HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Health Effects

Acute - Swallowed

Harmful: may cause lung damage if swallowed. Ingestion may cause nausea and
vomiting. If vomiting occurs product may be aspirated into the lungs leading to chemical
pneumonitis.

Acute - Eye

Product may cause slight to moderate irritation to the eyes.

Acute - Skin
MSDS sheet for DIESOLINE 50 Page 5
Skin contact may cause moderate irritation to the skin. Release during high pressure
usage may result in injection of oil into the skin causing local necrosis.

Acute - Inhaled

Inhalation of vapours or mists generated at elevated temperatures may irritate the

respiratory system. Inhalation of high vapour concentrations may result in central nervous
system depression. Inhalation of high levels of mist may result in chemical pneumonitis.

Chronic

Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause defatting leading to dermatitis. It is

important to recognise that this product is classified as a Category 3 Carcinogen according
to National Occupational Health And Safety Commission (NOHSC). That is, there is some
evidence from appropriate animal studies that human exposure can result in the
development of cancer, but this evidence is insufficient to place the substance in Category
2.

First Aid

Swallowed

Do NOT induce vomiting. Contact a Poisons Information Centre (Phone 131 126) or a
doctor at once. Where vomiting occurs naturally have victim place head below hip level in
order to reduce risk of aspiration.

Eye

If in eyes wash out immediately with water. If symptoms persist seek medical attention.

Skin

Wash affected area thoroughly with soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing and
wash before reuse or discard. If symptoms develop seek medical attention. If high
pressure injection injury occurs seek medical attention immediately.

Inhaled

Remove the source of contamination or move the victim to fresh air. Ensure airways are
clear and have qualified person give oxygen through a face mask if breathing is difficult. If
symptoms develop seek medical attention.

First Aid Facilities

Eye wash fountains and safety showers should be available for emergency use.

Advice to Doctor

Advice to Doctor

Treat symptomatically. Care must be taken when performing gastric lavage due to the
aspiration hazard associated with this material. Consult a Poisons Information Centre
(Phone 131 126) for further advice.

PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

Exposure Limits

The following National Occupational Health And Safety Commission (NOHSC) exposure
limit applies:
Substance TWA STEL
ppm mg/m³ ppm mg/m³
Oil mist, refined - 5 - -
mineral

Eng. Controls

Special ventilation is not normally required due to the low volatility of the product at
normal temperatures. However, in the operation of certain equipment or at elevated
temperatures, mists or vapour may be generated and exhaust ventilation should be
provided to maintain airborne concentration levels below the exposure standard or where
no exposure standard is allocated, as low as is reasonably practicable.

Personal Protection

Respirator Type (AS 1716)

If engineering controls are not effective in controlling airborne exposure then an approved
respirator with a replaceable organic vapour filter should be used. Final choice of
appropriate breathing protection is dependant upon actual airborne concentrations and
the type of breathing protection required will vary according to individual circumstances.
Expert advice may be required to make this decision. Reference should be made to
Australian Standards AS/NZS 1715, Selection, Use and maintenance of Respiratory
Protective Devices; and AS/NZS 1716, Respiratory Protective Devices.

Eye Protection

If possibility of eye contact exists then safety glasses with side shields or goggles should
be worn as described in Australian Standard AS/ANZ 1337 - Eye Protectors for Industrial
Applications.

Glove Type

Impervious PVC or rubber gloves should be worn.

Clothing

Suitable protective clothing should be worn e.g. cotton overalls buttoned at neck and
wrist. When large quantities are handled the use of plastic aprons, sleeves and rubber
boots is recommended.

Work/Hygienic Practices

If contamination occurs, change clothing and discard internally contaminated gloves and
footwear. Launder contaminated clothing before reuse. Ensure a high level of personal
hygiene is maintained when using this product. Always wash hands before eating,
drinking, smoking or using the toilet.

Flammability

Fire Hazards

Combustible liquid, will not burn unless preheated. Isolate from sources of heat, naked
flames or sparks Refer to AS 1940 - Storage and handling of flammable and combustible
liquids and AS 2865 - Safe working in a confined space, for more specific information on
these subjects.

SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION

Storage and Transport

Storage Precautions

Classified as a class C1 combustible liquid for storage and handling purposes. Store in a
well ventilated place away from ignition sources, oxidising agents, foodstuffs and clothing.
Keep containers closed when not in use.
MSDS sheet for DIESOLINE 50 Page 8

Transport

Not classified as a Dangerous Good according to the Australian Code for the Transport of
Dangerous Goods by Road and Rail.

Spills and Disposal

Spills & Leaks

Remove all sources of ignition. Stop leak if safe to do so. Increase ventilation. Wear
appropriate breathing apparatus and full protective clothing to minimise skin and eye
exposure. Do not dilute material but contain. For large spills contain the spill with sand or
earth and take up with a vacuum truck. For smaller spills place inert, non-combustible
absorbent such as vermiculite, sand or dirt onto material. Collect the material using clean
non-sparking tools and place into a suitable labelled container for subsequent disposal. If
large quantities of this material enter the waterways contact the Environmental Protection
Authority, or your local Waste Management Authority.

Disposal

Follow state or local authority regulations and guidelines for disposal of the waste. Clean
area with detergent and water. Do not allow product to enter drains, sewers or water
courses - inform the local authorities if this occurs. Labels should not be removed from
containers until they have been cleaned. Do not cut, puncture or weld on or near
containers. Empty containers may contain hazardous residues. Contaminated containers
must not be treated as household waste. Containers should be cleaned by appropriate
methods and then re-used or disposed of by landfill or incineration as appropriate. Do not
incinerate closed containers.

Fire/Explosion Hazard

Fire/Explos. Hazard

Combustible. Keep storage tanks, pipelines, fire exposed surfaces etc cool with water
spray. Shut off any leak if safe to do so and remove sources of re-ignition. May form
explosive mixtures with air. Take steps to prevent electrostatic discharge. Containers may
explode if exposed to heat. Vapours are heavier than air and may 'travel' to low-level
MSDS sheet for DIESOLINE 50 Page 9
areas e.g. sumps, drains, etc. and flashback.

Hazardous Combustion Products

Under fire conditions this product may emit toxic and/or irritating fumes including carbon
monoxide and carbon dioxide.

Fire Fighting Procedures

Fire-fighters should wear full protective clothing and self contained breathing apparatus
(SCBA) operated in positive pressure mode. Use water spray to cool fire exposed
containers.

Extinguishing Media

Use foam, CO2 or powder to extinguish fire.

Hazardous Reaction

Stable. Avoid oxidising agents and naked flames.

Hazchem Code

None Allocated

Unsuitable Extinguishing Media

Direct water stream.
