1. The Department of Education (DepEd) – District of San Antonio shall conduct the
2019 District Science and Technology Fair with the theme: “Reinventing the Future:
Advancing the Communities Through Science, Technology and Innovations”, at San
Antonio Central School, San Antonio, Nueva Ecija on October 16, 2019, at 1 o’clock in
the afternoon.

2. Science Fair is a series of activities that aims to select the best contestants
inclined to Science activities and to promote excellence in Science through
competition, camaraderie, and sportsmanship.

3. The participants in the different categories are as follows:

a. Science Quiz 1 participant/ grade (Grades III-VI)
b. SCI ART 1 participant/ school (Open to
Grades III-VI)
c. Odyssey of the Mind 1 participant (Grade VI)
d. ROBOTECH: (Sumobot, Line Tracingbot, Maximum of 4 entries/school
Fire Fighting Robot, Innovative Robot
e. Science Action Research 1 teacher-participant/ school
f. Improvisation of Science Equipment 1 teacher-participant/ school
g. Innovation of Science Instructional Aids 1 teacher-participant/ school

4. No registration fee shall be charged, however, pupil-participants are requested

to bring their own provisions.

5. Appended to this Memorandum are the following:

6. The utmost cooperation of every Science chair/teacher is enjoined for the

Contest Rules and Mechanics

A. Science Quiz
1. Each School shall have four (4) participants (one per grade level)
2. The coverage of the test shall be from first to fourth grading of the K to 12
Curriculum.
3. Test papers will be distributed among the participants consisting of 57
questions which have been prepared by the Science teachers of each
school.
4. Pupil-Participants shall be given 70 minutes to answer the questions.
5. A separate answer sheet will be provided wherein pupil-participant is
required to shade the letter of the correct answer.
6. In case of tie, the Quiz Master will give three questions to the participants
with the same Score with out any choices. The highest scorer will be
declared as the winner.
7. Top 5 scorers per grade level will be recognized and the top 1 scorer will
be declared as champion and will represent the district in the division
science and technology fair.

B. SCI ART
1. Each School shall have one (1) participant (open to grades III-VI)
2. The contest will revolve around the theme
3. The medium for visual artistry shall be oil pastel only.
4. The required base paper to be used during the contest is illustration board
(18x 24 inches)
5. Each participant will bring their own materials during the contest and are
not allowed to borrow from other participants
6. The time allotment for the duration of the contest is 1 ½ hours. Participants
may submit his/her output earlier that the required time allotment given.
7. An oral defense is given a time allotment of 5 minutes for the selected top
10 participants
8. The criteria for judging are as follows:
Originality of the Idea 30%
Relevance to the theme 30%
Oral Defense 20%
Overall impact 20%

9. Top 5 scorers per grade level will be recognized and the top 1 scorer will
be declared as champion and will represent the district in the division
science and technology fair.
10. The decision of the board of judges is final.

C. Odyssey of the Mind

1. The contest is a hands-on-minds-on activity where each contestant will
have to answer, perform a science activity following specific directions
that requires cognitive, psychomotor skills and fluency in written
communications of science ideas and concepts.
2. Each contestant will have to go through 4 learning stations (LSI-LS4). Each
LS has learning packet &directions to follow,
3. The board of judges will act as evaluators of the learning outcome.

4. Performance in each LS is under pressure and requires time allotment.

Communication skills, speed, accuracy and correctness of activity results
called are being assessed.
5. The hands-on-minds-on activities will focus on the following content
standards:
 Living things and their environment
 Matter
 Force Motion and Energy
 Earth and Space
6. A performance Rubric will be used to rate the performance of each
contestant in every learning station.
7. Top 5 scorers will be recognized and the top 1 scorer will be declared as
champion and will represent the district in the division science and
technology fair.
8. The decision of the board of judges is final.

D. Robotech
1. The competition is divided into different categories such as:
 Sumobot - this category enables the participants to design a robot
that will locate and knock its opponent right out of the ring while
detecting the outside circle should an escape move be necessary.
There will be 2 weight categories 1kg and 3kg which measures 20cm
by 20 cm.
 Line Tracingbot - this category aims to create robot that can be able
to detect particular line and keep following it. There will be a common
platform provided to the participant to determine which robot will
finish the task at the shortest time. The prescribed platform will be sent
through science group chat.
 Firefighting Robot - this is a robotics game where a robot must
autonomously navigate through a mock home with multiple rooms
and with a candle randomly placed in one of the rooms, simulating a
house on fire. The robot needs to find the candle and put it out,
paving the way for a house-hold robot which would find and
extinguish small home fires before they can engulf the house. The main
challenge of this contest is to build an autononous computer-
controlled robot that can find its way through an arena that represents
a model house, find a lit candle that represents a fire in the house, and
extinguish the fire in the shortest time. This task simulates the real-world
operation of an autonomous robot performing a fire protection
function in a real house. The goal of the contest is to advance robot
technology and knowledge while using robotics as an educational
tool.
 Innovative Robot - this category is one that allows teams to innovate,
design and build their robots according to the current year THEME. A
sample is Saving the Rivers where teams are to create innovative robot
designs to be able to clean, clear, or even recycle the waste that is
causing the pollution in our rivers today. There are no strict rules for this
category but mainly the judging criteria for the robots. A special panel
of judges expert in the topic will be selected by the WRG committee
especially for this category. Some judging criteria include design,
efficiency, technical competency, aesthetics, practicality.

E. Science Action Research (Teacher’s Category)

1. Each school shall have one participant.
2. The research is classroom or school-based which results have been utilized to
improve pupil/teacher/school performance
3. Paper presenters are required to submit 3 hard copies of the research paper
on the day of contest.The write-up shall be prepared on A4 size bond paper,
Time New Roman font type, font size 12 and double spaced
4. Oral presentation of the conceptualization, methodology used in the study,
results and discussion has a maximun of 5 minutes only.
5. The criteria for judging are as follows:
Significance/relevance 30%
(Improvement to Science Curriculum, Instruction etc.)
Research Skills (Methods & Processes) 30%
Utilization 20%
Oral Presentation Skills 20%
100%
6. The decision of the board of judges is final.

F. Improvisation of Science Equipment (Teacher’s Category)

1. Each school shall have one participant
2. The write-up shall be prepared on A4 size bond paper, Time New Roman font
type, font size 12 and double spaced and shall be submitted in three copies
during the contest.
3. The improvised science equipment shall be presented before the Panel of
Judges.
4. Presentation of the functionality and usage shall last for 5 minutes.
5. The improvised science equipment MUST show the following:
a. Available local resources are used to perform experiments.
b. Cheaper products to stimulate experiments (Production Cost)
c. Scientific principles involved/Concepts underlying the device
d. Important life skills/to be developed in the learners
e. Quality of the science equipment
f. Can be replicated and shared to other teachers
6. The criteria for judging are as follows:
Effectiveness and usability 30%
Originality/creativity/innovativeness 30%
Stability 20%
Adaptability 20%

7. The decision of the board of judges is final.

G. Innovation of Science Instructional Aids (Teacher’s Category)

1. Each school shall have one participant
2. The write-up shall be prepared on A4 size bond paper, Time New Roman font
type, font size 12 and double spaced and shall be submitted in three copies
during the contest.
3. The innovation shall be presented before the Panel of Judges.
4. Presentation of its usage shall last for 5 minutes and 5 minutes for
questions/inquiries, /validation from the Panel of Judges.
5. A model of the innovative instructional material shall be displayed during the
contest and the write-up shall be submitted in three copies for the review by
the Judges.

6. The innovative instructional material MUST show the following:

a. Instructional benefits of the innovation. Positive outcomes and
difficulties of what learners might encounter when material is used in
instruction.
b. Next-text based activity implemented using the material.
c. Learners can get well-engaged with the material
d. Materials has linkage with current science concepts and principles
e. Clarity of innovation thru language used for learners’ level of
understanding
f. IM ties directly to learning to learning outcomes and learning of
experiences of students
g. Clear articulation to learners the purpose of the innovative IM
7. The criteria for judging are as follows:
Effectiveness and Usability 40%
Originality/ creativity/ innovativeness 40%
Stability 20%
