1. i) Sketch the following directions and planes:

ii) Describe with the aid of sketches four (4) types of point defects which may occur
in metal crysta ls and indicate the way in which they affect the lattice.
(5 marks)

iii) The density of a sample of pure iron was determined experimentally and found to
be 7875 kgm-3 . The radius of the iron atom is 1.24 x 10-10m and the crystal
structure is body-centered cubic . Calculate the density and comment on your
result.

2. With the aid of the Iron-Iron Carbide Diagram (Data Sheet I)

i) Determine the phases present

ii) The composition of each phase present

iv) Draw the micro-structure and label it.

3. i) Show how the following heat treatment would be carried out, quoting
approximately temperatures and cooling rates.

a) Normalising a 1040 steel.

b) Hardening a 1080 steel.

c) Process annealing of cold rolled mild steel.

5_ i) State whether the corrosion rate of a piece of the iron placed in tap water is
increased or decreased by the following :
