Instructions: Choose one among the following Filipino scientist and inventors:

 Paulo Campos  Ame Garong

 Angel Alcala  Raymundo Punongbayan
 Ricardo Sigua  Gavino Tronio
 Maria Ligaya Braganza  Proceso Alcala
 Baldamero Olivera  Alfredo Galang
 Dioscoro Umali  Benito Lumen
 Diosdado Banatao

Create a flash card (A4 size) showing the profession of the scientist/inventor, his
or her specialization, and his or her most significant contribution. By ready to
present the flash card in class.

 Filipino marine biologist

 National Scientist of the
Philippines in 2014
 Known for his fieldwork to build
sanctuaries
 Promote biodiversity in the
aquatic ecosystems of the
Philippines
 Awards: Guggenheim Fellowship
for Natural Sciences, US & Canada
 Authored over 160 scientific
papers as well as books
ANGEL ALCALA  First Filipino scientist to engage in
comprehensive studies
concerning Philippine reptiles and
amphibians.
Exercise 2.(page 57)
Instructions: Form groups with four members each. Among the scientist and
inventors featured in your flashcards, identify the impact of their inventions and
discoveries, address the questions below using a Power point presentation. Take
down notes of your discussion your group on the space provided.
1. How did these inventions and discoveries supported impact the society?

2. How were these inventions and discoveries supported by the government?

3. Did these inventions and discoveries serve the public good? Explain your
answer.
From the 400 already known species of reptiles and amphibians, 50
more species were identified due to his efforts. Because of his work,
conservation programs in the Philippines are now well established. He
developed the first community-based program that created artificial coral
reefs. This program became the model for similar fisheries development
programs throughout establishing the Apo, Sumilon, Carbin, and Pamilacan
marine reserves in the Philippines.

The inventions and discoveries led by Angel Alcala was supported by

the government in a way that his researches was often funded by the
government. Not only that but also recognizing his efforts by giving him
awards and titles. In 1994, he was given the Field Museum Founders’
Council Award of Merit for contributions to environmental biology. He is a
recipient of the Magsaysay Award for Public Service. In 2014, he was
named a National Scientist of the Philippines. Alcala is currently Trustee of
Silliman University and is also Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences.

These inventions served not only the public but the whole marine life
& his country good. In 1977 Acala set up the first artificial reef in the
Philippines in Dumaguete, when he worked for the Philippine government
as Secretary of Environment and National Resources. This helped the
marine life of our country and helped our waters from further pollution or
even prevent further destruction of our waters.

Exercise 2. Reflection
Instructions: After studying the full text of Martin Heidegger’s the
Question Concerning Technology, available on
www.pysp.org/question_concerning_technology.pdf, answer the
following:
1. What three concepts remain unclear or difficult for you to
understand?

a. ”Technology is not equivalent to the essence of technology.

When we are seeking the essence of “tree,” we have to
become aware that that which pervades every tree, as tree,
is not itself a tree that can be encountered among all the
other trees.”

b. ” But this much remains correct: modern technology too is a

means to an end. That is why the instrumental conception of
technology conditions every attempt to bring man into the
right relation to technology. Everything depends on our
manipulating technology in the proper manner as a means.
We will, as we say, “get” technology “spiritually in hand.”
We will master it. The will to mastery becomes all the more
urgent the more technology threatens to slip from human
control.”

c. ” Only at the point where such an uncovering happens does

the true come to pass. For that reason the merely correct is
not yet the true. Only the true brings us into a free
relationship with that which concerns us from out of its
essence. Accordingly, the correct instrumental definition of
technology still does not show us technology’s essence. In
order that we may arrive at this, or at least come close to it,
we must seek the true by way of the correct. We must ask:
What is the instrumental itself? Within what do such things
as means and end belong?””

2. What three significant insights did you gain in studying this text?

a. Through studying the text of Martin Heidegger’s the

Question Concerning Technology, I’ve now understood that
technology is not only just an “instrument” but it is a way of
understanding the world. Connecting each one of us
digitally, a window to each other’s situations.

b. Through studying the text of Martin Heidegger’s the

Question Concerning Technology, I’ve now understood that
technology is not just a “human activity”, but develops
beyond human control.

c. Through studying the text of Martin Heidegger’s the

Question Concerning Technology, I’ve now understood that
technology is “the highest danger”, risking us to only see the
world through technological thinking.

3. What three questions do you want to ask about the text?

a. What is the true essence of technology?
b. What is the purpose of questioning technology?
c. What does he mean by seeing technology as a human activity?

Exercise 3. Art as Saving Power

Instructions: Heidegger explained that art holds power that could save humans from the danger of being
consumed by technology. In his words, “[art] is pious… yielding to the holding-sway and the safekeeping of truth”
(1977, p.18). In this activity, focus on art as the saving power of technology. Form groups with four members each
and look for an artwork that ‘reveals’ the human person in the midst of technology. In class, brainstorm for 30
minutes. Discuss the artwork in relation to the general concepts discussed in Martin Heidegger’s the Question
Concerning Technology, and present your chosen artwork and the summary of your discussion in front of the class.
The art work that I have chosen shows how humanity evolves through time with the
help of technology. It corresponds with Martin Heidegger’s concepts that technology is a way of
understanding the world. A window to each one’s life or situation. The artwork could also be
interpreted as a futuristic view of humanity in the midst of technology which includes evolution
to a better future. Not only the positive futuristic view, but also a negative futuristic view that
could lead to humanity’s downfall. The use of technology and seeing the world through
technological thinking could destroy each one’s physical interaction towards each other.
According to the website bartleby “Technology is the collection of techniques, skills,
methods and processes used in the production of goods or services or in the accomplishment of
objectives, such as scientific investigation. Technology can be the knowledge of techniques,
processes, and the like, or it can be embedded in machines, computers, devices, and factories,
which can be operated by individuals without detailed knowledge of the workings of such
things.” However, it can be addicting and it can hurt our communication skills. Extended screen
time can result in health ramifications like insomnia, eyestrain, and increased anxiety and
depression.
This artwork can serve as our eye opener that our future on technology is in our hands. It all
depends on how and where we will use it. The use of technology could make our future better
but could also bring our world great danger.
