INTRODUCTION
Websites are the most important component of the internet. A website “is a central location of
various web pages that are all related and can be accessed by visiting the home page using
a browser”.[ CITATION Com18 \l 1033 ].A website is designed or developed by web designer who
are responsible for developing and designing websites, web pages and interfaces for an Fiji
Dairy Limited as it “encompasses a number of different disciplines, from user experience
design, to document markup, to serious programming”[ CITATION Min15 \l 1033 ]. The purpose of
this project is to develop a website for the Fiji Dairy Limited. This is to generate more
customers for the business which will lead to more potential sales. This is due to more
customers and potential customers visiting the site for support or information about new and
upcoming products and services whenever it is convenient for them.
Fiji Dairy Limited is 100% Fijian owned and Fiji’s only dairy processing company. The
company is a joint venture between Southern Cross Foods Limited and the Dairy Farmers of
Fiji. The principal activities of the company are processing and sale of liquid milk, flavored
milk, cheese, cultured food, butter and re-packaging of milk Powder. The company prides in
producing affordable dairy products that supports every Fijians balance diet through the
much needed nutrients that are available in the company’s products.[ CITATION Fij18 \l 1033 ]
I as the web designer, hired by the Fiji Dairy Limited management team to create, design
and develop its website so that customers and potential buyers can quickly and easily find
out more about the business and the products or services they have to offer. Web
development is a “process for creating a new web site or implementing changes to one
already in use, e.g. adding a significant new section to a live site”.[CITATION Placeholder1 \l 1033 ].
There are eight phases involved in the development process and I will be undergoing through
the first four of the eight process to design the schools’ website and these are; Firstly,
Website planning is where the web designer sets its goals and purpose of designing the
website, “It’s important to identify your website’s purpose, as well as your target audience.
You should also define your goals”[CITATION Hos17 \l 1033 ]. Secondly, Website content is “web
designer speaks for the text, images, sound, video, etc., that a website contains, and that can
be viewed using a web browser besides content’ may be perceived to also include non-web
media formats such as Word documents and PDFs, plug-ins and other contents such as
widgets and mash-ups”[CITATION Mot \l 1033 ]. Thirdly, Website design is where your
“everything about your website - including the content, the way it looks, and the way it works
is determined by the website design. It is a process of conceptualizing, planning, and building
a collection of electronic files that determine the layout, colors, text styles, structure,
graphics, images, and use of interactive features that deliver pages to your site visit” [CITATION
Net14 \l 1033 ]. Lastly, Website Construction is “during which the bulk of your work is done
assuming your website is fairly large. To start this website construction phase you will want
to build a minimum working prototype. Any unique features should be added at this time.
For example, if your website posts tutorials, add one or two tutorials so viewers will get the
idea how the website will work, but do not create all pages unless it is necessary”[ CITATION
Web \l 1033 ].

The above mentioned steps of the website development will be carried out in this project
while designing Fiji Dairy Limited’s website and it is my responsibility as the web designer
to make it effective, efficient and convenient for the Fiji Dairy Limited and the interested
viewers and should reach out to as many viewers as possible.

PHASE 1: WEBSITE PLANNING
This initial stage is the process of defining goals and objectives for the Web site and to collect
and analyze the information needed to justify the budget and resources required.[ CITATION
Web18 \l 1033 ]
Page | 3
Ameesha Nand
966814
These factors include:
I. What web designer’s peers are doing?
The peers will be using the latest version of HTML 5.0 (Hyper Text Markup Language) and
XHTML as it is more compatible with the browser support and much stricter syntax rules
that will be used to create Fiji Dairy Limited’s website. Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) will
decide how the website content will look by its formatting and editing contents in addition to
the website.
I. What new content & design options are available?
The content and designs that are decided to be available on the Fiji Dairy Limited’s website
are animations such as scrolling pictures of the dairy products. Widgets and mash ups that
will be used to inform the viewer such as clock analog, weather and Google map.
III. How audiences are behaving online?
This website would allow viewers by reading the information together with pictures for better
understandability especially for those who are not eligible to read and pictures will also be
available of the dairy products so that users can locate, navigate, read and understand the
websites content easily.
The Cost of Development
The cost of developing the website varies depending on how much work is to be done, such
as adding a banner, moving the logo location, creating a fixed navigation bar. This also
includes the current website features and design costs, the estimated cost is around $10,000
- $15,000 for the design and development.
Setting Smart Goals
A web designer does not randomly set its goals for website thus it needs to be reasonable and
actionable which is to be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely. As a web
designer, my goal is to develop a website for Fiji Dairy Limited which will consist of 2 pages
and would be completed within 2 weeks’ time.
User Needs
When creating a website, the web designer must keep in mind about what the users want
and who are the audience. For this website, the audiences are mainly customers who are
interested in the dairy products that the company wishes to offer and the site is to produce
information which is related to Dairy products.
Researching User Needs
The best way to establish what the audiences need in the website is to give out
questionnaires and talking to them about what they want to see in the site and not what the
web designer thinks it should be.

PHASE 2: WEBSITE CONTENT
Content journey
Effective marketing is based on the ability to deliver the right content to the right people at
the right time. The needs and expectations of your customers change as they progress
through the buyer’s journey. These changes must be addressed with specific content at each
stage to ensure your business can close more sales.[ CITATION Aut18 \l 1033 ]. The customers or
the users would rely on the Fiji Dairy Limited’s site for information about the dairy
products they are offering. Their journey will end once they get what they are searching for.
The formats that will be used in this site are:
Plain text: Plaintext which is the straightest forward of all content to be published on web
this is because it can be authored in any word processor and viewed in any web browser.
(Ministry Of Education, Computer Studies Year 13, 2015). It would be also easy for the users
of the site to read and understand the content and get the information they need.
Pictures would also be the part of the content as it would play a major role in attracting
customers and thus will lead to more potential sales. Use of pictures offers low-cost options
for producing high-quality content. Pictures surpass language and words and allow for a
greater understanding of whatever is being said. Pictures would be used to display the
products that Fiji Dairy Limited is offering.
Other content that would appear are Widgets that is an add on embedded feature from
another site such as weather and Mash Ups to link the Fiji Dairy Limited’s site with the
social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter and search engines such as Google and
Yahoo. This will be projected in the future update of the site.

PHASE 3: WEBSITE DESIGN
Everything about your website - including the content, the way it looks, and the way it works
- is determined by the website design. Web design is a process of conceptualizing, planning,
and building a collection of electronic files that determine the layout, colors, text styles,
structure, graphics, images, and use of interactive features that deliver pages to your site
visitors[ CITATION Net18 \l 1033 ].A good website design plays a major role in delivering useful
content to its user and makes it easier for them to navigate, locate, read and understand the
web content.
The following are the website design format that could be used in the construction of the Fiji
Dairy’s Website;
I. Information Architecture

I. Interaction Design
Deals with behavior of the users, how they interact with the website. In Fiji Dairy
Limited’s website, users will mostly interact by just clicking and scrolling to view
information as it will not require a user to generate any other actions.
Page | 9
Ameesha Nand

II. Visual design
Is what the people think when they consider web design. It concerns on how well
it matches the goals of the Fiji Dairy’s Limited site, the expectation of users and
the values of Fiji Dairy’s Limited.
Usability Explained
This is about how usable the site is. It encompasses quality attributes that
determines how easy a design is to use and also methods used to achieve usability
during the process of designing. The usability for Fiji Dairy’s limited site is achieved
through the use of navigation design such as top-level navigation in order to make it
easier for the users to navigate.
Page | 10
Ameesha Nand
966814
PHASE 4: WEBSITE CONSTRUCTION
This is basically where the development of the website takes place as the developers may not
design the look or structure of the site but they must communicate well with designer and
suggest solutions to meet the intended site goals. The activities carried out in the
development of the Fiji Dairy’s Limited website are:
Authoring/markup
Is where the Fiji Dairy’s Limited website’s HTML contents and function were created using
notepad. HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) is the language used to create web page
documents.
Styling
The Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) was used to describe how that content should look in the
Fiji Dairy’s Limited website. This includes fonts, colors, background images, line spacing,
and page layout and so on.
Scripting and Programming
JavaScript is the language that makes elements on web pages does things. It adds behaviors
and functionality to elements in the page and even to the browser window itself.[ CITATION
Placeholder1 \l 1033 ] This will be added in the Fiji Dairy’s website in future update.
Browser Compatibility
Browser compatibility of the Fiji Dairy’s Limited has been tested in the Mozilla Firefox and
Google Chrome and it is presented correctly on the range of computers.

Screen Resolution
Web sites cannot be created for the largest possible size since not all computer
monitor has resolution to display larger size outputs so 1024-pixels wide by 768-
pixels high is used for doing it so. For the purpose, Fiji Dairy’s website is also of the
standard screen resolution size.
Page | 16

966814
PHASE 5: WEBSITE TESTING
Website Testing is a process for evaluating the conformance of a site to an agreed
set of guidelines. The purpose of testing is to ensure website is capable of operating
to a minimum acceptable standard, in order to meet the Goals that have been set for
it.[ CITATION Placeholder1 \l 1033 ]
Website Testing encompasses many areas —ranging from simple spell checking to a
full security review. For convenience, these can be grouped into a catalogue that lists
all appropriate methodologies. A summary of this is shown below. [ CITATION
Placeholder1 \l 1033 ]

PHASE 6: WEBSITE HOSTING
Website Hosting refers to the service that allows a site to be stored on and accessed
from the internet.
For most organizations there are only two options in this regard:
1. Invest in a self-made infrastructure
2. Find an external host.
While a small web site with expert staff could probably undertake its own hosting,
most customized infrastructures are created for busy Dynamic or Transactional sites.
This is because these sites are driven by a desire to retain total control of everything
they do.
As such, the only realistic option for the vast majority of firms is to seek the support
of an independent Website Hosting company.
Website Hosting companies number in the thousands. Yet, even a cursory review will
show that they are not all the same. Some offer excellent value in terms of disk
space, but have very poor service.
Others have highly knowledgeable staff, but are undermined by bad technology.
How can a web designer identify the company that is right for the site?
The following process can be used to identify suitable candidates:
1. Step 1. Collect References - Ask web designer peers how they handle their own
sites.
2. Step 2. Initial Screening - Contact selected Hosts by email, outlining web sites
requirements. Any company that fails to respond within a timely period can be
eliminated.
3. Step 3. Detailed Screening – Ask about:
• Site hosting & connectivity
• Security arrangements
• Customer service
• Cost
4. Step 4: Evaluation and Decision – Can this company meet our Fiji Dairy Limited’s
needs, now and in the future.
Page | 18
Ameesha Nand
966814
Service Level Agreement (SLA)
An SLA is a contract that stipulates commitments about the quality of service a Host
will provide.
Some of the most important aspects to include are:
1. Availability – At least 99.9% should be demanded as a minimum, though up to
100% is offered by many hosts.
2. Reliability – At a maximum, no more than 1 or 2 unplanned outages should occur
per year, i.e. the site should not be falling over every day.
3. Responsiveness - There should be no decline in the speed of the website below a
certain agreed number of concurrent visitors, e.g. 1000.
Website Addresses /Domain Names
Every device on the internet has a unique number called an IP address attached to it,
e.g. 123.456.789.012. However, strings of numbers are difficult to remember, so a
parallel system is also available.
This allows addresses called ‘Domain Names’ to be created from alphabetical
characters. A Domain Name is simply a textual label that corresponds to a numerical
IP address.
Many variations on the format of a web address are possible. This type of
configuration is possible because a web address is composed of several different
parts. These are:
• Subdomain: By convention this is www
• Second-level domain name: This is usually the name of web Fiji Dairy Limited.
• Top-level domain name: This can include .com, .org, .i.e., etc.
With regard to top-level domains, there is a huge variety to choose from. Some of
these are open to anyone; others have highly restricted usage.
Page | 19
Ameesha Nand
966814
PHASE 7: WEBSITE PUBLICITY
The website is now live and is hopefully on its way to fulfilling its goals. However, the
website is just one of several million vying for the attention of a selective and
impatient audience. Standing out from the crowd needs more than just beautiful
design, it requires the support of some serious publicity.
Below are listed a number of promotional techniques—both on line and offline—that
can be used to promote web site. Many of these are free of charge, though they can
demand a significant investment of time. Others require a monetary investment.
Online Publicity – encompasses promotional activity that occurs over the internet.
The production of clear and concise content helps Search Engines to identify the
subject matter of a website. This makes them much more likely to direct traffic to it.
Offline Publicity – encompasses promotional activity that does not occur primarily
over the internet.
These may include:
1. Web site web address on all company stationery.
2. Invite the printed media to review a website.
3. Engage a public relations company for standard advertising, e.g. in a printed
journal.
Page | 20
Ameesha Nand
966814
PHASE 8: WEBSITE REVIEW
The purpose of a review is to establish if Website Goals are being achieved and, if not,
what corrective action is needed.
In the first phase of the Development Cycle (Website Planning) we learned about
SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely.
For example, web designer might have set goals to:
• Attract15% more donations by 2017.
• Improve brand recognition among 18-30 year olds by 30% by 2017.
Web designer must now assess if these goals have been achieved and –most
importantly- how the website contributed to them, e.g. how many funders used the
web site as an element in their decision process. To do so, web designer will need to
examine several data sources to reach a firm conclusion. These could include
financial numbers, a survey of website traffic.
By triangulating all these sources, web designer can establish how the site has
performed.

RESULT
The benefits of Fiji Dairy Limited having its own website are:
1. Increased Sales for the Fiji Dairy as more visitors’ leads to more potential sales.
That’s how Fiji Dairy’s website will help increase its profit and sales. The Fiji
Dairy’s website can drive more people to their site by consistently updating and
promoting the contents of its site such as new dairy products available and
prices of those products. The more informative the Fiji Dairy’s site is, the
greater the possibility of increasing its sales.
2. By having a website for Fiji Dairy Limited, it can market its service and reach
thousands of people. Publishing news, content and information on new
products and services of Fiji Dairy will help them to attract a number of
audiences. Online advertising is a great way to help build up awareness, and
the traffic to Fiji Dairy’s website.
3. By having a website for Fiji Dairy Limited, it will help them to improve their
customer service. Even outside of business hours, Fiji Dairy’s website
continues to find and secure new customers. It offers the customer satisfaction
and user convenience as they can access the information they need in the
comfort of their own home, with no added pressure to buy.

CONCLUSION
To conclude, with the development and growth in technology and internet, companies
such as Fiji Dairy Limited are establishing their website in order to have a successful
online presence and have increased potential sales and growth. The four phases of
the web designing process were carried out while constructing the website for Fiji
Dairy Limited. The HTML and notepad was used for coding and creating the content
while Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) was used to give the look to the content. Browser
compatibility was tested on two browsers (Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox) with
its standard screen resolution. The Fiji Dairy’s Limited site will be accessible to all the
viewers and potential visitors of the site and will also be compatible with the
browsers so that the visitors or the viewers don’t face any difficulty while accessing
the site.
