Cox’s Bazar has several striking features. The long sandy beach that stretches from the mouth of the
Bakkhali River, going all the way to Teknaf, welcomes tourists for bathing, sun-bathing and swimming.
The breathtaking beauty of the setting-sun behind the waves of the sea is probably the main attraction of
Cox’s Bazar. Handmade cigars along with other handmade products of the Rakhayne tribal families are
good buys. Despite every above fact being true, the reality is that the limitations here are limitless too.
The whole area is being developed in an unplanned way. The beach area has encroached and hundreds of
buildings have sprung up there, causing a negative effect on the environment and giving it the look of
another concrete jungle like Dhaka. On the main beach itself, there are dozens of shops selling souvenirs,
toys, clothes, food and even mosques, giving the beach the look of a slum.
Infrastructure activities, especially the construction of hotels and motels, are going on unabated. Some of
the hotels are even touching the beach. New hotels with attractive facilities are announcing their arrivals
regularly.
Coming to the tourism activities, there are no planned, well-coordinated activities to showcase
Bangladesh. The only thing for tourists to do is to sit idly in their hotel rooms. Recreational activities in
the beach are too meagre. There are no nightlife activities in Cox’s Bazar. No one knows how to get it
started. The government tourism policy planners are in a quandary, while the private tour operators are
scared to do anything there because of the rigid attitudes of the district administration.
Hundreds of empty food packets and plastic water bottles are regularly spotted across the beach area.
Garbage can also be noticed in several places. There is a beach management committee to keep It clean.
But the beach itself and its surroundings do not give the impressions that a committee is there to manage
it.
The Rohingya situation is contributing largely to the degradation of Cox’s Bazar. The denudation of
several thousand hectares of forestland to house the Rohingya in camps as well as the ongoing cutting
trees for firewood for cooking is the reason we, along with the entire world, are suffering from dire
consequences. Not only this, the crime rates in Cox’s Bazar and surrounding areas have gone up
substantially in the past couple of years. This is considered to be a major drawback in the tourism
business.
Moreover, constant political instability in our country enables Bangladesh to lose a huge amount of
foreign currency and the tourism industry have to suffer largely as well. The lack of marketing and
updated information in websites and social media platforms plays a significant role in the reluctance of
A study was conducted comprising 500 respondents which shows that when asked about the problems
they already faced, they identified different types of the same about Cox’s Bazar. The problems are given

RECOMMENDATIONS

initiatives are taken and followed throughout, we can regain and retain the lost beauty of this place.

services.
The government should make a tourist information center where the tourists can get information
updates about their expected spots, transference, located place and essential information.
Tourism industry of Bangladesh has a number of positive impacts on the overall economy of this country.
The introduction and development of tourism allows the local people of the Cox’s Bazar an opportunity
for economic and educational growth that would not be otherwise available. In addition, it may allow
both the tourists and the local community a chance to experience other cultures, which broadens
understanding.
