Chapter 1
The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

The large difference between the parenting styles of a Generation X parent and a

Generation Y, also known as a millennial parent has been an ongoing issue especially

here in the Philippines. Because as what Jason Dorsey, a speaker from TEDx Talks said,

“Parenting is the greatest trend that influences behavior across generations”. Since the

parenting styles of both the Generation X parent and a Generation Y parent have various

differences, therefore it might also affect the children’s growth and development.

Generation X parents or the parents born within the range of 1960’s to early

1980’s and Generation Y parents or the parents born within the range of late 1980’s to

early 2000’s (millennial) greatly differ from each other. The attitudes of the two

generations towards parenting changed because of factors to consider like technological

advancements and cultural shifts.

Generation Y or millennial parents are influenced greatly by the technologies of

today. Based on an article from New York Times, most of them (Generation Y) are

turning to the internet (e.g. Google, chat rooms etc.) for parenting advices that helps them

become too complacent in their parenting skills. “Millennial themselves rely on digital

devices and the internet to provide them with the information in parenting and raising

kids tend to change throughout the generations because of cultural climates change
throughout periods of time” (Global News, 2018). Millennial parents have the tendency

to be too forgiving, validating and too friendly towards their children. (S. Urman, 2016)

But, regardless of Generation Y parents’ more involvement from family members

in raising their child, as well as the ease of access of advices from the internet, they are

showing a desire for more rest and relaxation. (N. Winston, 2018)

“Devices have given us freedom to be more social with our kids, but it’s also made

it so much harder to engage with them when we need to,” a mother confessed.

Generation Y are also more likely to raise their children in poverty and are more

likely to struggle financially, according to a report by Young Invincibles.

Generation X on the other hand, tend to stick to traditional parenting practices

wherein they apply what they think their parents did right and what they should have

done better in raising their children, which is also known as the helicopter parenting.

According to Carolyn Daitch, Ph. D., director of the Center for the Treatment of Anxiety

Disorder and the author of Anxiety Disorders: The Go-To Guide, helicopter parenting

refers to “a style of parents who are over focused on their children,” they typically take

too much responsibility for their children’s experiences and specifically their successes or

failures,” she added. Gen X’ers would rather apply what they experienced from their

moms and dads and will use the same strategies to their children.

They are more violent compared to the Generation Y parents which affect the

behavior of the child. Harsh discipline, (spanking, threatening, yelling, screaming in

response to misbehavior) contributes higher levels of child externalizing behavior by

promoting norms supportive of violence or aggression (Catalano & Hawkings, 1996)

Parenting has changed over the decades in response to a rapidly evolving world.

(N. Winston, 2018) The nature of parents of any generation is to raise their children in a

way that they think is right for them to be known as the perfect parents when in fact

there’s none. Whether the parent is a Gen X’er or a Millennial, it’s not “who’s-better-

who” because every generation tends to change their parenting styles as time changes,

and aside from their differences, there’s a thing that parents in any generation will surely

agree on; no matter how exhausting it is to raise their children, they will always love

them no matter what.
