 Write a report based on an experiment.
 Gain hands-on practice regarding different research methods within the domain of
cognitive psychology.
Assignment

Dear Students,

Your task is to conduct a mini interview-based study to check the effects of instruction and
practice on automatic versus effortful tasks and write a report on it.

Task One: Experiment

Research Question:

Do the non-automatic tasks require instructions and practice or not?

Prove it with the help of a study.

Sample:

Take five volunteers from your family/surroundings and brief them the purpose of study in
simple words.

Instructions:
 First of all brief your participants about the experiment.
 Ask the participants to enlist 10 tasks which require instructions and practice e.g. playing
guitar as a beginner.
 After this, ask the participants to enlist 10 tasks which do not require instruction and
practice e.g. brushing teeth.
 Give ample time to the participants and then collect the sheets from the participants.
 Observe the time taken by participants to enlist automatic and non-automatic tasks.
 After collecting the data from the participants, categorize the given 20 tasks of each
participant into each of the following categories;
1. Automatic tasks
2. Non-automatic tasks.
 Do not repeat the names of tasks that have been given by more than one participant. Just
mention that task once in your table.
 You are also required to attach the original lists of tasks given by each participant in your
assignment file in addition to your own table.

Task Two: Report Writing

Instructions:

Your report should consist of the following parts:

Introduction (should not exceed 200 words) (2)

In this section, you will describe automatic and non-automatic tasks and how you perform in
daily life tasks.

Procedure (3)

In this section, you will describe how you carried out the entire study? How you approached the
participants and which instructions were given to the participants?

Table formulation (10)

In this section, you have to formulate a table showing proper categorization of the data received.
Marks will be given on the basis of correct categorization.

You may use the following tabular format:
