Preface

Concrete mix design is a procedure of selecting the suitable ingredients of concrete and their
relative proportions with an objective to prepare concrete of certain minimum strength,
desired workability and durability as economically (value engineered) as possible.

As we decide to go for a concrete mix design, collect the following data beforehand as few
designs’ stipulation are freezed on the basis of these data.
MINING CHEMICAL SUPPLIERS
Preliminary Data for Design Mix as per ACI Method
Coarse aggregate = subangular crushed stone
Nominal maximum aggregate size = 3/4" here we take under 19 mm
Design strength = 30 Mpa
Specified slump = 3-4"

Description Cement Coarse Aggregate Fine Aggregate

Bulk Density _ 1600 Kg/m3 _
Fines Modules _ _ 2.60

Step 1: Select the slump

The choice of slump determines the workability of the mix. Workability encompasses a combination of PCC properties
that are related to the rheology of the concrete mix: ease of mixing, ease of placing, ease of compacting, ease of
finishing. You should aim for the stiffest mix that will provide adequate placement. The following table shows some
typical slump ranges for several different applications.
As per table 9-6 various types of construction, A slump is 100 mm specified.
Step 2: Select the NMAS
The maximum aggregate size will affect parameters such as cement paste content, workability and strength. In general,
the maximum aggregate size is limited by the dimensions of the finished product and the room available inside the
formwork, taking into account things such as rebar. If the coarse aggregate is too large the concrete may be difficult to
consolidate and compact in the forms, resulting in a honeycombed structure or large air pockets.
Choice of maximum size of aggregate: The maximum size of aggregate of 20 mm is specified.
Step 3: Estimate of water content and air content:
From Table 14.5 from ACI 211.1-91 for a slump of 100 mm and a maximum size of aggregate of 20 mm (or 19 mm), the
water requirement is approximately 205 kg per cubic meter of concrete.
Step 4: Selection of water/cement ratio:
From past experience, a water/cement ratio of 0.48 is expected to result in concrete with a compressive strength,
measured on cylinders, of 30 MPA see (Table 2 ACI 211.1-91). There are no special durability requirements.
Step 5: Calculation of cement content:
The cement content is 205/0.48=427 kg/m3.
Step 6: Estimate of coarse aggregate content:
1. Volume of concrete = 1 m3
2. Volume of cement = (Mass of cement / Specific gravity of cement) x (1/100) = (427/3.15) x (1/1000) = 0.135 m3
3. Volume of water = (Mass of water / Specific gravity of water) x (1/1000) = (205/1) x (1/1000) = 0.205 m3
4. Total Volume of Aggregates = 1- (b+c) =1- (0.135+0.205) = 0.660m3
5. Mass of coarse aggregates = d X Volume of Coarse Aggregate X Specific Gravity of Coarse Aggregate X 1000 =
0.660 X 0.60 X 2.80 X 1000 = 1108.80 kgs/m3

Step 7: Estimate of fine aggregate content:
1. Mass of fine aggregates = d X Volume of Fine Aggregate X Specific Gravity of Coarse Aggregate X 1000 =
0.660 X 0.40 X 2.70 X 1000 = 717.12 kgs/m3
