MID-SEMESTER - EXAMINATION-2020
CME 228 PARTICULATE SYSTEMS HND II

1. A height-time curve for the sedimentation of a suspension in a vertical cylindrical vessel is

shown in Text-Figure below. The initial solids concentration of the suspension is 150 kg/m3.
Determine:
a. The velocity of the interface between clear liquid and suspension of concentration
150 kg/m3.
b. The time from the start of the test at which the suspension of concentration 240
kg/m3 is in contact with the clear liquid.
c. The velocity of the interface between the clear liquid and suspension of
concentration 240 kg/m3.
d. The velocity at which a layer of concentration 240 kg/m3 propagates upwards from
the base of the vessel.
e. The concentration of the final sediment.

2. The raw data below represents a sieving analysis carried out by a 3rd year chemical
Engineering student during a project work. The size range for the activated carbon he
prepared had these sizes after sieving in a Tyrock mechanical screen as follows:

Size (mm) Mass (g)

19.00 3.36
12.50 47.31
9.50 174.02
6.30 158.18
4.75 37.49
2.36 27.00

[DENSITY OF PARTICLES = 2650 kg/ m3, K = 1x107]

i. If this was done in a laboratory with a manual shaker of screens with different
sizes , draw a simple set up to demonstrate how these sizes would be
represented in a simple sieving set up. Show the sequence in the representation
based on the particle sizes.

ii. How would u determine the number of particles in each sieve from the mass
fractions of the particles in each sieve?

iii. Determine the volume mean diameter of the particles during the analysis.

iv. Plot a size distribution curve for the analysis.

v. If a jaw crusher of crushing strength 70 MN/m2 requires 9 kW during crushing of

gypsum from 6 mm diameter average size to 0.1 mm diameter average size is
used to crush the activated carbon from an average size of 22 mm. estimate the
power required if the crushing strength for the activated gypsum is 90 MN/m2 if
crushing follows Kick’s law.

3. In a cement industry, power of 3 kW is supplied to a machine crushing limestone at

the rate of 0.3 kg/s from 12.5 mm cubes to a product having the following sizes: 80
per cent 3.175 mm, 10 percent 2.5 mm and 10 per cent 2.25 mm.
i. Calculate the mass mean diameter and predict which of the three (3) laws
in crushing should be applied.
ii. Applying the law in (i), calculate the power that should be supplied to the
crusher to crush 0.3 kg/s of the same material from 7.5 mm cube to 2.0
mm cube?
4. A single rectangular sedimentation basin is to be designed to treat a water flow of 1.5 MGD
at the design overflow rate of 900 gpd/ft2. Determine the basin dimensions (width, length,
depth) for a detention (retention) time of 3 hours and a length to width ratio of 4 to 1.
