The story is based on the true story by Erin Gruwell whom is a dedicated teacher in a racially
divided Los Angeles school receives ‘at risk’ students who faced a lot or hardship and violent
situation in their lives. Rather than giving up, she inspires her students to take an interest in their
education and future. She has encouraged her students to keep journal of their daily lives.
QUESTION 1:
The script line “the battle’s already lost” and “I think the real fighting should happen here in the
classroom,” means that, there is no chance that they will succeed in defending the kid in the
courts because it will be too late already, but instead they should start shaping the kid since the
beginning starting from the classroom, to prevent them from doing negative activities. I agree
with the statement, because if teachers guide and educate their students well of the
consequences that might happen to them, the chance that the kid involves in such activities is
lesser.
QUESTION 2:
The teaching approach that describes Mrs. Campbell’s statement is teacher centered or also
known as the authoritarian teacher where teacher are very strict, all authority and decision
making is on the teacher, and students are seen as empty vessel. I disagree with the statement
made by her because a brighter future starts with education. If we did not get education, then
they will not know what discipline is all about. The reason I disagree is that, firstly, it helps a
person by opening up new opportunities for them. It helps build one’s personality because what
we learn, we become. Secondly, education helps us to distinguish between what is reasonable
and unreasonable. Therefore, they deserve education and deserve to be treated equally.

QUESTION 3:
Ms. Gruwell is the first teacher to show trust and respect for the ‘at risk’ students at Wilson High
by simply give her respect to the ‘at risk’ students and make them feel like they are trusted. She
said that, “to earn respect you have to give it.” Some student are resistant to trust her because,
they may feel that she is the same with other teacher that they have bad experience with.
Besides, they are being treated unfairly y by the teachers, where teachers neglect them, cruel
towards them, low expectation and prejudice. Thus, gaining the students’ trust is difficult for her.
The part where played the line game is the first time that she gained trust of her students. The
fact that the effort she made to gain students’ interest and trust have opened the students’ heart
to trust her.
QUESTION 4:
Students only trust their peers from their own ethnic or racial group because of they have been
experience too much of violence done by other race or ethnic to them since their childhood. For
example, they have seen murdering scene in front of them. Apart from that, their parents
discourage them from getting to know each other that are unlike them because of they have
experience more of the violence and hatred. In addition, these students were living in a gang
culture where it is based on race, ethnicity and neighborhood and labelling of each ethnic has
become their habit. Thus to show loyalty to their race or ethnic, they cannot mix or mingle with
each other.
QUESTION 5:
Writing helps them to express their self. It has given them the chance to tell their feeling through
writing so that their emotion is not trapped within themselves that is screwing them all this time.
It helps them to free their thought s of what they cannot tell others because of the fears of
getting judge without knowing the true story behind it. Apart from that, writing the journals has
transformed the kid’s lives a lot. Slowly, they are starting to realize the most important and
precious things in life as well as finding the right path to take them to success and starting to
gain their lives back.

QUESTION 6:
My role model and biggest motivator in life is my parent because I have seen their hardship in
bringing me to have a good education. Although they did not push me because they know that
too high expectation on their child will lead to consequences, but deep down I know what their
expectations are towards me. Their hardship and efforts to overcome great personal challenges
has led me to do my best and that I have learned many important lessons from them. Apart from
that, the way they lead, their selflessness and the way they had instilled me with good and solid
valued is what kept me motivated and inspired.
QUESTION 7:
My goal is to become an art educator in the future. In order to attain my goal, I have to have a
decent planning and preparation in my knowledge, communication, images and broad skills that
are needed to become an educator. Similar to Ms. Gruwell, I may have hardship in dealing with
the classroom management, because of the classroom scenario here. Apart from that, I might
have adversity in getting a position because of the vacancy is lesser, thus in the meantime while
waiting, I will practice more on enhancing my art skills, sell artworks to gain financial and help
my parents as they have brought me to where I am now.
