Lesson 1 Understanding Globalization

My Perspective on Globalization

Three things come to mind when I think of Globalization, Growing

Interdependence, Strong relationships or connections, and Global advancement. These
three made me realized how broad and strong the globalization are. But as I go further,
discovering and reading some of the definitions and meanings of Globalization I
realized, that this topic had a lot of meanings, definitions and purpose. The diverse,
often disparate, and mostly contested definition of globalization are focuses in different
aspect such as, the economic, financial or industrial, political, informational, and
cultural.

I learned that Globalization is a process by which businesses or other

organizations develop international influence or constant international scale. Inasmuch
as, Globalization is not just about the process it’s about the growing scale of trades we
had, services and flow of international capital and the wide or rapid spread of
technologies that we can use to stay connected and globally advanced. I believed that
in our lesson we are more focused to the economic side of Globalization. So, as I
expect on my learning journey prior to this lesson or topic, it would be more challenging
and extra fun for me, since when we say economic it’s all about the trade, capital, the
money, information and people. Economic Globalization also is a complex global
process of expanding the market economic system all throughout the world. The market
economy, the economic system that gives freedom to the entrepreneurs to control
productive process to pursue profit, is just one kind of economic system designed by
human societies. It is a corporate-driven process of enhanced transnational exchange
of products, services, technologies, and capital, creating an increased interdependence
of world economy.

Furthermore, when I think the major contributions of Globalization there are lots
of words come to my mind. I believe in all aspect, such as in the economic, social,
cultural, political, financial and informational, the Globalization plays a big role and
made a huge impact upon the development of our nation. The contribution of
globalization to the economic development, in general is that the Globalization helps to
boost our economy and increased the numbers of people getting hired specifically in the
fields of business outsourcings processes like the companies of TeleTech, BPO,
Accenture, Concentrix, and Insurances such as PRU Life UK, SunLife, Manulife and
many more. In addition, it also improves our trading system, such as the process of
importation and exportation of our own products from local to international market, I
must say, that these major impacts of Globalization help our economy in a positive way,
but we need to know that in every situation there is a pros and cons.
Moreover, people must be extra careful and at the same time set some
limitations to limit those negative impacts. The next one is the social development, when
we way social development it refers to the development of interaction with the human
world around us, including relationships with others also the social skills we need to fit
into our culture or society. Furthermore, the great impact of globalization prior to the
social and economic development, I think is by being socially and globally connected to
each other. As our world became more and more advance because of the development
of modern technology. It is now easy for us to stay connected, share and find new ideas
and information that will help us to communicate, share and improve our international
trade, capital and information. And one of the great examples to describe the great
contributions of globalization to the social development are the recent indicators of
Global Connectedness Index (GCI), a measurement of flows and interconnections of a
country to other global players through exchanges in trade, capital, people, and
information. Based on the Global Connectedness Index in 2018 report, the World’s level
of connectedness in terms of international trade, capital, information, and people is at its
peak at 2017. Moreover, the report indicates that the Netherlands is the world’s most
globally connected country, while the Europe is the most highly globally connected
continent. Amazing right? In addition, also the economies in Southeast Asia like
Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam have exceeded expectations for global
connectivity, particularly in trade flow. However, based on this report, only 20 percent of
the global economic output of the countries is exported from the home countries and
only 3 percent of people are living outside these countries they were born in. This
shows that the material and social flows are more within and between countries rather
than on a global level.

For me, Globalization had lots to offer but we must understand that Globalization
has its positive and negative effects or impact since the day it was developed. And one
of the positive impacts of Globalization is that, It Increases economic growth. By
increasing the international exchange of goods, technological advances, and
information, globalization increases economic development for any country participating
in the global economy. An increase in economic growth means better living standards,
higher incomes, more wealth in a country, and, often, less poverty, in short, the overall
well-being of a country. Next is, it Makes production more affordable. A global market
allows businesses wider access to production opportunities and consumers, meaning
that there are more goods available at a wider range of price points. Also, it promotes
working together. When different countries come together to engage in trade and
investments in a global financial market, they become interdependent and often come
to rely on one another for certain goods and services. Lastly, it brings opportunities to
poorer countries. Globalization allows companies to move their production from high-
cost locations to lower-cost locations abroad, this means bringing jobs, information
technology, and other economic opportunities to countries with fewer resources.
Hence, while it can benefit nations, there are also several negative effects of
globalization that is need urgent limitations, this one is about Unequal economic growth.
While globalization tends to increase economic growth for many countries, the growth
isn’t equal, richer countries often benefit more than developing countries. Next is the,
Lack of local businesses. The policies permitting globalization tend to advantage
companies that have the resources and infrastructure to operate their supply chains or
distribution in many different countries, which can hedge out small local businesses, for
instance, a local New York hamburger joint may struggle to compete with the prices of a
multinational burger-making corporation. Inasmuch as, It also Increases potential global
recessions. When many nations’ economic systems become interdependent, the
likelihood of a global recession increases dramatically, because if one country’s
economy starts to struggle, this can set off a chain reaction that can affect many other
countries simultaneously, causing a worldwide financial crisis. Second to the last was it
Exploits cheaper labor markets. Globalization allows businesses to increase jobs and
economic opportunities in developing countries, where the cost of labor is often
cheaper. However, overall economic growth in these countries may be slow or stagnant.
Lastly, Globalization causes job displacement. Globalization doesn’t result in an
increased number of jobs; rather, it redistributes jobs by moving production from high-
cost countries to lower-cost ones. This means that high-cost countries often lose jobs
due to globalization, as production goes overseas.

To formally close this chapter, I must say those things that come to my mind after
thinking about globalization is truth and really happened. Throughout my journey upon
knowing this topic, I’ve learned so much I enjoyed and gain lots of knowledge about
Globalization. I get to familiarized and know it’s meaning especially into the economic
side of it. Also, I realized and valued, its major contributions to our society, economy
and a nation as a whole. Inasmuch as, this lesson gives us a wider knowledge about
the real situation of how our world is changing now, from an ordinary world to a more
and advanced and globally connected now. So, as a student it opens my eyes and heart
how important it is especially it has a positive and negative effects so, as a citizen of this
nation we need to become more creative and at the same time disciplined since we
want a world that is balanced especially now, we are more globally connected so we
need to maintain this and set some limitations to avoid any circumstances. Moreover,
before I end this chapter, I just want to put this meaningful quote by Kofi Annan. If
globalization is to succeed, it must succeed for poor and rich alike. It must deliver rights
no less than riches. It must provide social justice and equity no less than economic
prosperity and enhanced communication.

Lesson 2 Interrogating Globalization

Activity 1
Research on Philippines Business Process Outsourcings (BPOs)

In this activity we are assigned to make a research about the Philippines

Business Process Outsourcings or the BPOs. So, in making a research I gathered all
the important information and ideas that will help me to learn and discover more about
the BPOs.

Based on my research, Business process outsourcing is the contracting of a

third-party agency or professional to perform specific tasks and operations that are
traditionally done within the organization. It can be local, national or offshore. Prior to
that, Companies outsource non-core activities like bac office tasks, as well as highly
specialized and technical services from data analytics is to consulting. In addition,
according to DTI or The Philippines Department of Trade and Industry, BPO is the
delegation of service-type business processed to a third-party service provider. The
industry is generally divided into the following sectors: Contact centers, back-office
services, data transcription, animation, software development, engineering development
and game development. Globalization and technical innovation continue to inform how
business is done around the world. The same is true for the BPO industry, service
providers and BPO workers. BPO is constantly evolving. From being mainly a cost
reduction tool, BPO has become a critical strategy for most businesses.

Prior to that, outsourcing in the Philippines presents a lot of opportunities. Even

as artificial intelligence threatens to replace lower-skilled jobs in the BPO sector, more
medium to high-skilled jobs are expected to be created, as long as the workforce adapts
and upgrades its skills. That’s why BPO in the Philippines is becoming a key developing
industry, primarily due to the relatively low cost of living, and a workforce which
composed mainly of young and educated Filipinos with good spoken English language
skills. No wonder why the Datamark named the Philippines as the top offshore BPO
destination in 2016, due to its fast and steady growth. The BPO sector in the Philippines
is the largest private employer in the country, generating about 1.3 million direct jobs in
2017. This is expected to exceed 1.7 million in the next few years. Despite the BPO
slowdown, the Philippines’ steady growth trajectory continues to attract many investors
from abroad to establish or expand their operations here.

Even though we’re experiencing global health crisis and all of the sectors are
having a hard time, In BPO’s the Good things will happen amidst challenges, according
to Benedict Hernandez, chairman of the Contact Center Association of the Philippines
(CCAP), said that the BPO roadmap to 2022 is looking bright.
Local information technology-business process management (IT-BPM) is
projected to have almost $40 billion in revenue after six years, at the end of 2022. With
that, BPO employees need not worry because the Philippines will not fall behind the list
of countries that rule the BPO world. More and more companies will invest and that
means there will be more jobs available.

Origin of Starbucks

Starbucks is the largest coffeehouse chain in the world. It was founded by Jerry
Baldwin, Gordon Bowker, and Zev Siegl, its first store was opened on March 30, 1971
near the historic Pike Place Market in Seattle. The three Starbucks founders had two
things in common: they were all coming from academia, and they all
loved coffee and tea. They invested and borrowed some money to open the first store in
Seattle. Starbucks name was inspired by the classic tale, “Moby-Dick,” evoking the
seafaring tradition of the early coffee traders.

As the world's largest coffeehouse chain, Starbucks is seen to be the major

representation of the United States' second wave of coffee culture. As of September
2020, the company had 32,660 stores in 83 countries, including 16,637 company
operated stores and 16,023 licensed stores. Of these 32,660 stores, 18,354 were in
the United States, Canada, and Latin America. Starbucks locations serve hot and cold
drinks, whole-bean coffee, micro-ground instant coffee, espresso, caffe latte, full and
loose-leaf teas, juices, Frappuccino beverages, pastries, and snacks. Some offerings
are seasonal or specific to the locality of the store.
Story of a Starbucks as a Transnational Corporation

A transnational corporation operates substantial facilities, does business in more

than one country, and does not consider any particular country its corporate home. One
of the significant advantages of a transnational company is that they are able to
maintain a greater degree of responsiveness to the local markets where they maintain
facilities. I believe that Starbucks appears to be a “good” company as a whole because
it has flourished & worked hard to make the name well known around the world,
continued to generate billions of dollars in different categories from revenues to
operating income whilst still helping out various communities in the local and global
public.

I believed that Starbucks is considered as a transnational corporation because

Starbucks has trans nationalized is driven by its goals to override competitors in the
coffee market as well as accessing larger opportunities in the international markets. The
company successfully expands worldwide through local partnerships and willingness to
adapt with the local cultures and values. I believe that Starbucks appears to be a good
company as a whole because it has flourished & worked hard to make the name well
known around the world, continued to generate billions of dollars in different categories
from revenues to operating income whilst still helping out various communities in the
local and global public.

BSBA HR-1 Lesson 2 Interrogating Globalization
Assignment

I truly agreed, Globalization is characterized by a rapid exchange of goods,

people, and capital across different countries because from the definition it itself, it is a
process of growing economic interdependence of countries in the international
economy, So Globalization plays a big role upon the exchange of our products, like
having the importation and exportation, creating different opportunities from our people
and for boosting our economy or economic status.

I believe Globalization is a deliberate phenomenon. Since Globalization is an

intermittent process. Its impact may differ from time to time, but it always brings the
economic, political, social and cultural aspects of society to the global level.
Simultaneously, it continues to demonstrate new traits on an almost-daily basis and is
constantly exposed to new events. Moreover, the implications of globalization are
perceivable to all. The global opening of markets promotes a free circulation of goods
and money, as well as other world-wide services. Many individuals, enterprises and
states stand to gain from this process. They will enjoy global offers of goods, services,
capital and manpower, and ultimately, a higher standard of living. Yet, globalization is
not always considered a blessing. The World Trade Organization rounds of recent years
reflect the growing concern and discontent, surrounding the issue of globalization.
People feel exposed to and threatened by a process they have no influence over, and
fear being sacrificed in a global competition that is beyond their comprehension. In
particular, a number of developing nations dread lagging even further behind the
developed countries, as a result of having to combat international duties and other trade
barriers, and consequently being excluded from the global growth.

Moreover, there are different actors and institutions that drive economic
globalization, most of which are non-state actors. First one is the World Bank, it
facilitates investments of capital for member countries and fund large-scale projects by
providing loans for member countries. Second was the International Monetary Fund or
IMF this organization helps in bringing enormous flow of foreign money through loans
and speculative investments. Third was, the World Trade Organization, this organization
creates rules for global trade and investment, aim to reduce tariffs and encourage
countries to deregulate economies. I think these organization affect the trade and
economic policies and serve as a source of funds, services, technical for economic
globalization.

To conclude this chapter, I must say that globalization is literally broad and
powerful, it shows here that globalization is a deliberate phenomenon and has an actor
that plays a big role in shaping the whole globalization.

Lesson 3: The Global Economy

Contemplate

Economic globalization is defined as the expansion of natural economies, the

global market driven by modern technologies and institutional set ups that promote
faster and easier flow of goods and capital.

I do believe that economic globalization plays a major role on making our

economy increased, in having a strong connection and relationship with other countries
and by creating different opportunities in our peoples. Moreover, it shows here that
there are different actors and institutions that drive economic globalization, most of
which are non-state actors. These include International Economic Organization like
International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and central banks; private sectors led by
MNC’s or Multinational Companies and Civil society. These organization affect the trade
and economic policies and serve as source of support funds, services, technical for
economic globalization. After reading and knowing the topics and the questioned
assigned to us I chose to discuss and learn more about the International Financial
Institutions and in International Monetary Fund. This institution operates in an
international level, ranging from development banks, such as world bank and the
European bank for reconstruction and development, monetary authorities, such as the
International Monetary Fund. These organizations give loans to governments for large-
scale projects, restructuring and balance of payments on condition that they make
specific changes that IFI’s believe will boost economic growth. Just like here in our
country, we have several loans and debts from those institutions but as we can see
there are lots of infrastructures and projects created with the use of those funds. So, I
think our government must use these funds properly and for the betterment of our
economy and nation as well.

Furthermore, I also include the International Monetary Fund or IMF because I

believe this international institution is connected to IFI’s, from the meaning it self this
institution is responsible on promoting international monetary corporation and exchange
stability among different countries, to foster economic growth and high employment; and
to provide short-term financial assistance to countries to help ease balance of payments
adjustments. Like for example our country is a member of the ASEAN or the
Association of Southeast Asian Nation, it shows that our country is doing its best to
improve our economy by communicating with other countries by the means of these
institutions.

All in all, it shows that economic globalization is broad and powerful, it has the
ability to expand national economies by means of having those important actors in
shaping the Globalization.

Lesson 3: The Global Economy

Assignment

“Global Free Trade has done more harm than Good”

Global free trade is a largely theoretical policy under which governments impose
absolutely no tariffs, taxes, or duties on imports, or quotas on exports. But why is a
Global Free Trade has done more harm than good?

I do believe that in every aspect of our lives there is pros and cons, and in order
for us to achieve its advantages we must use it in a positive way, same with the cons
we must minimize it and improve to avoid any hesitations. I dare say that Global Free
Trade Agreement has its own pros and cons. As the Global free trade is happening
between different nations or countries were importing and exporting of goods,
resources, information, services and technology, there has no limit and no restrictions
that incudes taxes, bans, and quotas. Free trade may have good impact to our economy
and other aspect, but we must be aware that in this situation we can experience
disadvantages and with that, it may cause harm and damage to our economic stability
especially to the workers. Like for example this GMA news on last September 24, 2021
it is stated here that “Benguet farmers alarmed over ‘smuggled’ carrots from China” in
this case it shows how global free trade can affect our local farmers and workers if there
is this kind of scenario that is really happening in our country. Instead of nurturing our
products we tend to chose to buy smuggled products from different countries and I think
that is illegal. Prior to that, it made me decide that yes, the Free trade may cause
different harms because this may decrease competitiveness in the markets and may
cost low demands for the commodities and services locally. Free trade may generate
more currency and may open up more markets. All of these commodities and services
being trade can be avail at cheaper rate or price. We purchase goods or services that
have low cost that makes disadvantage for the local markets and workers. These may
result to stagnation of wages, decrease demands, increased unemployment, and under
paid workers that outweigh the benefits of this global free trade. From this perspective,
global free trade provides more benefits for more corporation, but for the poor this is a
problem for their livelihood and can have serious negative impacts to other local
workers and markets.

All in all, I learned that in this economic globalization its not all about the
advancements and advantages, we must also learn its other side and that is its negative
effects. It shows that we need to be aware and informed because in this environment
the pros and cons are everywhere.
