GENERAL OBJECTIVE:
At the end of the seminar student will able to gain in depth knowledge about “DISTANCE
EDUCATION”.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE:
At the end of the seminar student will able to:
Define the term distance education.
Enlist the aims & objectives of Distance education.
Enlist the elements of nursing education.
Describe the function of Distance education.
Enlist the Advantages & disadvantages of Distance education.
Differentiated between Distance education & Correspondence education.
Explain significance of Distance education in nursing.
INTRODUCTION
Distance Learning has been around for ages. Form the moment you decide you would
like to continue your education, the internet can provide access to detailed information about the
many institution and distance learning courses currently available to you world wide –
information about the teacher, deadlines, grants & fees. A courses website might include a
syllabus, a summary of lesson, notes, and links to helpful sites related research, project done by
students, model assignments and a long list of etceteras considered im-practical under the more
traditional system.
Distance education is a form of education in which the students of universities and
institutes of higher learning do not attend regular classes or lectures. But instead of that they will
receive the teaching material that was prepared by the professors & experts by means of letter,
printed material, Telephone calls, Video-Audio.
DEFINITION:
Distance education is a system of rational action for the imparting of knowledge skills &
attitudes were by the direct social relationship between teacher & students are substituted to a
great extent by indirect relations.
1. It aims at not only providing certificates & degrees but also helps in personal growth and
training for better job prospectus, job enhancement and in-service education.
2. Bring changes in attitude in addition to knowledge.
3. Makes education socially more relevant.
4. Provides flexibility of time to enable students to pace their studies.
5. Caters to educationally disadvantaged group likes unemployed people livening in remote
and rural areas, working people who cannot attend regular institution, House wives etc.
6. Provides opportunities for self-enrichment and professional upgrading.

frame work of open universities.

ADVANTAGES:-

3. Classes are student centered. We receive direction from an instructor and need to meet
project deadlines but for the most part we set the pace.
4. Offers easy access to resources. The instructor, other students and on-line tools are only a
click away.
5. Can lead to an advanced degree that may result in increased career salaries.
6. Avoid physical accessibility issues such as access to buildings and sitting in
uncomfortable chairs.
7. It a grater equalizer. We work with fellow classmates without regards for appearance,
age, sex, ethnicity of other differences that can result in prejudice.
8. Fosters a broader perspective through interaction with people from other parts of the
world.
9. Will teach we project and management, along with distance collaboration skills, which
will prepare us to work on virtual teams in our jobs.
DISADVANTAGES:-
1. We must be discipline enough to our work independently.
2. Require substantial self motivation. We set the pace and are in control of our chances for
success.
3. Requires strong reading, writing, and communication skill. Interaction with our instructor
and classmate will be via E-mail or massaging system where clarity & conciseness count.
4. We need basic computer skill and comfort with the internet.
5. Joins students and instructor who often have dissimilar background and experience.
While this can result in a grater understanding of other, it also can take longer to establish
a rapport.
