Topic: Plate Tectonics
Learning Competencies & Code: The learners should be able to describe the distribution of active volcanoes,
earthquake epicenters, and major mountain belts. S10ES –Ia-j-36.1
Content:
Our country is blessed with so many land features such as
mountains and volcanoes. These features can be sources of
different minerals or can be used for agricultural purposes. For
example, we have the majestic and world renowned Mayon
Volcano. Because of its activity, it produces fertile slopes and
plains which are used by the locals to grow their crops. Also,
found in the northeastern coast of Luzon, we have the Sierra
Madre mountain range which is home to many endemic
species of flora and fauna.
PLATE TECTONIC
Plate tectonics is the theory that Earth's outer shell is divided into several plates that glide over the mantle.
The outer shell is called crust which has two forms:
1. Continental crust: crust that forms the continent.
Thicker but less dense because it is composed
mainly of granite.
2. Oceanic crust: crust under the ocean. Thinner but
more denser because it is composed mainly of
basalt.
Activity 1: List the Plates!
Using the figure below, classify the plates on the table
whether it is major continental plate, minor continental
plate, or oceanic plate.
EARTHQUAKE ,ACTIVE
VOLCANOES & MOUNTAIN BELTS
Epicenter: the point on the earth's surface directly above the focus of an earthquake.
Focus: point of origin where the earthquake happen.
Fault: a break in a rock in which movement has occurred.
Formula:
Where:
d: distance (km)
Td: time difference in the arrival time of P-wave and S-wave (seconds)

Guide questions:
Q4. Why is it important for us to identify areas which are prone to earthquakes?
Q7.Based on the map, mention a country that is unlikely to experience a volcanic eruption.
Q.9 What do you think is the basis of scientist in dividing Earth’s lithosphere into several plates?
