Upon arrival in Madrid, Rizal immediately sought the help of Filipino colony Association
Hispano-Filipina and The liberal Spanish newspaper (La Justicia, El Globo, La
Republica, El Resumen)
El Resumen- a Madrid newspaper which sympathized with the Filipino "To cover the
ears, open the purse and fold the arms"- Spanish colonial policy
Rizal received a copy of the ejectment order by the Dominicans against Francisco Rizal
and other Calamba tenants from his brother-in-law Silvestre Ubaldo
From his sister Saturnina, he learned of the deportation of Paciano, Antonio Lopez ,
Silvestre Ubaldo, Teong(Mateo Elejorde) and Dandoy (Dr Rizal's relative) to Mindoro;
these unfortunate deportees were arrested in Calamba and were stripped out of Manila on
September 6, 1890
Jose Ma. Panganiban- Rizal's friend and talented coworker in Propaganda Movement,
died in Barcelona on August 19, 1890, after a lingering illness. He deeply mourned the
passing of this Bicol hero
August 19, 1890- was the day of mourning to numerous Filipinos in Europe. The same
month and day of the year just passed they had to deplore the death of another friend and
countryman FELICIANO GONZALES TIMBANG
Because of Luna's bitterness and also under the influence of alcohol, he would have to
choose the sword, in wich case, Rizal's life would be in jeopardy
He used to attack the Filipinos, including Rizal. He wrote an article in La Epoca, an anti-
Filipino newspaper in Madrid
In the autumn of 1890, he and some friends attended a play Teriso Apolo, and there he
lost his gold watch chain with a locket containing the picture of Leonor Rivera
December 1890- Rizal received a letter from Leonor, announcing her coming marriage to
an Englishman (the choice of her mother)
February 15, 1891- Blumentritt replied to Rizal's letter about his heart break to Leonor
Rivera
1890- Arose an unfortunate rivalry between Rizal and M.H Del Pilar for supremacy
M.H Del Pilar- the fearless lawyer journalist was gaining prestige in madrid for his
vigarious editorials in La Solidaridad
To gain prestige for the propaganda movement and to win respect of Spanish people, they
must possess high standards of morality, dignity, and spirit of sacrifice
Policy of La Solidaridad- enhanced the cleavage between Rizal and Del Pilar
January 1,1891, New Year's Day- the Filipinos in Madrid, numbering about ninety, patch
up their differences and in intensify the campaign for reform
Responsable- a leader chosen to direct affairs of the Filipino community and to determine
the editorial policy of La Solidaridad

After two days of election, Rizal won as the responsable but he did not completed the
required two-thirds vote
Mariano Ponce- completed two-thirds vote and Rizal proclaimed as the Responsable

electing his as Responsable
