Task 1 Paper

Research
With this task, I wanted to approach it from a different
perspective. The task of photographing 'paper' can lead the
mind to think in numerous places but mine went straight to
fire and burning newspaper.
After looking through some images, I was almost instantly
drawn to the effect I would be able to create by using fire,
however with capturing fire there were some necessary
precautions I had to take;
◦ I would need to beware of the surroundings and do it in a
very open space
◦ Have some sort of assistance or guidance
◦ Make sure to have a fire extinguisher or something to
prevent any big fires
SHOOT
PLAN

I liked this image because
it's very clear, has some of
the writing on the
newspaper in the image
and shows the fire
illuminating the paper.
With this image, I was
really drawn to the dark
surrounding which is
obstructed by the
newspaper which is on fire
which makes for
an ominous effect. I also
like the use of in between
depth of field which allows
the piece of newspaper on
the right more in focus
than the piece on the left
side.

I chose this image because I liked
how the background is blurred
which forces the viewer to focus on
what's in the foreground. The fire
in this image isn't the clearest,
however, the font and subtitle seen
on the newspaper is clear and cam
be read.
I mainly really like the sunset in
the background, this changes the
feel of this image and gives it a
warmer feel. I have also
used compositional techniques in
this image as the paper is coming
from the top left-hand corner and
into the frame.

With this image, I like how the
fire appears to be spreading
across the paper. The colour
tones in the image are very
warm as the natural lighting of
the fire highlights and
brightens the surroundings.
I also really like the
composition of this image as
my subject is not completely in
frame but coming out from the
left-hand side.

I was drawn to the amount of
detail seen in this image. The
camera setting used really
captured the vibrancy of the
flames. I also like how I managed
to capture the flame coming out of
the frame which reinforces the
aggressiveness and fury of the
flame.
I like the warm tones created by
the fire itself which is highlighting
the newspaper and shadowing the
areas not on fire which creates a
nice, pleasant contrast
Evaluation
I personally really enjoyed this shoot, I enjoyed working with fire and changing a simple task and
making it more exciting. This was fairly easy to execute and I will definitely try out this genre of
photography again in the future. I feel like I followed my research and shoot plan effectively and
composed some images that have come out in the way I intended them to.
With that being said, I played around with different photography and compositional techniques
in this shoot and with my images and got a feel for something new that I have not tried before. I
don't think that I could have changed anything as the outcome came out exactly how I had
envisioned, so I am rather content with this shoot.
One thing I did in this shoot was take a lot of images, however, when looking through my contact
sheets you can see the evalution of my images and the experimenting I did with my camera to see
what worked best. There were a few images that I crossed which came out too over exposed, but
th majority of them came out well and as planned such as the ones I chose.
