I. Motivation

Before we start our lesson, let’s have a

game. This game is what you called "SHOORACE IT
to WIN IT” I will group you into two then all you
have to do is to shoot the ball in every station. Each
station has a flag that you can get if you shoot the ball
in that station. Every time the ball shoots inside the net
it has corresponding letter. After you finish the 10
station you need to form a word based on the letters
that you’ve got. The group that will get the correct
answer first will be declared as the winner.

Are my instructions clear class?

Good job everyone! Did you have fun?

Yes, Ma’am.

That’s nice! From the activity that we had, what do

you think is our lesson for today?
Based on the activity that we had ma’am, I think our
lesson for today is all about basketball.

Correct! Any other answer?

Ma’am I think our lesson for today is all about the
basic basketball skills.

Absolutely! And that’s our lesson for today.

II. Lesson Proper

But before we start our discussion please read our

objectives for today.
Objectives
At the end of the lesson, 100% of the students shall be
able to attain at least 80% level of proficiency to:
1. Identify the nature and background of
Basketball
2. Recognize the significance of Basketball in
individual’s health
3. Execute the skills involved in Basketball

Thank you, everybody!

Now, what comes first to your mind when you hear

the word “basketball”?
The first thing that comes on my mind is it is one of
the popular team sports here in the Philippines.

Very good! Your answer is correct.

But before we start the definition of basketball. Let’s

have first a brief description of its history. Will you
please read the definition?
HISTORY
Basketball was invented:
 In 1891
 At Springfield College
 Dr. James Naismith

Class the history of basketball began with its invention

in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts by Canadian
physical education instructor James Naismith. The
game became very popular at the 20th century, first in
America and then in other parts of the world. Its main
purpose is to condition young athletes during cold
months. The first public basketball game was played
in Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 11, 1892.
Let’s move on into the definition of basketball. Kindly
read.
Basketball
- Is a team sport where a player aims to shoot a
ball through a basket to score while following on
the set rules.
- One of the most popular and widely viewed
sports.

Basketball is played by millions of people, both men

and women, in all parts of the world. Professional
basketball is watched by millions more on TV. The
game is played between two teams, with five players
per team allowed on the court at any one time. Points
are scored by getting the ball through a hoop called
'the goal' or 'the basket', and the team scoring the most
points wins.
Is it clear class?
Yes Ma’am!

Now, let’s proceed to the Basic Skills in Basketball

First is the SHOOTING will you please read:
SHOOTING
 Ability to properly hold and throw the ball into
the air toward the basket while avoiding
defenders.
TYPES OF SHOOTING
JUMPSHOT
LAY-UP
FREE THROW

Shooting is throwing the basketball toward the hoop; it

is the most important skill in basketball in which
basketball is propelled downward into the basket.

The three types of shooting are:

A jump shot is most frequently used for mid to long-

range shots, including shooting beyond the arc.

A free throw is a shot attempt given to a player that

was fouled and it is taken on the free throw line.

A layup is a shot made from short range by a player

moving towards the basket.

Any questions so far?

Ma’am, what do you think is the most effective type of
shooting to get a score?

Base on the definition I said a while ago, lay up is the

most effective among the three. Because unlike free
throw and jump shot, lay up is a shot made from short
range therefore it is possible to shoot the ball and get a
score. Now let’s proceed to the definition of dribbling.
Will you please read?

DRIBBLING
 Ball-handling skills and knowledge of how to
spread your fingers for ball control.
 This skill will allow you to move up and down
the court, maneuver past defenders and execute
plays.
Dribbling is maneuvering a ball by one player while
moving in a given direction, avoiding defenders'
attempts to intercept the ball. A successful dribble will
bring the ball past defenders legally and create
opportunities to score.
Any questions class?
None Ma’am

Kindly please read the definition of passing.

PASSING
 Ability to pass the ball to your teammate.
 Basketball is a team sport that involves finding a
teammate who is open for a shot.
Passing is the movement of the ball from one player to
another.

There are 5 common types of basketball passes:

1. Bounce pass
2. Chest pass
3. Overhead pass
4. One-hand push pass
5. Baseball pass

Please read the next basketball skill?

REBOUNDING - ability to jump with power to gain

possession to the ball when the ball bounces to the rim
after a failed shot before it touches the floor
Class rebounding is the act of catching the ball after a
player has thrown it at basket and has not scored a
point. Now let’s proceed to the last skill of basketball.
Please read.

RUNNING - The ability to go back and forth as the

game quickly transitions between offense and defense.

Class usually running use during fast break and also

when the players do the fast lay-up. Do you
understand?
Yes Ma’am

So class will someone tell me again what are the 5

basic skills in basketball?

Ma’am the 5 basic skills in basketball are the

SHOOTING, DRIBBLING, PASSING,
REBOUNDING and RUNNING.
Correct! Do you understand Class?

Yes Ma’am!

Any question so far about the Basic skills in

Basketball?
None Ma’am!

Now, let’s proceed to the Officials in Basketball

Game. Will you please read?
REFEREE - Responsible for enforcing rules and
regulations and calling fouls and violations.

LEAD REFEREE - Responsible for making decisions

in crucial situations during the game the final verdict
is in his/her hand.

Referee is a person who makes sure that players act

according to the rules of basketball.

So class as you can see in game of basketball there are

2 or 3 referees that monitoring the game if one of the
players got the violation the referee will call but in
some crucial situation like some verbal violation by
the coach or player. It’s the lead referee whose verdict
is considered final. In "two-person" mechanics, each
official works either the lead or the trail position. The
lead position is normally along the baseline of the
court, with the trail position having its starting point at
the free throw line extended on the left side of the
court facing the basket.
Do you understand class? Okay, let’s proceed to the
scorers, please read.

Yes Ma’am

SCORERS
- keep a running summary of points scored, notify
field goals and free throws made and missed.
- also record the fouls called on each player
- notes the timeouts and let the referee knows if all
timeouts have been used up by a team.
As we all know scorers is the one who record not just
the scores of each team but also the fouls and violation
that both team have.

And the last official in basketball is the Timers will

someone please read

TIMER

- Assists referee in recording time.

- Generally, two timers are appointed by the
league: who operates 24 second clock and the
official timer alerts referee to start and stops
the clock.
Timer will regulate the playing time and track the
duration of the game and responsible for monitoring
game time. But their key function is tracking
basketball clock rules.

Do you follow class?

Yes Ma’am
Any questions or clarifications?
None Ma’am

Now, let’s proceed to the Violations in Basketball

Game. Please read

TRAVELING

- moving illegally with the ball

Class this is the most common violation that we

always hear when we watch basketball because most
of the players step their foot 3 times without dribbling
the ball. What is the next violation in basketball?
Please read.
THREE SECONDS

- an offensive player remains in the key (free

throw lane- the area under the basket) for more
than 3 seconds

Always remember class when we play basketball we

can’t stay inside that free throw lane for more than 3
seconds so we need to be alert and move when we are
standing in that space so that referee won’t call for that
violation.

Question so far?

None Ma’am
Okay let’s proceed to double dribble. Please read.

DOUBLE DRIBBLE

- a player dribbles the ball with both hands at the

same time or they stop and then start dribbling
again

Double dribbles occurs when a player ends his or her

dribble by causing the ball to come to rest in one or
both hands and dribbles it again with one hand or
when a player touches it twice before the ball hits the
ground. Third is free throw violation. Kindly read the
definition.

FREE THROW VIOLATION

- Stepping over the free throw line before the

ball hits the rim.

Free throw violation occurs when any player crosses a

boundary into the foul lanes or the painted area of the
key before the shot has left the shooter’s hands. Please
read the last violation in basketball.
BACK COURT VIOLATION

- Going back over the centerline/half court to

gain control of the ball after the ball has
already been in the opponents’ court.
Back court violation is called when the offense fails to
bring the ball from the backcourt to the frontcourt
within eight seconds after gaining possession.

Class these are just the basic violation inside the court
but there’s more violation that you can learn. Are we
clear class?
Yes Ma’am

Okay class for you to further understand our lesson I

have here a video about Basketball.

(students will watch the video)

Any questions class? Clarification?

None Ma’am.

music and when the music stops the person who have
the ball need to pick a question inside the ball and
