Topic 1: Wave Motion 05/02/20

A wave is a disturbance caused through a medium leading to a transfer of energy from one point to
another.
Categories of wave
Mechanical wave is a wave that require a medium to propagate (travel through). e.g. water waves, wave
produced on a slinky and sound wave etc.
Electromagnetic wave is a wave that don’t require a medium to propagate.
Electromagnetic spectrum
An electromagnetic spectrum is a band of electromagnetic wave that are arranges according to their
increasing wavelength or decreasing frequency. They are Radio waves, Microwaves, Infra-red rays (IR),
Visible rays, Ultra-violet rays (UV), X-rays and γ(gamma)-rays.
Common Properties of electromagnetic waves
a) They transfer energy from one place to another.
b) They are all transverse waves.
c) They can all travel through a vacuum.
d) They all travel at 3×108m/s (300,000,000 m/s) in a vacuum.
e) The equation (v=fλ) applies to all of them.
But they have different wavelengths, frequencies and applications.

Gamma radiation
Gamma rays have the highest frequency and lowest wavelength. Gamma radiation are dangerous but also
useful for the medical treatment such as radiotherapy.
X-ray
X-rays have a considerable penetrating power through matter and they also affect photographic films.
They are used to check the bone fracture of an organism e.g. X-ray photographs for bones and metallic

structure.
Ultraviolet rays
Ultraviolet radiation is used in u.v lamps to sterilize surgical equipment and the air in operating theatres.
Excess U.V radiation can cause damages such as heavy sunburn, eye damage and skin cancer.
visible light

This is a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible to the human eye. It is used for both
lighting.

Infra-red rays
It transfers heat energy but it is invisible. They are used to study human and animal body heat patterns,
but more often, they are used as night vision camera. Infra-red radiation is also used in T.V and DVD
remote controls

Microwaves
Microwaves are used in radar systems, mirowave oven and the communication with satellites. A
microwave oven heat food by passing microwave radiation through it. The radiation transfers heat
directly to the molecules(tiny particles) inside the food.
Radio waves
Raiowaves have the highest wavelength but the list frequency. They are used for the broadcasting of radio
or TV programs and cellphones.
Revision Questions
