1.- Description and characteristics

Fotoba Digitrim is a new and innovative Automatic Cutting System for multiple digital images.
Digitrim reads and uses positioning marks, that any digital paper writer can produce, to cut and
self align obtaining perfectly square trimmed pictures.

Characteristics:

- Fully Automatic.
- Maximum cutting width 157.5 cm. / 62 in.
- Minimum cutting width 20 cm./ 8 in
- Programmable double cut to remove cut indication mark between prints.
- Automatic smart learning and memory for different cut mark detection.
- Accuracy ± 0.1 mm
- Self sharpening rotary blade
- Maximum cutting thickness 0.5 mm (0.020in)
- 80mt. roll accessory (optional)

The noise level emission is lower than 70db (A).

Digitrim is a cutting device that can be used in three different ways:

- Rolls cutting (with the ad of the optional roll accessory)

- Sheet cutting
- Trimming

One of the main advantages of Digitrim, is that the operator can introduce the paper (that has
aligning marks as described in this instruction book) in the cutter without any particular care of
angle of introduction and positioning.
Pressing the foot switch or the “Start” Key, the cutter will automatically advance and cut the paper
perfectly aligned without mistakes.
While Digitrim is feeding the paper its scanning device looks for the mark and when recognized, it
detects and compensates the angle of introduction.

The picture hereafter is showing a picture with a mark detected by our system.

Note that the mark must follow the complete side of the picture so that it is detected even if
inserted without guide or alignments.

digitrim 62 instruction book

The following picture shows a Digitrim paper introduction plane reading area reference lines. The
optical scanning device are distant from each other to allow cutting sheets from 20 and 157 cm (8
to 62in). To be detected, the mark must cover the optical scanning sensors area to satisfy the
specifications required, on both the sensors.

area inside the optical

scanning sensors

In case your printing device does not provide automatic marking, these have to be added by
software before printing with the following directions:

The mark must be a sequence of white/black/white/black/white. (two black lines in a white border)
Digitrim can store 5 different marks and, as soon as switched on, it will automatically set itself on
the mark memorized in channel 1 and on the last double cut setting so that, if you will have a
standard mark for all your job, the cutter operator will not need to set the machine.

The minimum sizes of your marks are: The recommended sizes are:

0,4mm/.016in 0,8mm /.032in.

0,4mm/.016in 0,8mm /.032in.

0,8mm /.032in. 0,5.mm /.020in. 0,8.mm /.032in. 1,2mm/.047in 0,6.mm /.024in. 1,2mm/.047in

NOTE: The machine will accept only a sequence of white/black/white/black/white.

There are no restrictions to the mark’s dimensions except that the complete sequence should not
be longer than a total length of 1 cm (0,4 in) and the minimum thickness of each line should be no
shorter of 0,4mm ( .016in).

digitrim 62 instruction book

Not all the digital paper writers provide automatically the cropping of the cut marks required by our
system.

For those printing devices that do not provide the automatic setting of Digitrim cut marks, Fotoba
provides with each product Trim Manager, a RIP software quick and easy to use, that nests, crops,
clones and automatically paginate different images on the same web.
Available on the market there are various “Fotoba Cut Marks” compatible software packages as
Onyx PosterShop™, ColorGate Rips™, Caldera™, etc..

The complete TrimManger software and an up to date list of Fotoba Cut Marks compatible Rips is
available on www.fotoba.com.

To trim each single picture, the operator will introduce the sheet first in one way than, the
obtained strips of images, rotated of 90°.

3.2.- Scanning a mark

To scan a mark Digitrim requires a mark sample printed on white paper of minimum 20 x 30 cm.
(8 x 10 in) as indicated in the following drawing.
NOTE: In any case before the mark, to be scanned, there must be always white paper for at least
10 cm. (4 in).

WAY TO INSERT PAPER

1.- Insert the sample mark under the feeding rollers and press the “Scan” push button.

2.- The machine will feed back and forward the paper. The display will indicate “ Scanning.....”

3.- The machine will then stop and the display will indicate “ Mark detected ! ”

In any case, before start cutting, run some test (press “Test” , push button repeatedly) to verify
that cutter stops in the right position every cut mark.

NOTE: In case the scanning has not been completed successfully the display will show the
reading error. In this case repeat the operation until successful. Eventually use different
mark sample.

3.4.- Double cut

In order to remove the positioning marks, the machine has the possibility to cut twice, before and
after the mark.
If this function is set to zero, the machine will produce a single cut only in the middle between the
two black lines.
The maximum width of the double cut is 2cm (0,8 in). Each increment is 0,5 mm ( 2/10th in.)

NOTE: The machine, as soon as switched on, recalls the last settings automatically.

To change setting:

1.- Press “D/Cut” key. The display will indicate the last setting “ Dcut ###”

display will indicate the selection.

3.- Press the “ Ent.” key (Enter). The double cut is now active.

3.5.- Double cut centering

Depending on job or paper writer there might be the need of centering the double cut in respect to
the marks. In fact the two black lines might not be perfectly centered on the white and therefore the
cuts provided by the double cut could not be exactly where needed.
The machine default setting provides to move the marks automatically of 70mm. which
corresponds to the distance between the reading point and the cutting line. This measure can be
decreased down to 50 mm. or increased up to 90 mm.

To change setting:

1.- Press “D/Cct” key. The display will indicate the last setting (mm) “ DCcent ###”

3.6.- Marks direction setting

Using a mark generated by two identical lines would exclude the need of this function but,
depending on the picture, there might be the need to make it of different thickness lines.

In this case, by scanning the mark in one way and inserting the paper on the opposite way, the
machine would not recognize the mark. While it is not possible to look for the mirroring of the mark
automatically, the machine provides the possibility to compare the mark for its straight version (as
scanned) or for the reverse one.

When in need to cut strips of images smaller than the Double Cut Centering (main offset= distance
between reading and cutting points), the cutter would jump one mark every image being impossible
to keep in memory two set of information at time. The “Resync” function will enable the cutter to
retrieve the paper after each cut and re start automatically allowing the automatic cutting of very
narrow strips.

To set the function on:

1.- Press and hold the “Trim” key until the display will indicate “Resync enabled ”.
To return to the previous setting press again the “Trim” key. The display will indicate “Function

3.10.- End of Paper sensor & Auto Start selection

The machine has a sensor that detects the presence of paper positioned in the center just before
the pinch rollers.
The sensor has been introduced to bring back automatically the last print. If a transparency is feed
in the machine the sensor would read the transparency as end of paper and it would not be
possible to use the machine. In this case it is possible to exclude the sensor.
The sensor can be used as Auto Start (only with regular opaque paper) so that the machine will
start cutting as soon as the paper will be introduced avoiding the operator to press the footswitch
or the “Start” key for each row of pictures.

This sensor has three different settings.

To change setting:

1.- Press the “E/P” key. The display will indicate last setting
2.- By pressing the “ Ï Ð “ keys select the following settings
