Addition/Subtraction
If the number of odd numbers is even the sum will be even and if the number of odd numbers
is odd the sum will be odd
Sum of the 1st 99 odd numbers: 99 is an odd number, so the number of odd numbers is odd. So
the sum will be odd.
Sum of 1st 100 natural numbers: In 100 natural numbers, 50 will be odd and 50 will be even. So
number of odd numbers is 50, which is an even number
Multiplication
If all the odd numbers are odd, the product will be odd. If even one number is even, the
product will be even.
Example 1 Two of a, b, c and d are even and two are odd, not necessarily in order. Which of
the following is definitely even?
(CAT 1997)
(a) a + b + c - 2d
(b) a + 2b - c
(c) a + b-c + d
(d) 2a + b + c – d
Solution Since we do not know which two are even and which two are odd, we will have to do a
bit of hit-and- trial to solve this problem, with the help of options.
In option (a), if a and b are even, and c and d are odd, then this will lead us to odd number.
In option (b), if a and b are even, and c is odd, then this will lead us to odd number.
In option (c), whatever is the value of a, b, c and d, it is always going to be an even number.
In option (d), if a and b are odd, and c and d are even, then this will lead us to odd number.
Explanation Whatever kind of calculation we do with two even and two odd numbers, we will
always get an even result. So, the answer is option (c).
1st term = 5 x 1
Since the number of odd terms is even, therefore the sum is even
Example 3: If N is a natural number then will the following sum be odd or even: N + (N+1) +
(N+2) + (N+3) + (N+4)…..+ (N+101)
This is a series of 102 consecutive natural numbers. OS there are 51 even and 51 odd numbers
Since the number of odd numbers is odd (51), therefore the sum is odd
Example 4: If N is a natural number then will the following sum be odd or even: N + (N+1) +
(N+2) + (N+3) + (N+4)…..+ (N+100)
If N is odd, then there are 51 odd numbers and if N is even then there are 50 odd numbers. So
we cannot say whether the sum will be odd or even
Example 5: Sum of 11 consecutive natural numbers is odd. Is the 6th number odd or even?
Since the sum is even, therefore there are even number of odd numbers
Since they are consecutive numbers, so out of 11, there are 6 even and 5 odd numbers
Example 6: N is a natural number. First 101 multiples of N are added and the sum is odd. Which
of the following is true?
a) 201 N is odd
b) N can be even or odd
c) Sum of the first 20 multiples of N is odd
If N is even, then all the multiples of N will be even and their sum will be even. So N is odd
Sum of first 20 multiples of any natural number will always be even. So (c) is false
