A Detailed Lesson Plan in
Computer Systems Servicing NC II
(TVL Track)
I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. Recognize the importance and functions of straight through cable.
b. Enumerate the procedure in creating straight through cable.
c. Perform the procedure in creating straight through cable.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Computer Networking: Creating Straight-through Cable
Materials: Colored paper, UTP cable, LAN tester, RJ45 connector, wire stripper, crimping
tool, Laptop, visual aid

Method: 4A’s Teaching Approach

III. Procedures
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES
1. Daily Routine
Let us all stand and pray (Everybody will stand and pray)

2. Greetings
Good morning class! Good morning, ma’am.

You may now take your seats Thank you, ma’am.

3. Checking of Attendance
Who is absent, attendance officer? Nobody ma’am.

Great! I am glad that everyone is present today.

4. Review of the past lesson

Let us recall our previous lesson. Last meeting,
we have discussed the different tools, materials,
devices and equipment needed in networking.

Can you give me some examples of these Ma’am, we used Switch when
devices? And its function? connecting two or more
computers.

Very good! Another example? We also have Patch Panel used

to connect wide area networks,
ma’am.

How about the tools and materials needed in (Student’s varied response)
splicing and creating LAN Cables?

Very good!
B. DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES
1. Activity
Before we proceed to our discussion, let’s have
a short game, do you like it?
So, last time I told you to searched and
memorized the color combination for LAN
Cabling.

MECHANICS
1. The teacher will give each student a colored
paper similar to LAN Cable’s color (Game Proper)
combination.
2. The teacher will say what color combination
the students will arrange. (T568A or T568B)
3. The students will find and create a group
according to what color combination the
teacher will say.
4. The first group to arranged will be the
winner.

Is it clear? Yes, ma’am!

Class what did you noticed about our activity a Ma’am arrangement of color
while ago? coding in Straight-through
cable.

Very Good! And what do you think is our topic Creating Straight-through
for today? cable, ma’am.

Very Good!

2. Analysis

Today, we will be discussing about

LAN/ethernet cabling. Particularly, the straight-
through cabling. We will also be discussing
when to use and how to create a straight-
through cable.
Student will read definition.
Ethernet/ LAN Cabling – the process of
creating cable used to create a network that
interconnects computers and other network
devices.

Alright, Ethernet/LAN cabling is the process of

creating cables used to connect a network. Now,
there are two types of Ethernet/LAN cables, and
what are these?

Types of Ethernet/LAN Cables

1. Straight through cable
2. Crossover cable

The first one is straight-through cable and the

other is the crossover cable. But for this session,
we will be focusing on the straight-through
cable.
Student will read definition.
So, what is a straight-through cable?
Straight-through cable – a type of twisted pair
cable that is used in local area networks to
connect a computer to a network hub such as
router.

The teacher will give examples of the instances

that a straight through cable will be used.

Class, these are the connections that use

straight-through cable.

1. Switch to PC
2. Switch to Router
3. Switch to Server
4. Hub to PC Straight-through cables are
5. Hub to Server used to connect different
devices.
Now, class from these examples, what have you
observed?

Very good!

Rule of Thumb:
We use straight-through cable when connecting
two different devices.

Alright, you already know when to use straight-

through cable. The next thing is, how do you
create a straight-through cable?

Now, when terminating or splicing a straight-

through cable we have to follow industry
standards. There are two color combination
standards used in creating straight-through
cable. The first is the T568A and the other one is Yes ma’am.
the T568B color combination. So, for instance, if
we use T568A on one side of the cable we also
use the same code on the other side. Did you get
it?

Color Codes for Terminating a Straight-

through Cable
T568A T568B
White/Green White/Orange
Green Orange
White/Orange White/Green
Blue Blue
White/Blue White/Blue
Orange Green
White/Brown White/Brown
Brown Brown

However, it is a common practice in the industry

that the T568B color code is used for straight-
through cables. Which means, we will be using
the T568B in creating our straight-through Yes ma’am.
cable, although, T568A can also be used in
creating a straight-through cable.

Do you understand class?

Alright, we already identified what color code

will be used for our straight-through cable.
Now, I will demonstrate to you how to make a
straight through cable. But before making the Yes ma’am.
straight-through cable, please be do not forget
our OHS policies.

  Am I clear?
Yes ma’am.
Now, here are the steps in creating a straight
through cable. You should carefully observe as I
demonstrate because after this, you will be
making your own straight-through cable.   Am I
understood?

The teacher will demonstrate to class how to

create a straight-through cable.

Steps in Creating a Straight-through Cable

1. Prepare all materials needed.
2. Remove the outer jacket/insulation of the
cable to about one inch.
3. Untwist the cable pairs, spread the wires, and
arrange them based on T568B color code.
4. Straighten and flatten the wires between your
thumb and forefinger.
5. Trim the untwisted wires to about ½ to ¾ of
an inch.
6. The exposed copper pins on the RJ-45
connector must be facing towards you. Ensure
that the wires are in order from left to right
starting from pin 1.
7. Insert the wire firmly into the RJ-45 connector
until all wires are pushed as far as possible into
the connector.
8. Visually inspect the cable and ensure the right
wire codes match the pin numbers and the eight
wires should be pressed firmly against the end of
the RJ-45 connector.
9. Place the RJ-45 connector and cable into the
crimping tool and crimp the RJ-45 connector
until you hear a click from it.
10. Repeat all the previous steps with the other
end of the cable.
11. Test the cable using the network cable tester.
Yes ma’am.
There you have it. Those are the steps. I have
just created a straight-through cable. None ma’am.

Were you able to follow the procedure class?

Always take into considerations that before

using the cable in connecting actual devices. It is
suggested that you must use a LAN tester first to
check the functionality of the cable.

4. Application
So, it’s now your turn to make your straight-
