A Sense of Yellow
Carrie Carter

It’s the warmth of sunshine

As it tingles on my skin.
It’s the icy lemonade
That I eagerly drink in
It’s the scent of buttercups
Carried gently on the breeze.
It’s the sweetest honeycomb
And the quiet buzz of bees

It’s a sour lemon drop

That melts upon my lips
It’s the taste of summer rain.
And I gulp down greedy sips

It’s salty air that’s blowing

Over castles on the beach.
It is the tiny sailboats –
Far away and out of reach

Yellow’s more than a feeling.

It’s something real and true.
It is the warmth of friendship
That I feel when I’m with you.
Performance Task
The teacher will give the students the copy of a poem “Nature’s Way” by
Heidi Campbell. Using the graphic organizer that will be provided by the teacher,
the students will put the word or sentences in the graphic organizer that contain
sensory images. The students will also illustrate what they visualize in the poem
“To You” by Karla Kuskin.
“Nature’s Way”
Heidi Campbell

Upon a nice mid-spring day,

Let's take a look at Nature's way.
Breathe the scent of nice fresh air,
Feel the breeze within your hair.

The grass will poke between your toes,

Smell the flowers with your nose.
Clouds form shapes within the skies,
And light will glisten from your eyes.

Hear the buzzing of the bees,

Climb the tallest willow trees.
Look across the meadow way,
And you shall see a young deer play.
Pick the daisies as they grow,
Watch a gentle cold stream flow.
Know the sounds of water splash,
Catch its glimmer in a flash.

When altogether all seems sound,

Lay yourself upon the ground.
Take a moment to inhale,
And listen to Nature tell her tale...

Sensory Images

I see… I smell…. I hear… I taste… I touch…

“To You”

Karla Kuskin.

I think I could walk

through the shimmering sand
if I held your hand.
I think I could swim
the skin shivering the sea
if you would accompany me.
And run on ragged, windy heights,
climb rugged rocks
and walk on air
I think I could do anything at all,
if you were there
E. Valuing/Generalization
The teacher will ask the following questions:

1. What is the importance of sensory images in reading?

2. How can you apply it to your daily experiences?
