Divisional
charts/ DC
are the
backbone of
Jyotish. But
before
getting into
DC analysis,
make sure
that you
have your
exact birth
time to the
minute
available. If
you are
using a
software to
calculate do
check the
settings,
Lahiri-
Chitrapaksha
ayan-amsha,
location etc.
Or if you are
really
interested,
learn to
draw them
yourself, so
all your
concepts will
get clear.
We refer to
four groups
of varga
charts or DC.

Shad-varga
– the D1 D2
D3 D9 D12
D30 ie six
types of
charts in this
group. These
charts are
seen when
you have to
match charts
for marriage
or any
serious
question
where life
time
decisions
have to be
taken.

D1 – basic
birth chart,
the most
important
chart
D2 – Hora,
wealth, more
specifically
the ability to
accumulate
wealth
D3 –
Drekkana,
boldness,
enterprise,
options in
life, ability to
choose
between
those
options,
initiative,
teammates,
siblings
D9 –
Navamsha,

the
foundation
Dharma,
potential and
deepest you,
the second
most
important
chart which
we almost
always refer
to. The most
significant
relationship
which
completes
you is seen
from this

amsha,
misfortunes
in general

Sapta -varga
– In this
group we
have the six
charts of the
shad-varga
ie the D1 D2
D3 D9 D12
D30 and in
addition the
D7, so we
have seven
DC in this
group.

D7 –
progeny,
number, sex
of children,
their life and
fortune.
Ideally both
parents
horoscopes
should be
seen for
greater
clarity on
any question
related to
progeny. And
for a
Brahmachari
Sat-guru, this
chart will
indicate the
quality of his
disciples.
(The Soul is
beyond
Jyotish, but
as long as it
continues in
the 5-layered
body, this
body follows
the
principles of
Jyotish.)

For your
average
clients, you
will need to
refer to just
these 7 types
of DC. You
have to see
the D1, ie the
basic birth
chart and the
D-9
Navamsha
chart
compulsorily.
This will
help fine-
tune your
analysis and
your
predictions
will be more
accurate.
Then if your
client has
some specific
question you
may have to
refer to the
specific DC
mentioned
in the Sapta-
varga
category.
Most of your
clients will
be of this
type.

If its a
question
related to
marriage
you will see
the D1 and
D9 and if you
feel like
glance
through the
DC listed in
the Shad-
varga.
If it is to do
with
someone
starting a
small new
business,
you will
check out the
D1, D9 and
in addition
use the D3 to
fine tune
your
prediction. If
you wish to
check how
profitable it
is going to be
D2.
If it is a
children
related
question
then the D1,
D9 and the
D7.

Dasha varga
– Here we
have the
seven DC of
the sapta-
varga ie the
D1 D2 D3 D7
D9 D12 D30
and in
addition to
these, D10
D16 D60, so
we have ten
types of DC
here.

D10 –
profession,
leadership
qualities,
 D16 –
travelling,
for business,
pleasure,
accidents
D60 –
summary,
the final
result that all
the charts
together can
give
ultimately.

These three
extra DC are
more
relevant for
people who
are working
in high
positions, in
corporate,
government
or have their
own
business, but
all at very
high levels.
For your
general
average
citizen type
of clients,
you
generally do
not need to
open these
additional
charts. But in
specific cases
eg someone
asks about
his proposed
journey or
there is an
accident and
you need to
see details
then you
might need
to open the
D16.

Shodasha
varga – Here
we have the
ten charts
from the
Dasha varga
ie D1 D2 D3
D7 D9 D10
D12 D16 D30
D60 and in
addition to
these, the D4
D20 D24 D27
D40 D45. So
in total there
are 16 DC in
this group.

D4 –
Chaturtha-
amsha,
assets in life,
necessities,
resources,
shelter,
 properties,
vehicles etc
D20 –
Vimsha-
amsha is for
religion and
spiritual
matters
D24 –
Chaturvimsha-
amsha,
learning,
education,
wisdom,
knowledge
D27 –
Nakshatra-
amsha,
inherent
weakness
and strength
of your
personality
as a whole.
D40 –
Khaved-
amsha
general
auspiciousness
of events in
life
D45 –
Akashved-
amsha,
general
issues in life

These extra
charts are
almost never
seen for
general
people. In
earlier times,
these full 16
charts,
shodash-
varga were
seen for
Kings. So in
today’s
context they
should be
seen for the
top-most
politicians,
prime
minister,
president etc
types of
people on
whom the
entire nation
relies (even
if it is for
small 5yr
terms!). If
someone has
to become
the president
or prime
minister of a
nation, then
all these 16
divisional
charts have
to be
auspicious
and capable
of giving
solid real
results.

DC is a
microscopic
study of each
aspect of
your life. The
birth chart
by itself is
good for a
broad
outline of the
life events,
but the DC
are
necessary
for the
detailed
picture. Each
house of the
D1 stands for
so many
things, so to
narrow
down results
you need to
check the
further
relevant DC.

The Dasha/
transits
(https://psychologicallyastrology.com/2020/02/29/transits-
and-their-

you/)are
used to
predict the
timing of
events, again
the broad
picture is
from the D1
but the exact
timing will
come from
tallying the
dasha
/transit and
the relevant
DC. Eg you
might have
actual
chances of
getting a
child from
your D1 and
the potential
from the D9,
but the exact
time of its
birth can be
best
predicted
from the
transit/
dasha and
the D7.

Then it is
possible that
the
Dasha/transit
may be good
for one
aspect of
your life but
bad for
another part
of your life.
Again this
can be seen
from the
birth chart to
some extent
but the
relevant
divisional
chart will
give exact
reading.

residence
and also the
physical
mother.
Suppose the
current
dasha/
transit is bad
for the D1
th
chart’s 4
house. But
when you
check the D4
it is good.
And when
you check
the D12 this

even worse.
So you can

good, but the
mother will
face
problems
during this

pin-point the
results.

2/12 mutual
axis in that
specific
divisional
chart. Or
debilitated.
Then that
sub-period
will affect
that aspect of
your life
adversely.

Eg. Suppose
in the D3,
you have
Jupiter and
Mars in the
6/8 axis

Jupiter is
also
debilitated

Thank god

going to an
astrologer
for a
consultation
was a day-
long affair as
he would
have had to
calculate
everything
by hand.
Thus

planetary

But now we
have
accurate
birth times
and software
so we can
accurately
chart out
every aspect
of our lives.
Now let’s
check out
why
divisional
charts are so
important.

For
answering
specific
questions in
Vedic
astrology, we
have to
check out the
divisional
charts.
Making life
predictions
using just the
birth chart

give
incomplete
results. If
you cannot
access the
divisional
charts, or
have doubts
regarding
the exact

Ashtottarashata-
ansha is the
last vedic
varga chart
which
indicates the
possibility of
final moksha
and
experiencing
your own
divinity. Its
ascendant

their own
significance
but then the
astrologer
also has to
be well
qualified and
interested
enough to
analyse
them.
Deciphering
varga charts
may seem
very crazy, I
am a bit
worried if I
might have
scared you
off learning
astrology.
But they are
easy, you
have the
correct birth-
time, you
can predict
everything
about the
chart with
reasonable
confidence.

Always
remember
the D-1 birth
chart is the
manifested
physical
chart. All the
higher
divisional
charts
indicate the
potential.
You should
take cues
from the
higher
charts, these
are the
‘seeds’ which
will
ultimately
manifest. It
is in your
hands to
increase or
decrease
their
influence on
you. Like the
example of
the exalted
Venus, if the
person
knows that
he is going to
be great in
the spiritual
arena (D-20),
but not so
much in the
married life
(D-9), he can
take a
decision to
focus
completely
on his
Sadhana

astrology
post. So the
Divisional
chart 60, D-
60,
Shashtyamsha,
‘your secret
life’! This is
the chart you
get when
you divide
the 30
degree long
rashi/sign
into 60 parts,
each part
being 1/2 deg
or 30 secs in
length. There
are 2 parts in
this analysis.

1. Each
amsha/part
is also
assigned to a
rashi/sign, so
you can
draw a
whole new
chart using
these new
planet-rashi
placements.
This is the D-
60 chart.
2. Each of these
60 parts of a
rashi/sign
has a defined
character.
Each planet
is allotted to
this
amsha/part
in which its
degree falls,
and thus
takes on its
character.
There are
actually 60
classes of the
Shashtyamsha
parts. Here
you get to
know in
which
category
each of the 9
planet fall in
and thus
their deepest
natures.

Thus in this
way, the 360
degrees of
the Zodiac
thus has 720
parts/amsha.

enough

get away

first
divisional
chart which
we always

the birth
chart. The
physical
manifested
reality. We
keep on
discussing
this chart
endlessly.
2. Then next is
the birth
moon

chart, this
gives an
indication of
the
perception
and
emotional
filters of
your life.
Same as the
D-1 just
turned
around,
counting the
house that
has the
moon as the
first house
you get your
birth moon
chart.
3. The
Navamsha,
D-9, the 9th
divisional
chart, this is
the Real You,
as discussed
in this
earlier post

4. The D-60
which is
another very
important
chart, we
will now
know a bit
more about
this.
So why do
this? Divide
and
subdivide
the zodiac to
get more and
more
divisional
charts? Each
divisional
chart gives a
deeper
insight into
the real you,
the secret
you, the
physical you,
the astral
you, the
spiritual you,
the
emotional
you and so
on. You and
me are very
complex
beings, you
see!

But a note,
your birth
time should
be exact.
Only then
should you
check out the
divisional
charts, else
they will
mislead. An
error of 1
min will
change your
D-60.
Sometimes I
wonder what
should be
the ‘exact
birth time’?
Time when
the head
comes out,
or the entire
body, or the
first breath,
or the first
cry? It is the
exact time
when the
umbilical
cord is cut.
This
separates the
child from
the mother,
now he /she
is an
independent
individual.
Anyways,
there is a
way of
calculating
your exact
birth time
using
palmistry.
The vertical
lines on the
fingers are
used in
mathematical
formulae to
arrive at
your exact to
the second
birth time.
And there
are other
mathematical
ways to
rectify the
birth time in
case you
cannot get a
handprint.
So before
dabbling in
divisional
charts please
be sure of
your birth
time.

karmic
losses and
falls and
gains and
spectacular
rises in
power. The
final
conclusion of
the chart
analysis is D-
60. There are
two ways of
using the
Shashtyamsha.

1.The first
and more
familiar way
of analysing
the D-60
chart.

Sometimes
you observe
that the D-1
is superb but
still
predictions
fail. There
are exalted
planets but
still they fail,
oh so
tragically!
There are
charts which
gain
tremendous
power and
prestige but
then after a
few years
are found
begging in
the streets.
Big
politicians
and
businessmen
are revealed
to be
ultimately
corrupt. This
is domain of
the D-60. The
final tally of
the results
that a planet
will
give. Exalted
and
beautifully
placed
planets in D-
1 may be too
good to be
true so look
into their
placement in
the D-60 to
indicate
their actual
final
results. If the
well placed
planets of D-
1 become
debilitated
and are
destroyed in
the D-60, the
dasha/time
period ruled
by this
planet will
indicate a
disaster and
fall in power.

Retrograde

planets are
always a
source of
confusion in
the chart.
The energies
of these
planets are
directed
differently
thus the
results
expected can
be delayed
or even
denied. The
D-60 is the
final on the
results of
retrograde
planets. If
the planet is
in a good
placement in
in the D-60
rashi and
house it will
give its
results, may
delay will
not deny
them.
Similarly for
combust

planets, their
final results
are to be
determined
accurately
from the D-
60.

The planets
placed in the
first house of
the D-60
have the
final say on
the chart’s
destiny. If
benefic
planets, or
the
ascendant
lord planets
of D-1 or D-9
are located
here, it
would
indicate an
outstanding
personality.

However all
planets are
important in
the D-60 and
should be
analysed
properly. The
chart is
analysed
with the
same
principles of
exaltation,
debilitation,
aspects, etc
as the main
birth chart.

2. Now let us
take a look at
the
Shashatyamsha
categories.
This is the
real reason
why D-60 is
important.
The 60
categories. This
is very very
detailed and
the character
of each
planet is
micro-
analysed. As
per the
ancient
seers/Rishis
this analysis
is even more
important
that the
analysis of
the D-1. If
you open
any of the
Vedic
software like
Parashara
light you will
see some of
these names
against the
planets in a
table. The
inner nature
of these
planets can
be seen at a
glance.

Of these 60
categories,
20 categories
are fully
malefic and
a planet
falling in
theses
categories
will be
ultimately
act like
malefic.
Even if he is
exalted or a
functional
benefic or
anything
good in the
D-1, he still
has the
potential to
turn the
chart into a
riches to rags
story. (Their
20 names are
Rakshasa, Bhrashta, Kulaghna, Garala, Pureesha, Kaala, Ahibhaaga, Gulika, Mrityu,
Kalaa, Kantaka, Vishadagdha, Kulanaasha, Vamshakshaya, Utpaata, Kaalaroopa, Danshtraakaraala, Kaalaagni, Dandaayudha, Kroora)
10 categories
are semi
malefic
where
planets
placed give
mixed
results but
tending
more to
 malefic.

of these are
fully benefic,
a planet

Why 60
divisions?
The ancient
Seers of
Jyotish
consider this
chart to be
the defining
one. The
reason
comes from
the Surya-
siddhanta,

the Sanskrit
text on
which all
astronomy is
based. It is
extremely
accurate
even by
modern
standards.
eg. it
mentions
the avg
length of the
tropical year
to be
365.2421756
days and the
modern
value is
accepted at
365.2421904
days! So the
definition of
an
astrological
‘planet’,
graha, comes
from this
book. But
60? The
Nakshtra,
lunar
mansions

27-lunar-
mansions-
nakshatra/),
take an
apparent
60yrs to
complete
one apparent
revolution
around the
Sun (Bhaa-
chakra).
These 60 yrs
have
different
names too.
So 60 is
linked to one
cycle of the
Zodiac
around the
Sun.

This was a
very brief
starter post
on the D-60.
Our
seers/Rishis
were
supermen in
the real
sense. They
mapped out
the universe
in tiny tiny
bits and
assigned
names and
meanings to
each one of
these bits.
Today we
have lost
most of this
deep
knowledge.
