The document discusses a photo shoot experimenting with manipulating paper to create abstract images focusing on shadows and contrast. It also discusses the inspiration and process behind the shoot.

The aim of the photo shoot was to take photos of manipulated paper that enhance shadows and color contrast.

The photographer took inspiration from Jerry Reed and James Welling, interpreting their work in different ways such as creating illusions of landscapes using close-up images of paper.

Research and Inspiration

Jerry Reed

Jerry Reed is largely influenced by

both Rössler and Bruguière. People
say that his analytical approach to
his work reflects his early career
in science.

Paper works is a series made up of

26 images that Reed worked on for 3
years. He shot in a studio, using
2D art paper "giving them edge and
volume, then lit them
dramatically... to emphasis their
3D forms."

His photographs seem to rely largely on shadows, light and contrast, giving a
two-toned effect. The monotone composition creates a simple yet effective
illusion.

James Welling
Wellings images entitled 'Abstract
Photographs' and do resemble paper
however this made up of phyllo
pastry dough.

The artist explains: "A lot of my

work is intuitive and comes from
just trying different things. With
the money from the sale of my first
aluminum foil photograph, I bought
a wooden 8-by-10 camera and started
photographing draped cloth. At the
same time I was also photographing
crumpled shards of dry phyllo
dough. Without much premeditation, I combined the two, and sprinkled dough on
the draped cloth. Against the dark fabric, the dough suggested, perhaps, torn
book pages from the diary I’d photographed, or geological debris fallen from
above."

The images taken by Welling create a strange and abstract composition and
with different angles can be interpreted in different ways.

Shoot Plan
: This shoot will take place in a controlled dark environment. I will not
have access to a studio so I am going to do this shoot at night to attempt
the best possible results.
: I am going to manipulate the paper by folding, scrunching and ripping it.
I intend to create different illusions using the manipulation of paper.
: I am planning to use a ring light at its brightest white setting to create
harsh lighting situations in order to create the shadows and contrast
featured in the images of the artists I researched.
: I will not need any models but I will need a few pieces of plain white
paper to manipulate and photograph.
: A macro lens would be the best to use in order to focus on the detail but
I am going to experiment with just zooming in as well as this. I will also
experiment with the flash on my camera and how it effects the environment
and the way the images appear.

Edits
: To edit this photo I cropped the top of
the image out of the photo so only the
paper was in the shot, I then adjusted
the levels to highlight the shadows in
the crease of the paper. This added to
the illusion of cliffs and mountains that
I attempted to create. The depth of field
within the image creates a nice effect
and highlights the detail in the photo. I
used a macro lens to take this. I used a
bright torchlight and held it above at an
angle in order to create the shadows.

: This photograph did have a lot of space around

the main focus of the image and I wanted the
detail and texture of the paper to be visible.
After cropping the image turned the contrast up
slightly then adjusted the levels to make the
darker areas darker. The greyscale within the
image is very wide showing black and white in the
photograph. This was one way that I experimented
with in a way to present plain white paper.
Overall I like how this image has come out.
: This photograph shows a clear and
crisp image of the manipulated paper
and its shadow. I think it works well
that the background is black even
though that is where the light comes
from. The larger shadow creates an
illusion that the shape is bigger
than it seems. To edit this I only
changed the levels in order to make
shadows darker and more defined.

: I wanted this photos darkness to engulf

the paper shape. To make this happen I
adjusted the levels. I also cropped the
top and bottom of the photo, this made the
image apply to the rule of thirds because
the focus is on the edge of the middle and
right third. The angle I took the photo
makes the spiral seem almost like it is
coming towards you. Overall this creates a
nice effect.

Shoot Analysis
: The aim of this shoot was to take photos of paper manipulated in a way that
enhances shadows and colour contrast. Shoot did go to plan in the sense that I have
represented high contrast. I enjoyed experimenting with shadows within my images as
well as angles and magnification. In this mini project I used a macro lens in order
to gain the crisp effect in the photos.
: This shoot took inspiration from Jerry Reed and James Welling, I took these
artists and interpreted in a different way to create these images. James Wellings
work used crushed paper from a birds eye view, however I thought it could work well
if I created the illusions of mountains and cliff edges using a close up image. I
felt this showed my own interpretation of his work. Jerry Reeds photographs
incorporated shadows and drastic contrast. Some of my photos had high contrast but
most showed experimented with shadows, and angles that the light held at could
change the size of the shadows.
: My favourite photo from this shoot was the image that shows a large shadow
because it has a wide range grey scale and summarised my personal interpretation of
this small project.
: From this I have learnt to research more into the meaning of the topic in order
to understand my images in more depth.
