1....XRPOTT6 terminals 1.. 6M10.

6.6.7. AUXILIARY CONTACTS FOR ACCESSORY INSERTION

The board PXHS010 has 6 relays for switching FLUOROSCOPY and PREPARATION controls
among the six connectable accessories (RL1, RL2, RL3, RL4, RL5 and RL6); these relays have a
second contact available for auxiliary use. These contacts are usually open and respectively con-
nected to terminals 1-2 M7 RL1, 3-4 M7 RL2, 5-6M7 RL3, 7-8M7 RL4, 9-10M7 RL5, 11-12M7
RL6.
Moreover on terminals 11M3 and 12M3 there is connected a normally open clean contact of the re-
lay relative to the rays passage external signalling that closes during the rays passage both in radiog-
raphy and in fluoroscopy from any accessory.
6.6.8. RADIOGRAPHY RAYS EXPOSURE TIME SIGNALLING

The apparatus has an output that allows to drive a relay (absorption 30mA max.) towards ground
during the rays passage with no distinction if the command comes from the console or from a re-
mote control (accessory). This is useful especially in digital radiology systems for signalling the
real rays passage. This control drives, also, relay RL17 coming out with an exchanging contact on
terminals 7 (n.o), 8 (n.c.) and 9 (com.) of M6.

7.2.1 “ 1 SEL TUBE”

By selecting the menu 1 “SEL TUBE” the display will visualize the following headings:

Procedure to be followed:
1. Select the accessory to be configured by the suitable keys present on the console (17 and 26); the
display will show in the relative frame the number of the selected accessory. By pressing the key
9 (cyclic function) select the symbol to be associated.

TECHNICAL AND INSTALLATION MANUAL Page 45 of 76

MTEPXH14

The symbols differ for the following peculiarities:

• Symbols 2, 9 and 10 represent accessories with Digital system, with which the KV selection is
automatically performed dependent upon the fluoroscopy KV; this occurs by the transfer
curves S, M, H (when selected).
• Symbols 8-9 represent stratigraphic accessory and have the characteristic of taking the expo-
sure time to the maximum of the tube charging curve, disabling the time-rays adjustment from
the encoder of the console.
• The other symbols have not particular characteristics because they are only graphic references
for the accessory identification.
2. By inserting the relative code (see “TABLE OF TUBE CODES”) on the row “TUBE TYPE:” it
is automatically configured the generator according to the characteristics of the connected tube
(maximum load, focal spot, anode rotation velocity, etc.). Two codes are present on the row, the
first one is relative to tubes with low rotation velocity (50Hz), the second one is relative to tubes
with high rotation velocity (150Hz). If it is installed a tube with low rotation velocity (50Hz), it
is necessary to insert the relevant code on the first field and 00 on the second one. If it is installed
a tube with high rotation velocity (150Hz), it is necessary to insert the code of the relative tube
with low rotation velocity (50Hz) in the first field and the code with characteristic of high veloc-
ity (150Hz) in the second field. The commutation of the rotation velocity will occur dependent
upon the radiographic parameters set to carry out the shot.
In case there is no need to get the commutation of the two rotation velocities according to the
load but just execute a high speed rotation it will be sufficient to select in both fields the code of
the x-ray tube related to the high speed.
The key 3 sets the value of the first code (cyclic function) and the key 10 for the second code
(cyclic function).

3. By the key 11 it is determined the position of the tube on the generator; by pressing repeatedly
the key the two generator positions (1 and 2) alternate; hence, if 1 appears on the “ TUBE
POSITION “ row, the tube/accessory will be linked to the “TUBE 1” generator workplace,
and, if 2 appears, it will be linked with “ TUBE 2 “ generator workplace.
4. Pixel HF allows the contemporaneous connection of 4 ionisation chambers which can be
combined any of 6 accessories. For the connection of the ionisation chambers, on board
PXHS010 are present connectors P1, P2, P3, P4 combined with correspondent codes 1-2-3-4
or 1S-2S-3S-4S. By means of key 12 the ionisation chamber is combined with the desired ac-
cessory, e.g.: accessory 1 ionisation chamber linked to connector P2 it is necessary to insert 2
or 2S. The difference between value 1S-2S-3S-4S and 1-2-3-4 consists in the different posi-
tion of the three fields (one for teleradiography and one for the troco table), see figures A and
B.
NOTE: the exposure meter is enabled only in presence of board PXHF5.

7.2.2. “ 6 POT MAX ”

This operation allows to select the maximum power supplied by the mains in coincidence to the
maximum power that the apparatus can bear. Besides, it allows the apparatus configuration accord-
ing to the following parameters:

By the keys 3 (decreasing) and 10 (increasing) set the desired power value and by key 11 set the
maximum mA value dependent upon the apparatus performances (see the plate data and paragraph
“2.5. MODELS, PERFORMANCES, POWER SUPPLY” for maximum power and mA).
By the keys 5 (decreasing) and 12 (increasing) set the desired maximum kV . The function is
qualified on both two x-ray tubes, therefore before setting the kV desired limit, it is necessary to se-
lect the accessory related to the tube.
At last, by key 9 it is possible to select two different scales of mA of radiography, with the follow-
ing characteristics:

7.2.3. “2 STANDBY”
By selecting the menu 2 STANDBY, the display will visualize the following fields:

It is necessary to set the number to assign to the converter for the value of current circulating in the
filaments in rest condition (STAND-BY); typical value ~ 030 (~ 2.2 A).

Procedure to be followed:
1. Select the workplace to which the RX tube is connected.
2. With the key 9 select the small focus by selecting “S” at the heading “FOCAL SPOT”.
3. Adjust the calibration number, with keys 10 (increasing) and 3 (decreasing), till to obtain the de-
sired current value and store by pressing the key 2 “M”. It is possible to carry out the reading of
the current value directly on the display in correspondence of Amp. [n.nn] (the measure is per-
formed in ampere), or by placing a MULTIMETER on TP4 of board PXHS011 (the reading is
referred to GND of the board and TP9 see figure 10); the measured voltage has the following
correspondence: 1V = 1A.
Attention: the board PXHS011 generates a minimum level of 2 Amp of standby, therefore with
converter number 000 it will always be 2 Amp.
3. With the key 9 select the great focus by choosing “L” at heading “FOCAL SPOT”. Carry out the
same calibration procedure performed for the small focus; the measure with the MULTIMETER
has to be done on TP3 of board PXHS011.
4. In order to solve the problem of the “awaiting times” during the preparation phase for an expo-
sure, by means of this calibration, the launch time of the tube rotor and the heating time of fila-
ments are drastically reduced thus letting the installer free of fixing the duration depending on
the customer requirements. To obtain this in the menu relative to the calibration of the
STANDBY current there are present other three parameters marked by labels BOOST, WARM
and DELAY. WARM represents the value, in hundreds of mSec, of the time of application of a
strong current to the concerned filament capable of causing a quick overheating of it; such value
can be set with the key 4 (cyclic function) and has a value ranging from 01 to 09. DELAY is the
time (always in hundreds of mSec) of its cooling to the value of the rated current suitable for a
correct exposure; such value can be set with the key 11 (cyclic function) and has a value ranging
from 01 to 14. The sum of WARM and DELAY values determines the time of PREPARATION
in radiography. The value of the BOOST current can be set by selecting the correspondent mo-
dality by using the suitable activation key 12 and by operating following the usual modalities
relevant to the calibration of the STANDBY current. In this phase of work with label BOOST
pointed out, it is possible the control of the BOOST current, by means of a common multimeter

placed applied to the test points relative to the filament currents on in the frame AMP of the dis-
play (see previous paragraphs). The reading of the exact value is obtained by pressing the rays
push-button placed on the console and for all the time during which it is held pressed. If it is not
necessary to use the BOOST, it is advisable to adjust at 01 the value of WARM.

ATTENTION: The calibration has to be repeated also on the second workplace of the gen-
erator, if present.

7.2.4. “4 CAL FLR”

This menu allows the calibration of the mA value in FLUOROSCOPY, MCF and HCF.
Before starting with the calibration procedure it is necessary to know that in FLUOROSCOPY the
system works in the following way: calibrate a value of mA at 40 KV (typical 1mA) and one at
125KV (typical 3,5mA), this will allow to get an mA linear variation in relation to KV supplied.
In manual FLUOROSCOPY the generator applies the same criterion when pressing the KV increas-
ing button it arrives at the maximum or at the minimum with the KV decreasing KV, with the dif-
ference that the following variation of mA is pointed out by an acoustic intermittent signalling.

Procedure to be performed for the mA calibration of FLUOROSCOPY:

1. Place the measure instrument (millivoltmeter or oscilloscope) on TP 5 board PXHS011 consider-
ing that it is measured a dc voltage with an anodic current ratio of 0,4V= 1mA.
2. With the key 9 set the mode FLR.
3. With the key 11 select the minimum KV (40KV) and with keys 3 (decreasing) and 10 (increas-
ing) set the converter number (DAC) to obtain desired mA, by storing the value with the 2 “M”.
4. Press the release key 38 (radiography preparation button) of the console and perform a fluoros-
copy for measuring the value of desired mA (obviously this is possible only in fluoroscopy cali-
bration).
5. Always with key 11 select the maximum KV (120KV) and with the usual procedure adjust the
mA to the desired value.
6. When the operations have been completed, the apparatus generates the table of the KV/mA lin-
ear state, then leave this MENU’ or repeat the procedure having care to start from point 1.

Procedure to be followed for calibration of mA of HCF:

1. Press the key 9 and select the HCF calibration menu.
2. With keys 5 (increasing) and 12 (decreasing) set the amplitude of rays passage pulse, parameters
which ranges from about 08 to 40 equivalent to a variation from about 1,5 to 18 mSec; during
the calibration phase the cadence is determined by the generator, in working mode it depends on
the accessory.
3. Place the measure instrument (memory oscilloscope) on TP 1 of board PXHS011 taking into ac-
count that it is measured an impulsive voltage with the ratio of 1V= 100mA of anodic current.
4. With key 11 select the minimum KV (40KV) and with keys 3 (decreasing) and 10 (increasing)
set the number of converter (DAC) to get the desired mA, storing the value by the key 2 “M”.
5. Press the release key 38 (radiography preparation button) of the console and carry out HCF for
measuring the desired mA value (this is obviously possible only in HCF). At the moment of the
release, in order to perform the measurement, the apparatus carries out a series of exposures.
6. Always by the key 11 select the maximum KV (120KV) and adjust the mA up to the desired
value by means of the usual procedure.
7. At the end of operations, the apparatus produces internally the table of the KV/mA linear state,
then leave this MENU’ or repeat the procedure starting from point 1.

Procedure to be followed for calibration of mA of MCF:

1. Press the key 9 and select the MCF calibration menu.
2. Apply the same procedure used for the HCF calibration.

ATTENTION !!!! it is possible to perform MCF and HCF only on TUBE 1.

7.2.5. “3 CAL RAD”

The display will show the converter value (dac) for the calibration of mA of RADIOGRAPHY.

Procedure to be performed:
1. Before proceeding, check the correct setting of parameters of menu “6 POT MAX”.
2. Fix the maximum value of current by which it is possible to have the rays passage using the
small filament; press the key 9 till the desired value is reached (the visualized value is the first
value executed on the large focus).
3. The calibration is performed at 70KV 20mSec; therefore verify and, if necessary, select these pa-
rameters by means of relevant encoders (knobs 35 and 37). Set on the accessory connected in
“LIVE”. Place the measure instrument (memory oscilloscope) on TP 1 of board PXHS011, tak-
ing into account that it is measured an impulsive voltage with the ratio of 1V= 100mA of an-
odic current. In the window for the calibration data visualization, it is possible to read the values
of mA actually supplied and compare them with the ones measured by the oscilloscope.
4. By the relevant encoder (knob 36), set the value of mA to be calibrated and by means of keys 10
(increasing) and 3 (decreasing) adjust the DAC number of calibration storing the value with the
key 2 “M”. Press the release key 39 performing the operation at one time. Measure the obtained
mA value and adjust again the DAC number till the set mA values are obtained.
5. Repeat this operation for each current value that can be selected on CONSOLE. By changing the
current value, the selected focus will be visualized by proper symbol and an L or S will appear
beside the writing “FOCAL SPOT”.

ATTENTION: Since the table, according to the load curve of the radiogen tube, automatically al-
lows to execute 200 and 250 mA on both focuses, it is necessary, during the calibration phase, to
adjust them both on large focus and on small focus. This can be obtained by pressing the key 11, or

by setting the 200mA (or 250mA), automatically the table set itself to S (small focus); once cali-
brated, by pressing the key 11 it is changed to L (large focus) and it is necessary to perform again
the calibration procedure.
It is however advisable to calibrate always during the installation phase all the mA values also on
the large focus.

7.2.6. “7 EQUALIZ”
This functions allows to compensate the mA calibration dependent upon the KV variation. At the
switching on a table exists, hence it has to be changed only in case of tubes with a different re-
sponse.

WORKING AND REGULATION PRINCIPLE

The compensation is performed in steps of 10KV and therefore the mA calibration will have to be
checked, if necessary, starting from 40KV to 150KV or 125KV, the shot for the measurement of pa-
rameters can be performed directly from the calibration menu.
Afterwards it is possible to compensate the calibration by changing with keys 10 (increasing) and 3
(decreasing) the “VARIATION” number, considering that for the KV range from 40 to 70 it can be
from 0 to +9 and for the KV range from 70 to 150 (or 125) it can be from 0 to -9.
After changing the number, it is possible to carry out an exposure in order to check the correct
value.

Calibration and configuration of ionisation chambers

1. Once the accessory has been selected (keys 17 and 26) where the ionisation chamber is installed,
it is necessary to configure the chamber number taking into account to select 1S-2S-3S-4S ac-
cording to the accessory in which it is placed for the configuration Figure A or 1-2-3-4 for the
configuration Figure B, which differ for the position of the three fields for the teleradiograph and
for the troco table (for the setting out see paragraph 7.2.1 “1 SEL TUBE”). Notice that in work-
ing mode it is lit the central “bar” of the 0 of the density correction to show that on that acces-
sory the exposure meter is installed and in order to select it, it is enough to press the key of one
of the three fields or of the screen velocity.
2. After being sure of the correct working of the three fields of the chamber and the homogeneity of
response of the same, the calibration can be performed.

TECHNICAL AND INSTALLATION MANUAL Page 58 of 76

MTEPXH14

7.2.7.1. CALIBRATION PRINCIPLE

The calibration is performed by changing the number of converter in the configuration menu at the
heading “EXPOSIM” for each screen-film coupling (SX, MD, DX). It is advisable not to go under
40 (NC > 40) or over 120 (NC < 120), in the case it is necessary to perform a course change, adjust
the gain of the ionisation chamber.

Proceed as follows:
Select the screen to be calibrated; memorize the 80 initial value after setting the kV and adequate
mA; carry out repeated exposures on a subject until an optimal result is obtained by changing only
the datum on the screen register. Because the response curve of the screens at the variation of the
KV is not linear, to compensate this change the exposure meter uses 5 calibration points different
for each screen with the following voltage intervals:

Point 1 50 kV 57 kV Recommend value 95

Point 2 58 kV 66 kV Recommend value 90

Point 3 67 kV 80 kV Recommend value 85

Point 4 81 kV 115 kV Recommend value 80

Point 5 116 kV 150 kV Recommend value 70

This racommend values is a indicative value. Check the calibration and correct it if is necessary.
Repeat the operation for the tree sreen

The next step depends on calibrating each point (VOLTAGE RANGE) by changing the DAC num-
ber that appears setting a KV value relative to the technique to be regulated.

Attention all calibrations are independent from the selection of the three fields; it is enough to re-
spect the selected chambers until the end of the setting.

7.2.7.2. CALIBRATION OF EXPOSURE METER FOR ABDOMEN

Recommended procedure to perform a precalibration of the exposure meter for examinations on

ABDOMEN:

Set the DFF to 110 cm, insert on the collimator a filter of 1mm CU plus 12 mm of Plexiglas; be-
cause of difficulties for fixing the Plexiglas on the collimator, it is advisable to place it on the con-
cerned measure field of the ionisation chamber (initially on the central field).
On the generator select the accessory relative to the exposure meter and enter the calibration. Set 85
Kv 250 mA, select the central field of the exposure meter and set a DAC value of 100.
Carry out an exposure and check that the response is to the order of 25 mAs. In the case that the re-
sponse is notably lower or higher, increase or decrease the general gain of the chamber so that with
a DAC number within 90 and 120 the response is to the order of 25 mAs.
Insert one of the two lateral fields and exclude the central one (remembering to place the Plexiglas
on the concerned measure field). Carry out an exposure and check that the response in mAs results
similar to that one found with the central field; in case of difference provide to the realignment of
the measure fields, in case it is not possible replace the ionisation chamber.
Perform the same operation by inserting the other lateral fields and excluding that one previously
checked.
End the calibration by following the principle suggested in the tables, performing the first survey of
the O.D at 98 Kv with the shims described in the table.

On the generator select the accessory relative to the exposure meter and enter the calibration. Set 85
Kv 300 mA, select the central field of the exposure meter and set a DAC value of 100.
Carry out an exposure and check that the response is to the order of 6/7 mAs. In the case that the re-
sponse is notably lower (2/3 mAs) or higher (9/10 mAs), increase or decrease the general gain of
the chamber so that with a DAC number within 90 and 120 the response is to the order of 6/7 mAs.
Insert one of the two lateral fields and exclude the central one. Carry out an exposure and check that
the response in mAs results similar to that one found with the central field; in case of difference
provide to the realignment of the measure fields, in case it is not possible replace the ionisation
chamber.
Perform the same operation by inserting the other lateral fields and excluding that one previously
checked.

End the calibration by following the principle suggested in the tables, performing the first survey of
the O.D at 98 Kv with the shims described in the table.

7.2.8. “ 8 LANGUAGE ”
The Pixel HF allows to personalize the anatomic table with the desired language. The avail-
able languages are 4: Italian, English, French and Slovak. All the calibration and configuration
menus are in English.

With the keys 3 and 10 select the code corresponding to the desired language. Afterwards switch off
the apparatus and switch on it again by holding pressed the key 8.
The apparatus will start again and show the writing LINK for all the time required to send the anat-
omic table from eprom of the CPU cabinet to the batteriezed ram present on the CPU of the con-
sole. At the end, the Pixel HF is ready for use.
The codes relevant to the language are the following:

LANGUAGE CODE
ITALIAN I
ENGLISH GB
SLOVAC SK
FRENCH F

AT THE END OF THE OPERATION PRESS THE KEY 1 TO GO BACK TO THE MAIN
MENU.

7.2.9. “9 TV CAMERA”

This calibration is necessary because, by using the PIXEL coupled with systems of digital acquisi-
tion fitted with CCD television cameras, it is greatly problematic the correct working of the fluoros-
copy automatic system.
This is due to the fact that the system for dose adjustment from part of the control table being very
quick brings to unavoidable phenomena of oscillation in attempting to balance the value of the op-
timal dose.

TECHNICAL AND INSTALLATION MANUAL Page 64 of 76

MTEPXH14

The regulation of the sensitivity is made with FLR parameter for the continuous fluoroscopy and
with HCF parameter for HCF and MCF (pulsed fluoroscopy).

The mentioned calibration introduces a kind of delay in the response, at request of KV change.
Of course such delay can be set during the apparatus installation phase and its change satisfies all
possible requirements of calibration of the combined television camera.
It is enough to set the desired value by the key 10. It is possible to try out immediately the per-
formed change, without leaving the menu.
The increase of the value of the concerned parameter generates a growth of the inertia during the
system response, therefore it is necessary to find the right compromise between velocity and stabil-
ity of the automatic adjustment of the radioscopy KV.

7.2.10. EXIT FUNCTION

By pressing the key 8 the CALIBRATION MODE closes.

8. MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR

TECHNICAL AND INSTALLATION MANUAL Page 66 of 76
MTEPXH14

8.1. MAINTENANCE
Before any intervention, the Maintenance man must set the apparatus to stop position and in condi-
tion that it can be started again only with his consent (apparatus disconnected).
At times the maintenance technician has to verify the results of performed operations, or he has to
carry out a troubleshooting procedure with the apparatus in working condition. In this case precise
and unbreakable instructions must be given so that:
• The operator controlling the equipment and the Maintenance man can look at themselves recip-
rocally for an easy and unequivocal communication.
• The operator operates according the orders given by the Maintenance man.
• The maintenance operation is always performed with an appropriate lighting.
The maintenance man must be informed about the exact function of each part of the equipment. If
there should be any doubts, he has to refer to the CONCERNED sections of this manual; moreover
he should pay attention to the signalling plates mounted on the equipment.
The welding operations could damage instrumentations and electric and/or electronics devices if
these are under tension. In this case, therefore, it is advisable to disconnect electrically the appara-
tus.

The maintenance operations to be performed, with annual periodicity, are the following:
⇒ Check the correct tightening of ring nuts of high voltage cables connected to RX generator (par.
4.1. ref. 6 fig. 2).
⇒ Check the correct tightening of ring nuts of high voltage cables connected to RX sheath.
⇒ Check for presence of silicone on ends of the high voltage cable, both on sheath side and on RX
generator side.
⇒ Check and adjust the following reference voltages:
1. check on the console that the voltage value on the board CPU194 is 5,00Vcc<V<5,10Vcc, if
necessary adjust the switching power supplyAL1 (see power supply diagrams);
2. on the board PXHS011 check, and if necessary adjust, P1 to obtain 2,00Vcc (REF02) on TP7;
3. on the board PXHS011 check, and if necessary adjust, P2 to obtain 10,00Vcc (REF10) on
TP8;
4. on the board PXHS011 check, and if necessary adjust, P3 to obtain 4,00Vcc (REF06) on TP6;
⇒ Check and if necessary calibrate again the radiographic parameters, stand-by, KV, mA and Time
of installed tubes.
