WHAT FACTORS There are many factors influencing the choice of coatings for protection of a
INFLUENCE ON SELECTION structure or part of a structure. Selection of a coating system is in most cases

based on the owner’s own experience and on recommendations given by the
applicator and Jotun. This will be a mix of the legislative requirements, cost,
usage and coating properties.
How to select a paint system? Are all paint systems equally effective? The
answer is obviously no. Generally speaking, a high cost system is better than a
low cost system, as this depends upon the type of paint, number of coats and
total thickness of the actual system. The selection is based on many different
factors, as we will see from the following.

Authorities Paint consists of different chemical components mixed together, and as with
Demands on safety, health other chemicals, possible impact on the environment and on people is
and environment highlighted more and more. Different countries do not have the same
regulations in this respect, so one has consider this in each case. Key words are
safety and health for the applicator as well as for the personnel ultimately using
the structure. Spray application will lead to some loss of paint, which is easily
carried on the wind and might be a threat to the surroundings.

Clients The ultimate goal for a customer should be to select a coating system offering
Demands on price and the lowest lifetime cost. Therefore the customer’s prime interest concerns:
performance
• Cost-effective systems
• Easy inspection
• Easy repair/maintenance
For further information please refer to the list of Jotun Coating Systems, which
includes corrosivity category and expected durability for the most common
combinations of protective coatings.

Future accessibility to the Maintenance is often difficult when a site is in full production. This fact must be
project considered, as it will definitely have an impact on the life cycle cost (LCC). For
further information please refer to the table ‘Typical Coating Systems and
Expected Durability’.
Chapter 2: 2.7

Normally, maintenance is first required once the coating has reached the level
Ri 3 as defined in ISO 4628-3. Based upon this, the durability has been indicated
in a separate table.

Check list for coating As can be seen from the sections above, selection of a coating system is rather
selection complex and must be done on a case by case basis. It is therefore impossible to
specify one complete procedure applicable for all cases. However, a few general
points can be used as a checklist:
• Consider the corrosivity of the environment in the area where the structure is
or will be located (ISO 12944-2: C1, C2, C3, C4, C5-I, C5-M, Im1, Im2, Im3).
• Make sure that all legislation relevant to the application, use of coating and
use of construction unit is known before the coating is selected.
• Take all relevant precautions for protecting applicators and the surrounding
environment. Remember SHE (Safety, Health, Environment)
• Is the paint system well defined and in line with technical requirements given
in the data sheets?
• Are the maintenance frequency, methods and routines able to meet with the
selected system?
• Will cathodic protection be used to back up the paint system? If so, the
coating system must be compatible with the supplementary cathodic
protection system.

COATING MANUAL
TYPICAL COATING A: The following table includes a selection of systems, but note that other combinations are possible as well to achieve
SYSTEMS AND EXPECTED the expected durability. The coating system data sheets referred to in column 1 will include technical details.
DURABILITY (A) Corrosivity categories refer to ISO 12944-5 as explained in this chapter. For structures immersed in water
or buried in soil it is difficult to refer to any category of corrosion, hence we refer to ISO 12944-2, 5.2.
Expected durability is based upon surface preparation according to ISO 8501-1, Sa 21⁄2 and all other relevant
standards. The expected durability is divided into 3 columns and marked with a light grey shading. Please note
that the expected durability range is not a ‘guarantee time’ (refer ISO 12944-5, 5.5). We have included
systems for concrete walls, which is not part of ISO 12944.
B: As an extra service and guidance (not part of ISO 12944) we have added a darker grey on top of the durability
grading to give a rough indication how to differentiate the quality of the systems. This shall not be
understood as a further grading in years! The actual durability will, as pointed out in the Protective
Coating Manual, depend on all the factors influencing the performance.
Example 1: System S 001, S 002 and S 003: medium durability, 5–15 years as per the light grey shading. The dark
grey shading on top only tells that we regard S 001 and S 003 as equally good and better than S 002.
Example 2: System S 261 and S 262: both have medium durability, 5–15 years. The dark grey shading indicates
that S 262 is the better of the two as the number of coats and DFT are higher.
For Tank coating we refer to separate Tank Protection Manual.
For Shopprimer we refer to the separate Shopprimer Manual.
For Concrete, we refer to the separate Concrete Manual.
The following systems are common Jotun systems. Those matching ISO 12944 are marked with • before the system
number. Jotun can provide further systems according to ISO 12944 upon request.
