Contemporary World
World is usually referring to Earth, an earthly state of human existence and
a group of things such as countries, animals and an area of human activity and understanding. So why do we need to study the world? How does contemporary world contribute the development of different nation? In today’s constantly changing world, societies are becoming increasingly interdependent and have more social, economic, political and cultural relationships. Similarly, the problems and issues that characterize the contemporary world are interconnected and multidimensional. Contemporary world is a part of social sciences that deals with problems and issues related to the environment, population, wealth, power, tensions and conflicts. Contemporary world itself is the circumstances that are existing and challenging us at these modern times, and present time like this. It was also a "sign of the times". We live in an age where many of us are facing different problems, circumstances, and issues that all other societies can face. These can be political, economic, social, and even historical and geographical factors that later on can affect all humanity. Over time, the world has become a smaller place. Globalization is the process by which the world, previously isolated through physical and technological distance, becomes increasingly interconnected. Globalization happens through the increase in interaction between peoples around the world that involves the sharing of ideas, cultures, goods, services and investment. As globalization increases over time, individuals, firms, institutions, and politicians work within and across countries to define exactly how “open” they want to be. It is natural for people to want to protect their own products through tariffs or trade restrictions, while having open access to foreign markets. Nevertheless, if one country protects its products, its trading partners are likely to do the same. One thing is for sure, protection and openness to international trade both have income distribution effects. Ever since World War II, people become more aware of the growing importance of international trade. In order to keep global economy striving, organizations such as the World Bank and world trade organization have encourage free trade among nations. Globalization allows businesses all over the world to develop and operate, so when it comes to international sales of goods, probably this will get high sales. However, goods will taking into account if it is brought into the international scale because there are goods that are not allowed in the other country. Over the past decades, trade has accelerated changes in world change because of the rapid acceptance of the internet as the business tool. Today, buyers and suppliers can be connected and communicate around the world via video call or simply picking up a phone instead of having business trip and send and signed documents digitally. Internet has made the world smaller and more connected like never been before. Today it is become a norm for company base in one country to produce and become source of the product from one another and sell them worldwide. Countries engaged in international trade to benefit from interacting with other countries. While countries in isolation area have to be contented with being self-sufficient and having lesser variety of goods. But with international exchanges of goods and services that we call globalization, each countries get to enjoy a wider variety of goods that may offer better quality. By globalization, countries can afford to specialize and produce only some items that are relatively better to produce. In short, each country does not need to produce everything but to focus on what is more efficient. This means that the world becomes a global production can produce half with each country, specializing and producing what is best at their country. The scares resources are being use, allowing more to be produce and consume globally. Therefore, globalization really is a big step forward for the world and does increasing its efficiency. That is why different countries are signing trade deal to further more cross boarder transaction that will tap each other’s resources from each country. Not only countries can gain benefit by globalization but also its citizens. The Philippines has taken a participative role in different events and organizations across the globe. With the increasing interdependence among countries, we have become a nation that is open for everyone whether for trade, tourism, or partnerships. However, some issues within and outside the country that are still beyond the scope of advantages of globalization and regionalism. This is where we must accentuate our roles as citizens of the nation. Globalization is all about the efficiencies and opportunities open markets create. Business can communicate efficiently and effectively with their partners, suppliers, and customers and manage better their supplies, inventories, and distribution network. Local producers can sell their products in distant markets with the same ease and speed as in their country. When it comes to the quality of the product it has been enhanced so the customers will retain. But for any production to take place we need land, labor, capital, and entrepreneurship. Every country does not have an equal amount of these factors, some has more labor and some has more capital. And in order for the production to take place each country must know the demand for the product. Decisions that are being made can give benefit to people all over the world including knowledge and culture that each country has. By studying Contemporary world, we as a citizen learn to understand the nature of the relationships that form between societies and the way in which these relationships shape the organization of the world today. It help us to take part in democratic life, develop an attitude of openness to the world, and respect for diversity. As a student, it is a big help and opportunity to study contemporary world, where it can help the learners to become interested on different contemporary world issues. It can also help us to develop capabilities, to construct knowledge about the issues, to become aware of the role that we must play in society, and to know our responsibilities as citizens. In addition, as an adult and responsible citizen we must think in our own way on how to participate and contribute for the sake of our society and understands it’s concept. What’s important is to realize that globalization itself is neither good nor bad, it just depend on how people deal with new possibilities in the future.
