Countries in Antarctica
0
There are no countries in Antarctica, although
seven nations claim different parts of it: New
Zealand, Australia, France, Norway, the United
Kingdom, Chile, and Argentina. The Antarctic also
includes island territories within the
Antarctic Convergence.
Look at the map of Antarctica, there are no countries on
this continent! Although scientific expeditions visit Antarctica,
there are no permanent human residents. There are about
4,000 seasonal visitors to Antarctica.
The Antarctic Treaty was signed in Washington on 1
December 1959 by the twelve nations that had been
active during the IGY (Argentina, Australia, Belgium,
Chile, France, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, South
Africa, United Kingdom, United States and USSR).
The International Geophysical Year (IGY; French: Année
géophysique internationale) was an international scientific
project that lasted from July 1, 1957, to December 31, 1958. It
marked the end of a long period during the Cold War when
scientific interchange between East and West had been
seriously interrupted.
United Socialist Soviet RepublicsU.S.S.R stands for United
Socialist Soviet Republics. There were fifteen republics in total.
What is USSR called now?
HASSAN RAZA BALA

The other parts of the former Soviet Union, which was another
name for the USSR, are called by their new names: Armenia,
Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Krgyzstan,
Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and
Uzbekistan.

When did the USSR change to Russia?

it existed from 1922 until 1991. It was the first country to declare itself
socialist and build towards a communist society. It was a union of 14
Soviet Socialist Republics and one Soviet Federative Socialist
Republic (Russia). The Soviet Union was created about five years
after the Russian Revolution.
The USSR consisted of the following present-day countries: Russia,
Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan,
Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan
Who has crossed Antarctica?
Polar explorer Louis Rudd completed his solo, unaided crossing
of Antarctica two days after Colin O'Brady became the first
person to accomplish the feat.
Antarctica has 20 air ports. Antarctica is the only place on the
planet where the land isn't officially owned by anyone. A few
countries have made land claims (for more about this, see the
information box on the next page), but those claims aren't
officially recognized and don't cover the entire continent.

Europe is a unique continent, which is not surrounded by water

from all directions and has an overland border with neighboring
Asia. Physiographically, it occupies the northwestern part of the
large landmass known as Eurasia and surrounded from the north
by the Arctic Ocean, from the west by the Atlantic Ocean, from
the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and from the southeast by
the Black Sea.
Now Europe includes 51 independent states. Russia, Kazakhstan,
Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey are transcontinental countries,
partially located in both Europe and Asia. Armenia and Cyprus
politically are considered European countries, though
geographically they are located in the West Asia territory.
Europe's largest country is Russia (37% of total continent area),
and the smallest one is Vatican City, which occupies only a tiny
territory in the center of Rome.
The most visited travel destination in this part of the world is
France with its capital Paris as the best place of interest, followed
