Shadbala :: is the strength of the planet which is arrived at in any of the Vargas
(Divisional Charts) including the Rashi and Bhava Chart.
Divisional charts considered are D2, D3, D7, D9, D12, D30.
Shadvargabala :: is the sum total of the strength of planets in all the vargas or charts.
One set of Jyotishi’s think that the planet which is having more strength does good
while another set thinks that it is only the quantum of effect that is shown depending
on the strength of the planet.
The strength which a planet possesses depends on its placement in a Bhava, Aspects
it receives from other planets, Direction, Time, Movement, etc.
To arrive at the strength of planets only 7 planets are considered, the strength of Rahu
and Ketu are not considered.
The shadbala of a planet for a given horoscope tells us whether that particular planet
is strong enough to bestow the karakatwas assigned to it by being a lord of that house
or bhava. A strong planet will give the good or bad results depending on its nature,
whereas a weak planet will give difficulties and diseases instead of good results.
Even though all classics on the subject of Jyotisha deals with calculation of Shadbala,
the effect of the planets are not mentioned in the classics. It is therefore a bit difficult
to summarize the effects of planets on the basis of Shadbala. Modern writers out of
the their experience have tried to analyze the effects of planets based on Shadbala

D7- Saptamamsha - Odd sign starts from the same sign. Even sign starts from the
(4d 17m 8.57s) 8th Sign.
(2d 39m)
ii) Saptavargiya Bala – Rashi (D1), Hora (D2), Drekkana (D3), Saptamamsha (D7),
Navamsha (D9), Dwadashamsha (D12), Trimshamsha (D30).
If a planet is in Moola Trikona (only in D1 Chart) it gets a strength of 45
shastiamshas.
In the other Divisional Charts mentioned above if the planet is in
Own house – 30, Very friendly – 22.5, Friendly – 15, Neutral – 7.5,
Enimical – 3.75, Extreme Enemy – 1.875.
We have to consider the PANCHANDA MAITRI FOR THE RESPECTIVE
HOROSCOPE. Total of these gives Saptavargiya bala.
iii) Oja-yugma Bala - This is applicable for both D1 and D9 Charts, Shukra
and Chandra are female planets and the other planets – Ravi, Kuja, Budha,
Guru and Shani. Male Planets placed in Odd Rashi in both the Charts get a
strength of 15 shastiamshas. Female planets placed in even rashi in both the
charts get 15 sahstiamshas.
iv) Kendradi bala - This is considered only for the Rashi Chart. Planets placed in
Kendra (1,4,7,10) get 60 shastiamshas. Planets placed in Panaphara (2,5,8,11)
get 30 shastiamshas. Planets placed in apoklimas (3,6,9,12)
get 15 shastiamshas.
v) Drekkana Bala - If male planets Ravi, Guru and Kuja are placed in the FIRST
Drekkana they get 15 shastiamshas. Neutral planets Shani and Budha if
placed in the SECOND Drekkana get 15 shastiamshas. Female Planets Chandra
and Shukra if placed in the THIRD Drekkana get 15 shastiamshas.
Now we will work out the calculations for the example chart.
