Lesson Plan:

Title: al-Khwarismi's Contributions to Algebra

Grade Level: 7

Standard Addressed: MGSE7.EE.1 Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor,
and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients.

Amount of Time: One Class Period (30-45 minutes)

Technology Standard Addressed: Knowledge Constructor

SAMR Level: Modification

Essential Question(s): How would the world be different if Fibonacci, Pythagoras, al-Khwarizmi, and
Euclid never existed?

Learning Activity:

Introduction: Students create a flipbook about al-Khwarizmi, the “Father of Algebra, by using Microsoft
PowerPoint. This project is for 7th grade algebra. According to the standard, students are expected to
use the properties/order of operations (often referred to as PEMDAS) to simplify and/or solve algebraic
equations. The purpose of this project is to help students understand where these algebraic concepts
came from, why they exist, and how they can be applied to the real world.

Instruction/Activities: Students create a flip book using presentation software (PowerPoint). Students
should get into groups of three or four and create at least two PowerPoint Slides each. This will create a
flip book when printed. After their flipbooks have been printed, they will present them to the class.

Final Product: Flip book and presentation

Evaluation: . They will be evaluated on participation, using credible sources, organization, and creativity.

Reflective Practice:
Are there any additional activities or tools that would extend or enhance the lesson idea above?

• Resources ideas could be provided for students to guide their research: videos, websites,
activities, etc.
• Have a modern day mathematician come in and talk to the class about how they use and apply
al-Khwarizmi’s ideas in real life.

What authentic, relevant, and meaningful activities will your students complete?

• They will complete a flip book of mathematicians that have made major contributions to math
today, especially in regards to what students will be learning in their seventh grade math class.
How will they build knowledge and skills?

• Students will be able to build on and apply their research skills to discover the history of algebra
for themselves. They will build on their knowledge of this history to make connections and to
get a better understanding of Algebra and its applications/usefulness.

How will students use digital tools and resources?

• Students will use the internet for their research on the history of al-Khwarizmi and his
contributions to Algebra and they will have to apply their research skills to find credible sources.
They will use Microsoft PowerPoint to organize and present the information they found through
their research. They must include pictures and text.

Could something be added to the activity to extend it to a higher Bloom’s level or technology level?

• Have the students record themselves reading their slides and create an mp4.
• Have students add animations to their slides.

Is the project such that it can be published to share with people outside the classroom? If so, what
additions would you make to the lesson idea to make this happen?

• Yes. It can saved to PowerPoint and posted on the classroom website to be shared with the
whole class and others.
