The document is a photography assignment by Saba Zamani based on the theme of Beauty and the Beast. It includes 12 photos exploring elements and principles of design, with each photo accompanied by a caption explaining how it relates to the theme. Saba took the photos using props and compositions to represent major plot points and characters from the movie, such as the rose, household items, and colors. She explains her creative process, which involved planning how to express her theme through the elements, taking many test photos with different angles and lighting, and then cropping and editing the final selected photos.

Elements
and Principles Of Design Unit 1 Photography Assignment Saba Zamani Theme – Beauty and the Beast
I based my photos after the
1991 movie and its major plot points. This includes the rose which tells how much time the beast has left to fall in love, the palace workers which became household items, and some of the characters wardrobe colours. Line The Cell That Holds Them This photo expresses the element of design line through the thin black bars, which draw your eyes to the right of the photo. This also represents my theme because Belle and her father are thrown in the prince’s dungeon. The angle of this photo along with the shadows and bars can give a feeling of being stuck or trapped. The rule of thirds is also used in this image. Colour Enchanted This photo represents my theme because of the rose, which is a plot point, and yellow flowers, which is a reference to Belle’s ball gown. This picture has three main colors, pink, yellow, and green. This provide analogous colors, complimentary colours, and warm colours. The pink and yellow provide a calm aesthetic as they are both warm, while the green and yellow give a soothing effect, along with the fact that the rule of thirds was used. The green is also more pronounced as the pink provides contrast. Space Tick Tok This photo displays my theme through Cogsworth, the clock from the movie. It also demonstrates space because there is a clear foreground and background. There is an uneven amount of positive and negative space in this photo, making the clock stand out even more and providing a bit of tensions. Shape The Glass Story
This photo resembles the painted glass at the
start of the movie, which is used to give a summary of the prince’s life, along with the roses. This image is an example of an interesting shape and the object itself, along with the middle of its design both provide different formations. This draws our eyes to the middle of the photo. Form Tale as Old as Time
This photo is a reference to Mrs. Potts
from the movie and is an example of form. The angle at which it is taken captures shadows, making the object look even more 3 dimensional. You can also see that light is hitting it from directly above and that the image is black and white, to create even more shadows. Texture Transformed
This represents the Beast’s Fur and how a
recurring colour in the movie is blue. The texture is soft and fluffy, whilst still free and wild looking. I think the angle of the photo emphasizes this because the lighting accentuates each strand. It provides a free and rough feeling to the photo Unity Be Our Guest
The cups represent the palace workers
from the movie who were turned into plates and cups. This photo displays unity because each cup is identical in colour, size, and shape, providing a similar aesthetic. This gives the picture a sense of peacefulness. Balance The Curse
This represents my theme through the
palace workers who were cursed into household items and it provides asymmetrical balance. The object closer to the camera is bigger and looks heavy, while the 3 objects farther from the camera look light. They balance each other and provide the picture with a calm and stable feel. Pattern Glass Rose
This photo resembles the stained glass
from the beginning of the movie and the rose, while still displaying pattern. There are different shapes like circles and cylinders. The pattern has identical colours, shapes, and sizes for each section, showcasing repetition. This draws your eyes to the photo and enhances other elements such as colour or shape. Movement Wildfire
This photo represents when the towns
people went to slay the beast, they brought flames in hopes of burning down his castle. The lines and curves give the illusion of movement as our eyes follow them. This attracts our eyes to the image and makes it stand out. Emphasis Fire and Water
This photo represents how the two of the
main colours in the movie are red and blue, and the title displays how they are total opposites. The red plate is a warm colour and big, while the blue plate is cool and small. Warms and larger objects tend dominate in photographs. So by placing these beside each other, your eyes are drawn to the red plate and it is enhanced. Contrast Light in the Dark
This photo represents chip from the movie,
and it displays contrast through the dark background and light main object. The bright white and dark background are opposite and therefore they enhance each other, creating drama and visual interest. Creative Process Challenging and Inspiring For this assignment, our teacher challenged us to take 12 photos of the elements and principles of design based around a theme. Once I chose my theme, which was the fairytale Beauty and the Beast, I could start to think of how I wanted my theme to be expressed in the photos. I chose three stimuluses for my theme which were the household items that came to life, the rose, and the main colours of the movie: blue, yellow, and red. By using these stimuluses, I was able to brainstorm ways I could express the elements and principles whilst using my Creative Process theme. One example of this is expressing the element of design colour with a pink rose and yellow flowers. The rose that came Imagining and to mind in the last stage of the creative process would help me display my theme and provide my photo with a very vibrant Generating colour pallet. Yellow would represent belle’s dress and provide my picture with a warm feel. I brainstormed like this before taking all 12 of my photo Once I had decided my theme and how I was going to express the elements and Creative Process principles, I could start taking my photos. I started to think of how and where I was going to take my photos. For most of my photos I wanted a basic background so Planning and that the focus could really stand out and the element or principle could be clear. I also used the compositional technique rule of thirds to make my photos aesthetically pleasing. In the photos on this slide you can see the difference the Focusing angle and composition makes. I also wanted my props to be vibrant to make them stand out against the basic backgrounds I was choosing. Creative Process Exploring or Experimenting When trying to actually take my photos, I tried to never take a photo of my objects head on. This is very basic looking, and I wanted my props to stand out. I wanted all my photos to be taken at an angle so they were interesting to look at and expressed their element or principle properly. I took about 8-12 photos before choosing the one I wanted to put in my slides. I tried flipping my props over, putting them on their sides, and taking photos in the dark with a flashlight. When taking my sample photos I didn’t want any of them to be straight on Creative Process because this can look awkward. I tried to have the rule of thirds in all my photos to enhance their quality. I took over 8 photos for each element and principle to be Producing Preliminary able to compare them and see if it was my best work. I also strived to take clear photos and have my focus stand out against my backgrounds. The photos I Work included show the difference taking your straight on can make. Creative Process Revising & Refining
For this last step, once I had clear and
interesting photos, I cropped and edited them to enhance the element or principle of design they were showcasing. For example, I cropped most of my photos to push main objects even further into the cross section or cut out my feet or hands if they appeared in the photos. I also added filters to enhance colour, light, and quality. In my two blue photos you can see the filter enhances the colour and lighting, while the cropping helps with the rule of thirds. In my flower photos, I turned the photo and cropped it to make it clearer and put it in the cross section.
